Hurricanes have a way with making monkeys out of the models.

Why I call them Spaghetti Guesses.

Hurricane Fiona has done some damage in far northern Canada and the forecaster's did not see it coming or changing the "weather models" like it has and really stirred things up and sending way early cold temperatures south into the United States.

I have a friend who is currently touring Iceland and the winds of Fiona have hit there and in a big way.

My wife is ready to start looking for a spot in the shelter. I was born here. I couldn't even guess how many storms I've been through. All Cats. I'm prepped as I can be, so I'll sit tight and ride it out. The wife askes, "What are you going to do if a tree falls on you?"

"Honey, trees fall on shelters too. Besides, I'm not worried about it. You see, The One who controls the storm, worries about me."

Drives her nuts every time. In nearly 40 years of marriage, we got hit by a tree once. No one was injured and insurance paid for it. When it happened, I was able to cover the hole with a tarp and keep the entire house from flooding out. There is also the matter of some people taking advantage of the situation and looting damaged places while the owners are at the shelter. I'll just sit here, thank you very much.

After Katrina, it’s hard to understand seeking public shelter, unless you live in a trailer park.

I’d rather take my chances on nature rather than crazy hungry humans.

after everything I've read about Katrina, Wilma, etc., I'd sooner take my chances at home than being stranded out on some stupid interstate some place. I can't even begin to imagine that kind of horror... and I went through Gloria a Cat 1 cane that hit the east coast back in the 80's.

Has No Life - Lives on TB
We are going to get hammered in central FL. It is moving SLOW so it will be over us for 24 hours of joy.
Do you feel this is worse than getting slammed all at once and over with, then?

I’ve no idea, have never lived through a hurricane, personally. I just see and read from way up here in Indiana

Prayers for all.

I've got a brother who lives in Hudson, just north of Tampa. You can stand on the corner of his land, bend over, turn your head to the left, and be looking into the Gulf of Mexico. He's had storm surge bring the water right up to his back door in the past. It's looking like a near miss for me. But my home is concrete block. His is a trailer. He knows the invitation is open.

Headed right for my kinfolk. Dear Lord have mercy. One is right on the bay in St. Pete's.

It is rare for a hurricane to come right up the mouth of the Bay but when you live here you always plan as if it could happen. We've spent a good chunk of money this year having the trees around our rental properties to get a good haircut. We'll see.

The truth is you can only do so much. You just never know. Plan for the worst, pray for the best, and hope your neighbors are doing the same. If I'm not around much for the next week or two you'll know we've got a lot going on at the properties. Five years ago we lost power for a week due to Maria. I did the idiot and let my freezers get full again. Sigh. How in the heck did I let this happen? At least I have the packing strap to put around the freezer if the power goes out. The stupid thing needs a new gasket and when it gets too warm loses its seal.

Mom is in Ft. Myers - looks like they may escape the worst of it, being about an hour south of Tampa (hopefully).

She does have an option to stay with friends who live in Bonita and have a home generator, as well as options to temporarily relocate to the 3rd floor of her unit (she lives on the 1st floor) if there looks to be any flooding.

We talked last night about getting some buckets filled with water for flushing / washing, as well as creating extra ice for her freezer (filling up ziplock bags with water and putting them in the freezer now, so that they are solid if/when she loses power in the storm).

I think I'm more worried for her than she is, but then she just lost her husband 6 weeks ago...
