Virginia health officials have confirmed the state’s first known case of locally acquired dengue, a viral disease usually associated with international travel.

The Virginia Department of Health said the person, who lives in Northern Virginia, became sick but had not recently traveled outside the state.

Instead, the patient had been near another Virginia resident who was infected with dengue overseas. Health officials believe a local mosquito likely bit the traveler and later spread the virus to the second resident.

Well since it doesn't spread from person to person, this indicates someone is lying.

I misread the title as: "legally acquired dengue."

Did you miss the likely mosquito vector? ( if this was midwinter, I'd question it as well. But this is entirely plausible)

Northern VA has plenty of mosquitos, we lived there for decades. There is the Potomac River, countless streams, and plenty of lakes. Add in people watering their yards and gardens and yep, this would be an issue.

It will be interesting, and perhaps telling as to the official level of concern, to see if they decide to spray aerially for mosquitos.

There are only specific species of mosquitoes that can spread it.
I thought there was one in the South that could but not the ones up here.

The Asian Tiger Mosquito is very common in Virginia and is known as a dengue vector...

And at one time, Virginia was considered the South. South of the Mason-Dixon, still.

Northern Virginia should be called “The Peoples Republic of Northern Virginia”.
It does not resemble the South anymore and barely represents America. It’s democrat land plain and simple….
