In case the electricity goes out.
We have a similar version of this. My Korean wife uses it often but mostly when her friends get together (not much right now) and it does a pretty good job. I suspect the one in the OP does similar. The key as I see it is to have the pots warmed already and the food in the inner pot quite hot before you put it in the inner pot. Cooks all day while you're busy doing other things. No smell to waft out for other folks to be curious about. In essence, a crockpot. Here's the amazon link for the one we have:

I don't see much prep value here. You still have to have a way to cook. Yes I know that you only have to partially cook and then use this but still little real value. A hay box is free and very easy to make in any size you want. It would be very easy to make a hundred variations of your own design for very little money.

Any kind of a solar cooker would likely be a better choice. Again you could make your own for little money. That way you could do unlimited cooking(though it does require a sunny day).
I really like my Sun Oven and use that rather than our regular oven often because I like it better.

I bought one a while back, works fine.

ETA: I can't remember if it was for something hot or cold, but it did its job of keeping the food either cold or hot.

I remember my Danish MIL talking about cooking during WW2. They only had the gas on for about two hours a day, so they would get something started and then wrap it up in blankets to finish cooking. My husband has told me about his Dad doing the same thing in Florida, especially wrapping up the risengrod (rice pudding) in blankets to finish it.

I have a Sun Oven too and really like it. It can also serve the function of a crock pot. I also have a parabolic cooker which is also great--one sunny winter morning outside in our snowy yard (temp around 32F), I fried bacon and eggs on a griddle I placed in the focal point. The kids were astounded and got a science lesson without realizing it. I also have two Go-sun solar tube cookers which cook faster than my Sun Oven and parabolic cooker but the amount of food per cooking is very limited. They work great for what they do but fall into the hobbyist category. My use for the thermal cookers (haybox cookers) are for when the sun doesn't shine. In essence, they stretch out the wood or propane fuel supply. But they are also good to take to picnics when/where fires are not permitted but you want hot food. I enjoy threads like this. I learn a lot.
