Massive, Army-led NATO exercise Defender Europe kicks off
Todd South
Armytimes
March 15 2021

One of the largest U.S.-Army led military exercises in decades has kicked off and will run until June, with 28,000 total troops from 27 nations taking part. Defender Europe 2021 will include “nearly simultaneous operations across more than 30 training areas” in a dozen countries.

The exercise is the deployment of a division-size force from the United States to Europe, pulling equipment from Army prepositioned stocks, then moving personnel and equipment across the theater to multiple training areas.

Last year’s exercise was planned to be the largest NATO exercise in Europe in 25 years but had to be scaled back due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even so, U.S. and allied forces managed to conduct some of the planned drills and joint exercises.

This year’s wider-ranging exercise will include COVID restrictions and monitoring but will span the Balkans and the Black Sea region and use key ground and maritime routes that bridge Europe, Asia and Africa, according to a U.S. Army Europe and Africa statement.

“While we are closely monitoring the COVID situation, we’ve proven we have the capability to train safely despite the pandemic. No matter what, our nations count on our forces being ready to defend the peace,” said Gen. Christopher Cavoli, U.S. Army Europe and Africa commanding general.

The multi-faceted, months-long exercise provides the United States and allies a showcase event for crisis response, Cavoli said.

The U.S. Air Force and Navy will see an increased role in this previously largely Army affair. Planners are incorporating “new or high-end capabilities,” which include air and missile defense assets, capabilities from the Army’s Security Force Assistance Brigades and V Corps, which was recently reactivated.

Of the 28,000 total participants, an estimated 2,100 are coming from the Army National Guard and another 800 from the Army Reserve.

Equipment and personnel begin flowing this month from the United States to Europe. Next month units will draw from prepositioned stocks of gear in the Netherlands, Italy and Germany.

Defender Europe 21 acts as an overarching, umbrella-like operation that includes several exercises that run from early May to June, including:

  • Swift Response — in early May, includes airborne operations in Estonia, Bulgaria and Romania with more than 7,000 troops from 11 countries.
  • Immediate Response — mid-May to early June, has more than 5,000 troops from eight countries in 31 training areas in a dozen countries running live-fire training and a joint over-the-shore logistics operation.
  • Command Post Exercise — in June, will see 2,000 troops running a headquarters commanding multinational land forces in joint and combined training environments, all while running real-world operations in 14 countries on two continents, sharing mission command, mutual sustainment and mission partner environment.
There are two large-scale training events also running under Defender-Europe 21 this year:
  • African Lion — mid-May to mid-June, is the U.S. Africa Command annual training event using 5,000 troops from 24 nations primarily in Morocco, running large-scale live fire, medical readiness, air, maritime and forward command post training exercises.
  • Steadfast Defender — mid-May to early June, are new NATO exercises working transatlantic reinforcement, demonstrating NATO’s rapid full-scale threat response capabilities.

Putin to address Federal Assembly with annual message on April 21

The Kremlin spokesman preferred to keep quiet about the themes of the forthcoming address
TASS
April 5 2021

MOSCOW, April 5. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin will address the Federal Assembly with the annual message on April 21, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the media.

"The president will address the Federal Assembly with the annual message on April 21," he said.

Peskov added that the venue of the event would be announced later. Different options are being considered, he said.

"Let us not anticipate events. I believe that in the near future we will open accreditation for the mass media and at the same time announce the place where it will be held," Peskov said.

He preferred to keep quiet about the themes of the forthcoming address.

"Traditionally we never disclose the content or any of the themes that will be touched upon in the message. We will not do this now, too," he said.

"As far as the indexing of pensions for employed pensioners is concerned, the government has been working actively on this issue. It is true that the Cabinet of Ministers has sent different proposals on this score to the president," Peskov said when asked if the issue of pensions would be touched upon in the presidential message. He added that "no decisions have been made (on indexing pensions for working pensioners)."

^^^ Is that the old Reforger?
Yes, sounds like it

Exercise Campaign Reforger (from return of forces to Germany) was an annual exercise and campaign conducted, during the Cold War, by NATO. The exercise was intended to ensure that NATO had the ability to quickly deploy forces to West Germany in the event of a conflict with the Warsaw Pact. Although most troops deployed were from the United States, the operation also involved a substantial number of troops from other NATO countries including Canada and the United Kingdom.

If true, I wonder if the pro-Russian residents are self evacuating on their own initiative or is this more of a coordinated move by the Russians to remove "friendlies" from the upcoming battlespace?

Put yourself in the shoes of a Donetsk resident.

Rumors of war swirling all around. Buildings being sandbagged in the cities, and now flyers distributed regarding bombing precautions. Also consider what retribution Ukraine forces would extract against residents loyal to Russia.

I could see packing up the grandparents, wife, and kids in the van and getting them into Russia before the battles erupt.

The big brains currently running our foreign looked confused and bewildered. Putin has massed troops to ‘defend’ Russians and likely carve off a piece of Ukraine And make Europe look powerless and weak.

But the misdirection could be mindblowing if all this huff and puff over there in Ukraines brings Belarus completely back under the Russian tent. Belarus although continued in the great old Soviet style kept the old apparatus even as Russia morphed. Their quasi independence has been a thorn in Putin’s side and any possible movement to Nato is the stuff of Russian nightmares.

But now Putin has leveraged the Ukraine fumbling of the Biden/Obama/Soro’s/MI-6 team into potential major coup. Bringing Belarus back into the tent and locking up the buffer for Northwest area, then he is free to pivot to the South and deal with Ukraine. He has overwhelming superiority in forces but a bloody messy campaign may not be in Putin’s best interest.

There is another question since we really don’t know who or what group is calling the shot on what policy for the US. The reaction of the US is the ultimate wildcard. Losing Belarus even as a future color revolution and Ukraine may be more than even these mindless clowns can accept. Putin is playing a careful game but direct confrontation with the US does not imho serve his interests let alone all the wild lets start by going nuclear talk.

The clowns running the show may still be so infected with TDS they fail to see how they are losing the world. This is what radical progressive’s do, they are so smug and congratulating themselves on stealing the election, that all their actions and thoughts have been about consolidating power and making the US a one party state, it just may not have occurred to these masters of the universe there is a whole big world out there that is frequently mean, ugly and ruthless. And that world could care less about being woke.

These fools thought they would take over the world, I think the world may be coming for them, and by extension that mean’s us.

That was an enjoyable read.

Couple of things come to mind.

Belarus, translated is White Russia. They've always been Russia. During WWII the Nazis creamed them big time. I think only one building in Minsk survived (a church if memory serves). Most of the Belorussian population doesn't really care much for "The Ukraine," especially in light of Ukrainian/Nazi collaboration during that particular time period. The memories of The Great Patriotic War are so deeply ingrained, it's genetic. We here in the West simply can not comprehend this reality and resulting consequences.

Radiation, Ukraine soaked up and milked Chernobyl for all they could. Some people might find it odd to learn Byelorus and Russia both received more than their share of contamination. Large regions were contaminated. The Cesium & Strontium contamination maps I saw around Bryansk and Gomel were very disturbing, more than Ukraine, (outside of the closed zone).

All these parties know about radiation, what's more they know how to live with it. Also to a somewhat troubling degree, they don't seem to fear it like we do. After all, Chernobyl was 35 years ago. That's a comparative blip to a thousand years of local history. Aside from the initial losses of some nukes, most people will just shrug it off.

I have no idea what Vladimir Putin is going to do. I do however believe President Putin is a successful populist and his people - The Rus, are going to do whatever he asks them to do. There wont be a thing that Europe, Asia, or the West can do about it either.

It's cultural, it's spiritual, it's genetic.

The majority of the globe has dismissed these distinctions as irrelevant anachronisms of a bygone age.

Russia has not.

How To Start A War

Authored by Victor Davis Hanson via AmGreatness.com,

Wars often arise from uncertainty. When strong powers appear weak, truly weaker ones take risks they otherwise would not.

Sloppy braggadocio and serial promises of restraint alternatively trigger wars, too. Empty tough talk can needlessly egg on aggressors. But mouthing utopian bromides convinces bullies that their targets are too sophisticated to counter aggression.

Sometimes announcing “a new peace process” without any ability to bring either novel concessions or pressures only raises false hopes—and furor.
Every new American president is usually tested to determine whether the United States can still protect friends like Japan, Europe, South Korea, Israel, and Taiwan. And will the new commander-in-chief deter America’s enemies Iran and North Korea—and keep China and Russia from absorbing their neighbors?

Joe Biden, and those around him, seem determined to upset the peace they inherited.
Soon after Donald Trump left office, Vladimir Putin began massing troops on the Ukrainian border and threatening to attack.

Putin earlier had concluded Trump was dangerously unpredictable, and perhaps better not provoked. After all, the Trump Administration took out Russian mercenaries in Syria. It beefed up defense spending and upped sanctions.

The Trump Administration flooded the world with cheap oil to Russia’s chagrin. It pulled out from asymmetrical missile treaties with Russia. It sold sophisticated arms to the Ukrainians. The Russians concluded that Trump might do anything, and so waited for another president before again testing America.

In contrast, Biden too often talks provocatively—while carrying a twig. He has gratuitously called Putin “a killer.” And he warned that the Russian dictator “would pay a price” for supposedly interfering in the 2020 election.

Unfortunately, his bombast follows four years of a Russian-collusion hoax, fueled by a concocted dossier paid for by 2016 candidate Hillary Clinton. Biden and others swore Trump was—in the words of Barack Obama’s former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper—a “Russian asset.”

If Biden seeks to provoke a nation with 7,500 deliverable weapons, he is certainly not backing up his rhetoric with force.
He has cut military aid to Ukraine. And Biden may well decrease the Pentagon budget.
He seems to have forgotten that Trump was impeached for supposedly imperiling Ukraine, when in fact he sold to it the very weapons Biden and others in the Obama Administration had vetoed.

Russia & Belarus Say US-Backed "Assassination" & "Coup" Attempt Against Lukashenko Thwarted
Tyler Durden's Photo

BY TYLER DURDEN
MONDAY, APR 19, 2021 - 04:15 AM
Russian and Belarusian state sources are alleging that a major assassination and "coup" attempt of Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko has been thwarted by security services, which has further been dubbed in state media as an "armed insurrection" attempt which may have had the backing of the United States.

However, details surrounding the alleged 'plot' remain murky and it doesn't appear that anything actually close to an 'insurrection' ever got off the ground. Instead, multiple Belarussian officials were reportedly arrested on vague suspicions of treasonous plotting. Russia's FSB is also widely reported to have detained two conspirators in Moscow for their association with the plot.

"Several people, including two in Russia, have been arrested for allegedly plotting an armed insurrection against the Belarusian president," RT describes of the Belarusian media reports. "He claims that the US may have sanctioned the assassination attempt."

Via Reuters
It comes after prior months of growing protests against the longtime autocrat, and after pro-democracy opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya from exile urged for more opposition to Lukashenko's rule in the streets after a security services crackdown of the past months.
Europe's "last dictator" - as Lukashenko sometimes calls himself, recently claimed victory and was sworn in for a sixth term last September after already being 24 years in power, which set off the widespread protests.

Here's more of RT's description of the alleged anti-Lukashenko coup plotting:
The existence of an alleged plot to kill Lukashenko, other top Belarusian officials, and even their family members was revealed on Saturday. In Minsk, the national broadcaster ONT ran a story naming suspected conspirators and exposing their plans. The report offered as evidence several clips of what appears to be Zoom meetings between them.

And some of the details discussed among the officials were said to be captured by a hidden recording:

The plan discussed at the meeting, as described by the FSB, involved killing "almost the entire leadership" of Belarus, a military coup, and a power blackout of the entire country. "It was suggested that the active phase would be launched by some armed groups (‘partisans’), who are currently stationed at 'secret bases'," the FSB reported. The action was reportedly scheduled for May 9, when Belarus holds a military parade dedicated to the victory over Nazi Germany in 1945.
Hidden camera footage of what appeared to be the meeting in Moscow was aired by the ONT in its expose. In it, Zenkovich and Feduta detailed their suggestions on how to conduct a successful armed coup. They said Lukashenko needs to be "disposed of" and at least 30 in Minsk – presumably top officials – need to be "interned literally within the first hour."
In a subsequent televised address, the Belarusian leaders explained: "we detained the group [of coup plotters], they showed us how they had planned everything, I remained silent." He then accused the US of assisting in the plot: "Then we discovered the work of clearly foreign intelligence services, most likely the FBI, the CIA."

At the height of the contested reelection protests last August, Lukashenko and other top officials said that NATO had built up forces along Belarus' Western border. He warned at the time that his military would immediately 'react' with force to any NATO provocation.
However, the crisis has since died down after a severe crackdown by police and security services, which involved stationing armed vehicles and tanks surrounding the presidential palace complex in Minsk.

Lots of talk about Russian intel ops in Ireland following Czech expulsions. Both SVR and GRU do operate here but also operate across the EU. We only stand out because the public are generally unaware of their activities but don’t be fooled AGS and OnH very much are. #Russia

Also I’m very wary about what some experts are saying. Both SVR and GRU run illegal networks across the EU. Their spies are not always based in embassies. Most live among us, purporting to be journalists, academics and IT specialists or whatever using a variety of EU passports.

Would strongly suspect the 18 diplomats expelled from Czech Rep are just a fraction of the Russian service personnel operating in that country.

Discussion on martial law in Ukraine ahead of conflict with Russia Still discussing measures...

WarNews 247
April 19 2021
Translated from Greek

Public debate is taking place in Ukraine on the imposition of martial law in the country in the face of the Russian threat.

Ukrainian parliament speaker Dmitry Razumkov spoke about the possibility of introducing martial law into the country on Channel 4, a local report says.

As the head of Ukraine's Verhovna Rada (parliament) notes, there are currently no grounds for the introduction of martial law in the country, because this requires a corresponding decree of the country's president.

But since there is no such decree, there is no case for imposing a military regime, Razumkov notes.

At the same time, parliament is ready to take the necessary measures if necessary, Verhovna's head Rada said.

It is noted that martial law in Ukraine throughout its history since the independence of the country, was introduced only once:

this was done between 26 November and 26 December 2018, following the illegal seizure of Ukrainian Naval Forces ships by Russia.

Martial law was then established in 10 regions of Ukraine with access to the Black and Azophical Seas, as well as to the border with Russia, occupied Crimea and the Republic of Moldova.

In the last period, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski has made changes to the regulation on the military service of civilians in the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

In particular, the formation of military administrations was established in the event of the introduction of martial law.
