Trump threatens Iran with "dire consequences" if Houthi attacks continue

President Trump said on Monday that the U.S. will consider any further attacks by the Houthis in Yemen as emanating from Iran and threatened the Iranian government with "dire consequences."

Why it matters: Trump ordered strikes across Yemen on Saturday, which killed more than 50 people, according to Houthi affiliated media. White House national security adviser Mike Waltz claimed on Sunday the strikes "hit multiple Houthi leaders and took them out."

State of play: The U.S. conducted numerous additional strikes on Sunday and on Monday against Houthi targets across Yemen. Sources briefed on the strikes said they hit the houses of Houthi leaders and commanders, a missile production sites and weapons depots.
  • The Houthis said on Sunday they conducted two drone and missile attack on the USS Truman strike group in the Red Sea, which plays a central role in the U.S. military campaign.
  • The Pentagon confirmed the attacks but said they were defeated and caused no damages.
What they're saying: "Every shot fired by the Houthis will be looked upon, from this point forward, as being a shot fired from the weapons and leadership of IRAN, and IRAN will be held responsible, and suffer the consequences, and those consequences will be dire!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.
  • The president rejected Iran's claim that it doesn't control the Houthis. "Let nobody be fooled! The hundreds of attacks being made by Houthi... all emanate from, and are created by, IRAN," he said.
  • Trump threatened any further retaliation by the Houthis will be "met with great force" and suggested the U.S. response could also target Iran.
  • "They're dictating every move, giving them the weapons, supplying them with money and highly sophisticated Military equipment, and even, so-called, Intelligence," he added.
What to watch: National security adviser Mike Waltz said Sunday that the U.S. could hit Iranian targets in Yemen as part of its military campaign against the Houthis.
  • Waltz said the strikes in Yemen on Saturday were also a message to Iran.
  • "We will hold not only Houthis accountable but also their Iranian backers," he said on ABC's "This Week."
  • He said the targets that "will be on the table" include Iranian ships near the Yemeni coast that help the Houthis in gathering intelligence, Iranian military trainers, and "other things they have put in to help the Houthis attack the global economy."
The big picture: Trump sent a letter to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei last week proposing negotiations on a new nuclear deal.
  • U.S. officials have said Trump wants any such deal to include limitations on Iran's support for regional terror groups and militias, like the Houthis.
  • Khamenei called Trump's outreach "deception" and stressed Iran is not going to agree to any limitations on its relations with other groups in the region. Iran also condemned the U.S. strikes in Yemen.
Trump has also said if Iran won't agree to a deal, the U.S. will pursue "other options" if needed to ensure Tehran isn't able to develop a nuclear bomb.
  • Waltz said on Sunday that Iran needs to "hand over and give up" all elements of its nuclear program including missiles, weaponization and enrichment of uranium "or they can face a whole series of other consequences," adding that "Iran has been offered a way out of this."
  • Trump abandoned the 2015 nuclear deal that imposed limitations and inspections on Iran's nuclear program during his first term.

Iran Warns the U.S.: Any Aggression Will Be Met with a Decisive Response

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei has issued a strong warning following recent U.S. threats, emphasizing that Iran will not tolerate any violations of its sovereignty.

“We will respond firmly and with all our might to any aggression against the territorial integrity, security, and national interests of Iran. There is no doubt about that.”

Deus vult...

Let nobody be fooled! The hundreds of attacks being made by Houthi, the sinister mobsters and thugs based in Yemen, who are hated by the Yemeni people, all emanate from, and are created by, IRAN. Any further attack or retaliation by the “Houthis” will be met with great force, and there is no guarantee that that force will stop there. Iran has played “the innocent victim” of rogue terrorists from which they’ve lost control, but they haven’t lost control. They’re dictating every move, giving them the weapons, supplying them with money and highly sophisticated Military equipment, and even, so-called, “Intelligence.” Every shot fired by the Houthis will be looked upon, from this point forward, as being a shot fired from the weapons and leadership of IRAN, and IRAN will be held responsible, and suffer the consequences, and those consequences will be dire!

Which translated into English says "We shall piss in our robes and crap upon the sand on which we stand."

I am not normally so blunt nor insulting but they are fraying my nerves with their empty boastfulness. And for any member here who says we shouldn't provoke them lest they unleash dozens of suicide bombers upon us, recall what Neville Chamberlain achieved. There is zero chance of conciliatory efforts appeasing them and convincing them to stand down and turn into a peaceful, co-existing nation insofar as their government and clergy are concerned. That will only happen after everything plays out and the thousand years of peace comes about.

I don't know maybe it is just me, but our President sounds super pissed. Hopefully he tells Hegseth to put Operation Glass into play. Operation Glass is when the US uses Iran to test our most recent and most powerful nukes. We need to test them against underground bunkers and on large areas where military assets are based. Computer simulations are good, but real life testing is necessary to prove proof of concept. My motto is "the only good raghead is a dead one."

Trump has entered the US Department of Defense just minutes ago. CENTCOM, the U.S. Central Command, has placed all U.S. bases in the Middle East on war alert. U.S. warplanes are patrolling the Iran border. And on top of all that, Netanyahu is deep in the bunker at the Kirya in Tel Aviv.

Normally I'm glad that the art of statecraft/diplomacy has so many speed bumps and redundancies built into it-- as long as the doods are busy trash-talking and chest thumping, they've not yet settled down to the actual business of decimating one another.

..part of me was glad to finally see some credible push back in the red sea, but now that we feel to be on verge of another escalation, I'm already wishing that we had a few more false starts and rounds of trash talkin to delay us.

As far as suicide bombers or cells, there is ample proof that we do have them here, but I have never once in all my time at this site heard any credible/well informed people suggest that we should curtail our behaviors because of what they might unleash
- but yes you- and chamberlin- are absolutely correct: appeasement is not going to work.

Are the B-2s, B-1s, and the buffs all being moved to forward operating bases?
I don't know. Approx 12-18 hours ago I saw a blurb fly past that mentioned an exodus of gold(?) planes heading across conus, perhaps with a destination of the ME, but didn't run it down to figure out what might be going on :: shrug ::

I am impressed that any of the Iranian F-14s are still airworthy.
