Story trying to find a story

about 30 years ago I read a story about a young guy that had a hot gas burning car when almost every other cars were electric. It was an interesting thought at the time but I would like to read it again in light of the present day motive power. Anyone have any idea what its name may have been?

Did most people in his area think he was a little "slow", and he did have some issues but he was brilliant in others?

I can not remember, it was so long ago. It may have been a short story even?
