I think it has also been driven by ESG. These companies are going broke over woke. If not broke, they are not making the revenues they are used to by dealing in ESG.

Now this makes no sense, he was a millionaire and then went broke.

It was all in "Stock/Shares", everything on paper and then the next day everything burned up when the stock/shares went bust. Happened to my SIL who was in the banking/mortgage business. Had she pulled her shares out and converted them to physical cash she would have been Ok, but instead she let them sit and "gain value" until suddenly they weren't of any value. She lost millions of pseudo dollars. We can't talk about that time even today. It just makes her sick.

I'm going to float a question that may trigger some people, but here goes: given the rising tide of excess deaths globally (at least in western countries), might we see the supply of labor fall sharply in the coming years?

It's not immediately clear what's causing these deaths, but if the trend continues we could be looking at a feedback loop of fewer people alive, leading to less demand for "stuff," leading companies to reduce employees, which further weakens the demand for "stuff," followed by more excess deaths.

Rinse and repeat. The end result is a steady and unending contraction of the global economy.

Am I crazy?

No.

Very good analysis of the "collateral damage" caused by the you-know-what storm the globalists have unleashed on the world.

Yep! Get a barter network going now. Or at least talk with trusted folks about what they would accept if the money we have now becomes worthless.

If your area is like mine, no one wants gold. They do want junk silver, silver (like stamped silver rounds), food, labor, gas (or rides places), child care, or really tasty baked goods: (pies, cakes, bread).

I may be off (no comments on that please) since I am retired, and not in the work force, and don't want to be in the work force, and if you suggest I be in the work force you'll get my bad eyes, so.......

From what I am reading so far, most of the lay off's are in tech companies that provide a service, and not a product. Amazon, Twitter, etc. And like production companies, if a company can operate without people, the less the better.

So, so far it appears to be mostly coders. And if you took Biden's advice, to become a coder, I just want to say one thing Hahahahahaha, you took Bidens advice. LOL

Tech companies are now seeing what life in the real world looks like. Once it gets down to the basic's the lay off's may stop or the business will go out of business.

It use to be coders had free day care in house, free lunches, free starbucks, free toilet paper, tattoo shops down the street, and hair dressers with all the colors of the rainbow, body piercings. And they laughed at all the slavers going to work in red plaid shirts, and lunch buckets, hard hats, stinking when they got off work, and steel toe shoes.

Companies that provide a product like tires, furniture, appliances (except gas) with exceptions I'm sure, so far seem to be doing ok. At least in our area.

When companies are wallowing in the green backs it's good to share the wealth. When they ain't, they like all other companies, staring at the bottom line, will gut jobs and benefits.

I will bite.

Depends, jobs like real estate are local. We hear a lot about these layoffs because its hitting tech and finance. Hitting Cali and NY and also hitting crappy leftist media and news divisions. Since they only know NY and Cali the moron media thinks this is the whole world. (they should get put more)

Wwaaaahhh. If you are skilled in turning wrenches or can work production you are in super high demand especially if you can pass a drug test.

I see this ‘recession’ to be primarily in white collar office jobs and managers of managers.

Remember many CEO’s get stock options as part of their pay and nothing makes wall street happier than a CEO that whacks a bunch of head count. Plus if the company has some financial slime hidden in the balance sheet nothing like filling a bad quarterly earnings ‘kitchen sink’ announcement crap sandwich with a 10% head count reduction sweetener.

The Fed is trying to hit jobs enough to prevent the Fed government free money for demo’s friends and family spending bill from creating wage inflation spiral. Working against them is Boomer retirements and reverse outsourcing production back to US.

Just had someone stop by that needed a specific skill set that my husband could provide. They bartered it out. Involved a wild hog!

Why so many TECH jobs, I wonder? I thought those were pretty bullet-proof
bullet proof i would say if you work for a company in the i.t. dept.
if you work for one of those big i.t. companies where all are i.t., then yes, gone.

so many have recently relocated to a new city. boom, gone.
im also wondering with so many being terminated by email,
when is the mass shooting going to start.

I sure hope you are wrong about the mass shooting thing...
I've thought for a long time that some in I.T. were paid a significant premium over other similar intelligence/ability work. Now a sharp IT person is like a sharp person anywhere...worth quadruple what the average guy is worth.
With that in mind, I'm not intending to demean anyone or anyone's work, every worker is needed in my estimation.

My concern is that many tech workers are disconnected with how hard the "lessor classes" work, and if many tens of thousands of these workers are cut loose....for a long time or even permanently, many will have a difficult time transitioning into other forms of meaningful employment.
And, most on this forum are old enough to know transitioning as we age needs to move to less physically demanding work, not moving from a keyboard to something "active"....I mean you can get a job as a plumber instantly around these parts, but that is awfully hard work for someone in the last decade of their work life.

For what it’s worth Wal-mart announced today that base pay coming in the door will be $14.00 an hour starting next month.
Without context that is meaningless.

Is $14/hour lower or higher than they have been paying in the past? I thought Walmart was already at $15/hour or more.

ETA: Found an article about this. It was a raise from $12/hour. They mentioned that TARGET went to $15/hour. That is what I was remembering but thought that was Walmart.

Elections have consequences. Folks didn’t learn from 2020, folks doubled down on stupid in 2022, so here we go……. :kaid:

What’s interesting is that even with price increases, ”everybody“ still wants pizza. From what I understand from a family member who manages a region, Dominos still gets slammed regularly.

It's the natural, predictable "next" step in a recession/depression.
Anybody taken by surprise has failed to learn their history and/or heed the warnings.

That's why all the young folks lately bitching about being abused/taken advantage/not appreciated enough by their employer are laughable to those who've seen such times. A steady paycheck during a severe economic downturn is worth it's weight, and you do damned near anything to keep it coming.
Over the years, most of this country’s pain is and was caused by our government.

All of America’s pains are the result of her choosing go along to get along, rather than to exercise the right and duty of conscience.

A strict adherence to conscience, among only 1-5% of Americans, and your representative government had been brought to its knees.

For example…..”my tax dollars will be funding abortions ? pressure on young and vulnerable Americans to choose abortion ?

My tax dollars are going to fund the sexual and mental debauchery of America’s youth in the public schools ?

My tax dollars are going to the wholesale murder of civilians in foreign nations, specifically targeted ?

Clean up your unconstitutional, immoral, unconscionable, Godless and excessive bullshit, representatives in government.

Until then….no more funding from me.

Simply quote James Madison as you close…..

“The Religion then of every man must be left to the conviction and conscience of every man; and it is the right of every man to exercise it as these may dictate. This right is in its nature an unalienable right. It is unalienable, because the opinions of men, depending only on the evidence contemplated by their own minds cannot follow the dictates of other men: It is unalienable also, because what is here a right towards men, is a duty towards the Creator. It is the duty of every man to render to the Creator such homage and such only as he believes to be acceptable to him. This duty is precedent, both in order of time and in degree of obligation, to the claims of Civil Society. Before any man can be considered as a member of Civil Society, he must be considered as a subject of the Governour of the Universe: And if a member of Civil Society, who enters into any subordinate Association, must always do it with a reservation of his duty to the General Authority; much more must every man who becomes a member of any particular Civil Society, do it with a saving of his allegiance to the Universal Sovereign. We maintain therefore that in matters of Religion, no mans right is abridged by the institution of Civil Society and that Religion is wholly exempt from its cognizance.”

Then quote Theophilus Parsons…..

“All men are born equally free. The rights they possess at their births are equal, and of the same kind. Some of those rights are alienable, and may be parted with for an equivalent. Others are unalienable and inherent, and of that importance, that no equivalent can be received in exchange. Sometimes we shall mention the surrendering of a power to controul our natural rights, which perhaps is speaking with more precision, than when we use the expression of parting with natural rights— but the same thing is intended. Those rights which are unalienable, and of that importance, are called the rights of conscience. We have duties, for the discharge of which we are accountable to our Creator and benefactor, which no human power can cancel. What those duties are, is determinable by right reason, which may be, and is called, a well informed conscience. What this conscience dictates as our duty, is so; and that power which assumes a controul over it, is an usurper; for no consent can be pleaded to justify the controul, as any consent in this case is void.

Big tech giants have laid off tens of thousands of employees over the past few months as recession fears, persistent inflation, and rising interest rates continue to weigh on earnings results. The likes of Google, Amazon, and Meta have let go of nearly 40,000 employees combined.
But Gene Munster, managing partner at the tech-focused investment and venture capital firm Deepwater Asset Management (formerly Loup Ventures), believes the worst is yet to come.
“There’s still another 15% to 20% of headcount reductions for these big tech companies in the next three to six months,” he told CNBC on Monday.
