Things are moving fast in Venezuela.
Donald Trump sent an envoy to Caracas today — John McNamara — to meet with Delcy Rodríguez. Diplomatic relations are expected to be restored in the coming days.
Trump confirmed he has suspended the second wave of attacks after Venezuela began releasing political prisoners, even if the process has moved more slowly than anticipated. The fact that a second wave was explicitly on the table helps explain the sudden urgency in Caracas and the interim regime’s willingness to comply. Trump also made clear that the U.S. fleet will remain stationed in the Caribbean.
Today, Trump is set to meet with seventeen oil companies to discuss future investments in Venezuela, with two envoys from the Venezuelan interim regime expected to attend.
In a notable shift, and a clear win for the opposition, Trump said he may receive Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado next week, after having said just days ago that she lacked the authority to lead a transition.
At the same time, Delcy Rodríguez is seeking an audience with Trump at the White House. The request is being conveyed through Richard Grenell, president of the Trump Kennedy Center, who is close to her brother Jorge, the head of the Venezuelan parliament.
