The price of seeds

Is it just me or are the price of seeds getting ridiculously high? I see $1.97 to $2.79 for the majority of them here. I save seed and grow all non hybrid so I rarely have to buy but when I do it shocks me. I'm thinking of maybe saving more seed and selling them for a buck a pack. Whatta ya think?

Most seed catalogs are cheaper than buying at say walmart. Bakercreek for heirlooms and Pinetree for everything are both reasonable.

Also bulk seed at a feed and seed store is the cheapest way. So much for a scoop of seed.

Thanks for the replies rafter and jacque. The seeds are still running $1.25 on the low end and you get maybe 20 of the bigger seeds like beans or calendula for instance. It just amazes me because I do save seed from most of my plants and have hundreds and hundreds of them. I give them away or just throw them all in the pots when I start new plants in the spring. I'm thinking I should just package some. Maybe I'm just realizing what a gold mine I used to have here in my little town before the last of the old fashioned bargain centers closed their doors this last year. I could buy parsley, basil etc seeds for .10 a pack. Call me cheap if ya will! lol

I understand what you are saying about the cost. But, when I think of all the work needed to make sure there is no cross pollination of, say the Brandywines and the Boxcar Willies, the time required to ferment the seeds, dry them, pack them, etc... I do not mind paying the price.

But, I am a home gardener. I know how to save seeds, and do so when it is easy to do so. I don't save tomato seeds because I am not able to plant them far enough apart to make sure there is no cross pollination of the varieties I plant.

Since I planted the "yard" in clover, I got lotsa bees, lol!

Bees are good and I've heard people around here complain that they don't have the bees they used to for pollination. It's a good thing to have them jacque even if you have to dodge them now and then. ;) I only plant non hybrid seeds so I'm not too worried about cross pollinations but I understand what you are saying. Think I'll be a little more vigorous this year on saving seed.
