We went the other route...bought brand new (albeit usually a "last year's model", at a huge discount), maintained them meticulously...and drove the wheels off them for 10-15 years! Our reasoning was simple: we lived rural, were hauling babies and kids around, and we did *not* have room in the budget for "unexpected" repairs. Hubby also felt strongly about me never getting stranded on the road, especially when hauling cattle to a sale! (This was also before cellphones)

But we also always opted for basic vehicles, which weren't often found on the "barely used" market. Heck, our first car after we were married didn't even have a radio! Hubby's sister borrowed it one day, and just about lost it when she didn't have "tunes" to distract her while driving!

Our last new vehicle was a 2001 GMC pickup...4wd, regular cab, full 8 foot bed. We bought it in the fall of 2002...it had been sitting on the lot for almost a year. Paid exactly $20k, out the door.

We sold it in 2020, for parts...still ran great, nothing wrong with the engine or transmission ..just rusted to death.

And there is logic in that. When we got married in 1995, my wife had a '93 Chevy Cavalier. She had paid $10K for it brand new. She bought newer cars as time went on, I was working 45 miles away so took over the Cavalier for mileage. I kept the oil changed with full synthetic and good maintenance. When I retired the car in 2010, it had 306K miles and still ran great, we gave it to a friend. My wife has bought brand-new cars, she bought a 2021 Civic brand new that now has about 25K miles. She literally only drives it to church... :D (She has worked fully from home since 2018).

Although I drifted the thread, my point is that many of those in need of SNAP and other assistance are largely responsible for their own situations. They don't need brand-new cars. They don't need $200/pair sneakers for their kids. They don't need
the latest Iphones. There's a lot of mixing up "wanting" and "needing", and I resent paying for "wants" for many who don't even work when I deny myself some wants after working almost 50 years.

I don't know how this thread devolved into cars.

But, I have a neighbor friend, who bought a used car in 1967 for $2,000. Brand new it was just over $4,000, and at that time he couldn't afford it.

He was kind of lucky he decided on a 1963 Corvette, now having a current value of more than $110,000. He only drives it on overcast days with almost no chance of rain, to protect the original paint.

A White mother of 3 who honked her horn at a Black man is now RECOVERING FROM BRAIN SURGERY after the man BEAT HER IN THE HEAD with a wooden bat.

She told police the suspect was a light-skinned Black male, but authorities REFUSED TO TELL THE PUBLIC his race.

Her name is Christen Phillips, she's 34 years old and a mom of three.

Here in North Carolina, she was doing DoorDash and Uber Eats at night, working a side hustle to help support her kids.

She was stopped behind a black Range Rover at a green light. It wouldn't move. So she tapped her horn.

That was it. That was her whole "offense."

Police say that Range Rover then FOLLOWED her alll the way to her next delivery.

When she walked back to her car, the driver came at her with a wooden bat and beat her in the head until she dropped.

Multiple skull fractures.
A shattered cheekbone.
Brain surgery.

In her own words: "I believe he thought I was de*d and left me for de*d. It's a miracle I woke up."

When she came to, he was gone. And so was her phone.

Bleeding, with a broken skull, she got herself into her car and DROVE HERSELF to the hospital.

A working mom, out earning money for her family in the middle of the night, nearly beaten to death over a honk.

She told her Facebook followers and police that the man who attacked her was a "light-skinned Black male" but police refused to release that information.

Instead, they just told the public they were looking for a Black Range Rover with ZERO MENTION of the race of the suspect.

He still hasn't been caught and police still aren't mentioning his race.

This is INSANITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not justifying what happened to her, but how did she not know she was being followed, and if she did, why would she get out of the car? Situational awareness is imporant.

It literally may never have occurred to her. She'll never have that luxury again. For the rest of her life, the "best" condition she'll be in, is yellow. And that would be in her secured, locked home with her armed *and proven reliable* husband next to her. :shk:
