Heard the ravens squawking a minute ago and went outside to see what was going on. The great twice a year migration has started and they are circling and landing in our trees. Quite a sight to see.

I wish I was able to do that. It is amazing in the morning when they are stretching their wings and warming them before takeoff. Tomorrow we will have loads of twigs to pick up.

I don't need pictures. Those "Things" are ugly as all get out. LOL. Disgusting creatures they are. One flew into my windshield in a U-Haul at 60 mph. He just couldn't give up the road kill in time. Cracked the windshield upside down from Sunday and in the cab it sounded like a gunshot.

A few months back on my local walking trail I came upon a black vulture eating a dead cat 15 feet from me. It was a lovely site. :boohoo:

I came upon a Turkey Vulture roost one afternoon on Guntersville lake, it was an awesome encounter. I was in my canoe turned the corner and there they were! I can't remember how many but it was a huge amount. They sat there silently until I got too close. They took off silently. Each Vulture sounded like someone swinging a 8 foot rope. Memorable indeed.

I'm glad someone gets how spectacular they are in numbers. Yes the noise their wings make sounds just like that.

Work under a cell tower that is a vulture roost and you won't have any great affinity for them.

The messican buzzards get shot on sight.

I had one sitting on the top of my old barn, looking at my chickens. I went over and took pictures and videos and it scared him off.

They have taken up home in my neighborhood. My SIL lives next door she had around 75 hanging out on her house, yard and deck for about two hrs the other day. They have woken me up in the mornings running on my roof.
I hate the damn things.
They like to roost on the cell tower and power lines just up the street from my house. I bet there are 200 or more some days

A long time ago, I was moving back to CO from Houston. I think was either the 1st night or the second I parked somewhere for the nite. There was a fetid pond/lake with huge dead cottonwoods all over the place.
And hundreds of vultures parked on the dead trees. Everything covered in white feces from the birds. That was one of the weirdest things I EVER saw.

Wheat or Tare, which are you?
When I walk to the park dumpster to throw my trash in, there's usually a flock of 'em milling around. They scatter and get out of my way when I come.

I have regular visitations on my chimney by both turkey and black vultures. The black vulture is a relatively new comer in this part of Alabama, when I was a kid you never saw them.

The black vulture seems like it's in a transitional stage development of the species due to the fact it seems to struggle in its flight pattern. It appears to be a work in progress.

They are more aggressive, will run turkey vultures off a carcass.

They will also kill calves.

They are a wee bit smaller, have beaks more like a large hawk than a buzzard ( turkey vulture), have full coverage of feathers on head and much heavier talons. They kill newborn calves here regularly.
#4 shot in a 12 gauge handles them nicely but they are protected and you need a permit to legally kill them here (KY). Permits are easily obtained.

There are buzzards at dh's jobsite. They eat the roof covering of his work trailer and will destroy windshield wipers, the rubber seal and on the windshields, and anything plastic he says.

Finally not a lurker!
Precious the Wonder Dog ignores all other flying creatures except turkey vultures which she HATES.

This too shall pass.
Buzzards and vultures have an important place in nature -- they clean up dead things. So I'm thankful for them, no matter how ugly and disgusting they are.

I didn't know we had the black kind -- I think I saw one Monday when we were on our way out to go to town. I thought maybe it was an immature of the regular kind. It was standing in our little one-lane road, hopping around awkwardly, and appeared to have something wrong with one wing, as it was holding it funny and couldn't fly. It did manage to hop over the fence and get out of the road.

And got to say again my bad. I'm going to have to get out of this thread. LOL

I was thinking it was a place where ........Buzzards Roosted, go figure. It's the name of place where an indian chief put an inn. Been by there dozens of times. Never stopped. Always looked like an interesting place to watch......buzzards roost.
