ISTANBUL (AP) — Two masked assailants attacked a Roman Catholic church in Istanbul during Sunday services, killing one person, Turkish officials said.

According to a statement posted on X by Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, the armed assailants attacked the Santa Maria Church in the Sariyer district at 11:40 a.m. local time. He did not specify what kind of weapons were used or whether anyone else was wounded.

Yerlikaya condemned the attack and said authorities are working on capturing the assailants. An investigation has been opened.

Speaking to reporters, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu offered his condolences and support for religious minorities in the city, which like Turkey as a whole is primarily Muslim.

This is confusing.

An Italian Catholic church--but in Istanbul?

Wouldn't that be a Turkish Catholic church?

Or was it a church only for Italians living in Turkey?

Or are the (Muslim) Turkish reporters highlighting "Italian" because Rome Italy is the seat of the Catholic faith?

It was reported that way because many Christians in Turkey are Orthodox. Both the Roman Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church consider themselves to be Catholic. This tells the reader (especially in Turkey) that the Church was a Roman Church and not an Eastern Orthodox one.

NEW: Turkey says the Istanbul church attackers are likely members of the Islamic State group.

They aren’t Turkish citizens. One suspect is from Tajikistan the other is from Russia
