The Indian woman

It was in the afternoon and Jim and Albert were heading back to the Jail from the Boardinghouse. That’s when they saw him. A man with an Indian woman rode up to the Saloon. He was the biggest man Jim had ever saw. He must have been close to seven feet tall and three hundred and fifty pounds. Albert remarked, “Damn, he’s a giant!”

Saloon-s.jpgThe Big man, “We’re going to stay here now Amara. I told you not to fret yourself nobody’s going to bother you. Look there’s the Giddy Up Saloon. You know a man might find whiskey fit to drink in a place like that. Just drop your rains over the rack Amara your old Pony ain’t about to go nowhere.”

Amara insisted, “I will wait right here Jacob.”

Jacob replied, “Here in the dust and Heat. Come on get down off that old horse you’ve been riding so long. You need to walk around some.”

Amara agreed, “All right.’

Jacob insisted, “Anyway it’s cooler inside if they got a lady’s parlor you can set in there.”

Amara replied, “I’ll set on the porch.”

Jacob took her hand, “Come on I’m sure they got a place inside.”

Jim exclaimed, “Albert! He’s taking her inside!”

Albert replied, “I see that. We better go make sure there’s not trouble.”

Vivian saw the man with the Indian woman come in the door. She Jumped up from Earl’s lap and headed to the door. Greeting the woman she said, “Can I help you Mam?”

Jacob replied, “Do you have a lady’s parlor where my wife can wait for me?”

Vivian replied, “I’m Vivian. If you come with me I’ll show you a place.”

Jacob went to the bar and called, “I’ll have a Whiskey.”

A man demanded, “Wait, hold that drink bartender. Maybe you picked the wrong place to drink Mister. There’s a place down along the river. That’s where you should take that Indian woman.

Jacob replied, “I’ve heard tell.”

The man insisted, “Maybe that’s where you better go.”

Jacob called out, “Bartender I ain’t got my drink yet.”

The man explained, “Mister you don’t understand what I said. That bartender isn’t going to give you no drink.”

Jacob replied, “Maybe he is.”

The man insisted, “No he ain’t this place don’t serve nobody that walks in with no dirty Indian Squaw.”

With that Jacob took one swing knocking him back five feet, and out cold. Albert came in the door and yelled, “All right hold it! All right you men take Reigert out to the horse trough. Then drop him in and soak his head. As for the rest of you get about your business.”

WT-s.jpgJacob complained, “Come on you busted up what could have been a man size fight.”

Albert insisted, “Well fights like that lead to killings. You’re a cool one Mister.”

Jacob explained, “You get that way in my profession.”

Albert asked, “Oh, what’s that?”

Jacob replied, “Army Scout I’m on my way to Fort Boise what’s yours.”

Albert replied, “I’m the Sheriff my name’s Albert.”

Jacob admitted, “Sheriff I noticed they paid you a heap of attention. I’m Jacob Shepard and proud to know you Sheriff. I want you to meet somebody. This here is Amara she’s my wife.”

Albert replied, “How do you do ma’am, Vivian.”

Jacob went on, “Amara and me been traveling quite a spell.”

Albert questioned, “Where’d you ride from.”

Jacob revealed, “We came down from Montana. I figured we’d stay over here in Dention if I can find a place. Amara’s been feeling poorly.”

Albert questioned, “How long do you figure on staying in Dention Jacob?”

Jacob replied, “Can’t rightly say Sheriff.”

Albert insisted, “You made trouble for yourself when you hit Mr. Reigert.”

Jacob replied, “That right.”

Albert explained, “It’ll bother him Jacob and he’ll be after you. I know you can’t make Fort Boise, so it might be better if you and your wife rode out to Lambert and stayed.”

Amara agreed, “There he’s right Jacob. We should go on right now we don’t want no trouble.”

Jacob insisted, “You’ve been riding enough the way you feel. Besides I got things to do.

Albert insisted, “Look Jacob I don’t want any trouble here.

Jacob replied, “I sure don’t aim to cause any now. How about joining me in a drink Sheriff I still got a glass of Rye coming.

Dention was real quiet for the next week until a drunken Cowboy tried to burn the town down. He’d lost a poker game with Ace at the Saloon.

Albert kept an eye on Otto Reigert, but the trouble He’d been expecting between him and Jacob Shepard seemed to blow over. James heard somewhere that Jacob had found a room for Amara and himself at the Widow Tulley’s place out at the edge of town. Albert didn’t see Jacob again except once when he drove the Widow’s Buckboard into town, and loaded it up with food and supplies. Then he drove back out.

Then one morning while James was cleaning up the office Jacob walked in. “Morning Sheriff.”

Albert replied, “Hello Jacob. I never did get a chance to pay you back for that drink you bought me.

Jacob replied, “The time will come Sheriff.”

Albert went on, “Oh Jacob this is James Hanson.”

Jim replied, “Jacob Shepard, well sir I’m that proud to meet Mr. Shepard.”

Jacob replied, “Howdy.”

Jim revealed, “Albert told me how you knocked old Otto Reigert across the bar at the Giddy Up. I sure do wish I’d seen that.”

Albert explained, “James isn’t too fond of Otto.”

Jacob insisted, “Well if I’m going to hit him again I’ll let you know.”

Jim replied, “Well thank you.”

Jacob went on, “Sheriff what I come for was to get your help. I don’t know much about doctors and all. They say you’re a good friend to the one in Lambert.”

Albert acknowledged, “Oh I’ve known Doc for a long time what do you need?”

Jacob replied, “Well I’m not sure but Amara’s feeling real puny. I think maybe someone should have a look at her. We ain’t been married but 5 months and I don’t understand much about women folk and their ailments.”

Albert insisted, “James run up to the boardinghouse and get Doc. Patrick is with Rebecca doing a check up on our Baby Bella.”

Jim insisted, “I’m on it Albert. “

Jacob went on, “You See Sheriff the thing that bothers me the most is that I got to start out for Fort Boise right soon. I already stayed here longer than I intended.”

Albert insisted, “Well if your wife’s sick you can’t take her with you on a ride like that.”

Jacob agreed, “That’s what I want to know from the doc is if she’s too sick to ride.”

Albert suggested, “Well you could leave her here and she could come on later.”

Jacob insisted, “I’d just pure hate to leave her behind if I didn’t have to.”

Patrick came in the Jail, “Oh well hello Albert where’s the patient?”

Albert informed, “Doc this is Jacob Shepard.”

Patrick replied, “Howdy.”

Albert went on, “Mr Shepard wants you to have a look at his wife.”

Patrick insisted, “I’m ready my bag’s by the door there.

Jacob revealed, “Doc maybe you ought to know before you come with me my wife’s an Indian. The only reason I mention it is some folks here seem to take exception to her.”

Patrick insisted, “Oh for heaven’s sake standing here talking isn’t going to help Mrs. Shepard any. If she’s sick you know.”

They took the Doc’s buggy to the Widow Tulley’s place and Patrick checked Amara. Patrick revealed, “You ready to go young father?”

Jacob affirmed, “I’m ready doc. I want to thank you.”

Patrick insisted, “Sure see you.”

hor-shoe.jpgAt the Horseshoe Jim and Albert were having a bite. Jim asked, “What does he do for a Living?”

Albert replied, “It’s an army Scout he says. He’s on his way out to Fort Boise. I always had in mind that Scouts was more tricky.”

Jim insisted, “He’s no more Sly than me.”

Albert replied, “Don’t let Jacob fool you James he can take care of himself.”

Jim acknowledged, “Well one thing’s for sure. He doesn’t seem to let nothing upset him none.”

Albert reminded, “Well he’s worried about his wife James.”

Watching Jim shove another wheat cake down Albert muttered, “You’ve had plenty James. You’re going to get a belly ache.”

Jim insisted, “I can’t help it Albert ever since I was a little boy. I just get a craving for wheat cakes at supper.”

pancakes-s.jpgAlbert declared, “Four servings Jim.”

Jim replied, “Well I… it does make up to quite a pile don’t it, but then that molasses kind of keeps them wetted down.”

Doc came in, “Oh hello Albert, James.”

Albert inquired, “Doc you going to eat?”

Patrick replied, “No Albert I ate out at Widow Tulley’s with Jacob and his wife”

Albert asked, “How is she Doc?”

Patrick affirmed, “She’s resting easy. You know she’s a pretty little thing, and just as nice and sweet.”

Albert queried, “Yeah she is. What was wrong with her doc?”

Patrick assured, “Nothing that won’t be right in about 6 more months.”

Jim muttered, “Well that don’t make sense Doc.”

Patrick uttered, “She’s going to have a baby.”

Jim remarked, “She is?”

Patrick insisted, “Well it only took a minute to see that.”

Albert confessed, “I guess he meant it when he said he didn’t know much about women.”

Jim assured, “I should think a baby would be easy enough to tell.”

Patrick went on, “Oh yes Jacob sent a message to you Albert. He’s going on out to Fort Boise, and says after he reports into the colonel and gets the place ready. He’ll come back for Amara.

Albert remarked, “Now that’s a 4 day ride there and back.”

Patrick acknowledged, “Well I know.”

Albert admitted, “I don’t like Mrs. Shepard staying alone here in Dention.”

Patrick insisted, “There’s nothing to be worried about she’s in good hands here.”

Albert reminded, “But Mrs. Tulleys an old lady doc she wouldn’t be much help to Amara.”

Patrick inquired, “Well what kind of help would she be needing?”

Albert declared, “More than an old lady could give her. If Otto Reigert finds out that she’s alone.”

Store-fs.jpgThe next day at the store Hank announced, “That’s about everything Mrs Shepard. I’ll give you a hand out to the buck board.”

Amara insisted, “Oh it’s not that much I can carry it.”

Hank announced, “I’ll get the door for you then ma’am.

Amara replied, “Thank you Hank good day.”

Hank mumbled, “Have a good day.”

Otto barked, “Well if it ain’t Mrs. Shepard. She’s come to town to do a week’s shopping. I beg your pardon ma’am. I ain’t being very polite. This here is Kane Twig and I’m Otto Reigert.”

Amara asked, “What do you want now?”

Otto replied, “Surely you remember me mam. You ought to I was the fellow your husband hit in the mouth. It was his first day in town.”

Amara insisted, “I remember you now let me pass.”

Otto pushed, “Well ain’t I being a miserable cuss. Letting you carry all them heavy sacks. I’ll help you some just put them in the wagon for you. Oh oh that was mighty careless of me to let it slip Plum out of my hands. I hope there was nothing in there to Brave!”

Amara insisted, “Leave me alone please.”

Otto demanded, “Well now Mrs. Shepard I don’t know why you’re upset. You know I wouldn’t do anything to harm a fine lady like you, besides your husband might try to give me another lesson in manners. That scares me real bad. I just want to show you how much I learned. Now you go on get on that buck board. What we’re going to do is just start you for home Mrs. Shepard.

Then Otto forced Amara up on the buck board as Kane tide the rains to the tong.

Amara ordered, “Untie them lines so I can face that team down the street!”

Otto laughed, “Sure like I say ma’am. I don’t want you to fret none. Stand aside Twig. All right ma’am hang on.”

buck-b.jpgThen he slapped the horse on the ass and it took off as he laughed. The horse ran wild down the street heading out of town. At the Saloon one of the buck board wheels hooked on the hitching post. It busted off the buck board flipping it on its side. This threw Amara from the buck board.

The sounds of the crash made everyone rush from the Saloon to see what happened. The Saloon girl Vivian ran to Amara side as Earl ordered, “Frank get the Sheriff!”

Getting the news Jim blinked to Lambert and got the Doctor. It was late in the day when the doctor got to the Widow Tulley’s place. The days went by as Jim and Albert took Otto and Kane to Lambert to see the Judge.

Jim and Albert went out to the Widow Tulley’s just in time to see the Doc coming out with his head hanging down. Albert Asked, “How is she doc?”

Doc replied, “She’s all right Albert she’s fine.”

Albert questioned, “And the baby?”

Doc muttered, “There wasn’t anything I could do.”

Albert grumbled, “Those miserable..”

Doc insisted, “Take it easy what are you talking about Albert?”

Albert complained, “Those men should be..”

Jim insisted, “No no Albert did all he could. He even rough them up a little on the way to jail.”

Albert bitched, “Oh and then yesterday morning the judge fined them and turned them loose.”

Jim added, “Yah he only fined them all of $50.

Vivian stood at the doorway and whined, “You and your precious law. I’m sick of it.”

Albert insisted, “You have to go by it Vivian whether it seems right or not.”

Vivian complained, “I don’t have to do nothing.”

Albert declared, “Vivian don’t talk like that.”

Vivian replied, “That there’s a man I would shoot in the belly.”

Albert insisted, “No Vivian.”

Vivian replied, “Oh leave me alone both of you.”

Doc requested, “Vivian, look why don’t you go in and talk with her. She needs another woman right now.”

A few days later Jacob came back to town. He stopped at the store and Hank told him to go talk to the sheriff.

Jacob came in the Jail announcing, “I just got back from talking with Hank at the store. He said there’s been an accident, and I should come see you.”

Albert informed, “Well your wife was hurt bad Jacob, but she’s better now.”

Jacob questioned, “Where is she?”

Albert informed, “She’s still out at the Widow Tulley’s. Vivian has been watching over her. James will ride out there with you.”

Jacob went back out the door and Jim admitted, “I know, it just makes me sick Albert. He’s likely been in the saddle all day riding to get back to her. Then he gets here and has this to face.”

Then Jim went out the door after Jacob.

At the Widow Tulley’s Jacob was talking with the Widow Tulley.

Jacob asked, “How was she tonight?”

Abigail replied, “Well she ate the supper Vivian brought over that’s more than she’s done in a week you know. You want to go in and see her?”

Jacob insisted, “No, I’ll wait until I’ve finished my business.”

Jim went back to town with Jacob. Jacob was asking everyone he saw if they had seen Otto Reigert. Most people weren’t sure. One man said, “No, haven’t seen him, but I’d kindly hate to be Otto Reigert.”

Hitching his horse at the Jail Jacob saw Lyle and yelled, “Hay stable Boy! Have you seen Otto around?”

henry-stables.jpgLyle replied, “Yes sir, him and Twig have been hanging around the Saloon.”

Jacob looked to Jim and asked, think you could ride down and check it out for me James.”

James nodded his head and road off. Soon Jim was riding back down the street. Jacob asked as Jim hitched his horse, “Was he there?”

James smiled, “Otto asked me if anybody was looking for him. Then he laughed.”

Jacob demanded, “What’d you say then?”

Jim just kept smiling, “Nothing like you told me. I just walked on out.”

Jacob mumbled, “Yeah good.”

Jim went in the Jail and Jacob sat on the steps.

Jim asked, “What do you figure Jacob will do Albert?”

Albert replied, “I don’t know. Jacob’s so mild and quiet and all, but I got a feeling he’d be mighty mean once he got a right to.”

Then Jacob came in and requested, “I want to thank you Sheriff for all you and James and Doc done for Amara.”

Albert insisted, “I’m sorry Jacob.”

Jacob went on, “Now I wonder if you’d hold my gun for me?”

Albert asked, “What are you going to do.

Jacob revealed, “I’m going to look for Otto Reigert, and I’m going to Mark him good. Somebody’s going to get hurt, and that’s a fact Sheriff.”

Albert insisted, “Look Jacob, I won’t stand for a killing now. Amara’s well enough to travel. You could start for Fort Boise. We’d fix a bed and a wagon for you.”

Jacob insisted, “I’m going to start for Boise all right, but not until I’ve seen Otto Reigert. Well will you hold my gun?”

Albert agreed, “Till you come back for it.”

Jacob replied, “Thank you.”

Albert added, “Oh Jacob.”

Jacob replied, “Yeah.”

Albert went on, “James and I were just talking about going up to the Giddy Up for a drink. We thought maybe we might walk with you.”

Jacob assured, “The company will be fine, but it’s my deal.”

Albert replied, “Sure.”

Otto saw Jacob come in the door, “I heard tell you come back to town.

Jacob replied, “Just a little while ago.”

Otto went on, “Well if it ain’t little Indian lover, but I see the Sheriff came along so he wouldn’t get hurt.

Albert barked, “I’m just here to see that no shooting starts.”

Otto replied, “Yeah what’s on your mind?”

Jacob informed, “You see I left my gun at the Sheriff’s office, so after you drop yours on the floor. I’m going to make you bleed.

Otto laughed, “You plan to take me with your fists?”

Jacob insisted, “That’s right.”

Otto barked, “All right boys move back make a little room here, all righty. See I threw my gun down.”

Albert ordered, “James just so Otto’s friends don’t get too excited and maybe want to help him out move down to the end of the bar

Jim replied, “Yes sir Sheriff.”

Albert announced, “There’ll be no gun play here Otto what’s between you and Jacob you’ll settle yourself right in here.”

Jacob exclaimed, “That’s good enough for me Sheriff.”

Otto barked, “All right you dirty little Indian lover come and get it.

Jacob insisted, “Now I’m going to take you apart bit by bit.”

Jacob landed the first punch knocking Otto to the floor.

Otto looked at Jacob exclaiming, “I said lucky punch is all that was just lucky punch

Jacob insisted, “That it was, now get up Reigert”

Otto got to his feet pulling a knife he yelled, “You dirty little Indian lover. I’m going to Slit your throat.”

Albert barked, “Drop that knife Otto!”

Jacob insisted, “Never mind Sheriff. If he’s going to fight with a knife I’ll fix me one too.”

Then Jacob picked up a bottle from a table, and busted it on the edge of the table.

Jim saw a man put his hand on his gun and blinked behind him, and put his hand over his. The man was startled and jumped as Jim said, “Get your hand off it!”

Spinning around he declared, “Where the hell did you come from?”

Jacob Held up the broken bottle by the neck and hollered, “Now Reigert if you’re going to fight to cut I’m ready. Fight or drop it now and get out of here, because if I see you again before I leave I’m going to finish what I started.

Jim commented, “My gracious alive I ain’t seen anything like that since I left Waco.”

Albert laughed, “James you and me both know you’re not from Texas.”

Jim snickered, “You just think you know that.”

Albert looked at Jacob and insisted, “As soon as you got your breath back. I’d like to buy you that drink I owe you.”

Jacob replied, “Thank you Sheriff. I figure I could use it, because my wife and me’s got a long ride ahead of us.”

Not over yet.
Just for you Texican...

At night in bed Jim talked to Suzy. “I want you and Kathy to check out Otto. I need to know if he is pure Evil or does he have a Soul.”

Suzy replied, “Kathy and I already did that the day of the buck board accident. Kathy told me she saw the most pure Evil Demon she ever saw. I think he’s as strong as the Witch.”

Jim insisted, “Then I say we take him out the same way we did the Witch. We have Kathy now, and I think we're getting good at what we do.”

Suzy replied, “Just tell me when My Love.”

Then Suzy made a ball of pure Love and pushed it into him, and squeezed him tight.

The days went by and Albert Watched every day until Friday. It was at midafternoon when Otto came into town. He was crossing Main Street going to the Saloon. As soon as Albert saw he was in the middle of the street he called out, “Truck on!”

Then time stopped and he went to the Jail to get the truck. Jim came out to see why time stop and Albert yelled, “Otto's in the middle of the street. It’s time.”

Truck-Town.jpgJim blinked out and told Suzy then got Kathy. Jim blinked him and Kathy to the middle of the street. Albert was sitting on the hood of the Truck coming up Main Street, as the Bird flew over the truck. Suzy flew in and landed next to Jim and Kathy, as Albert stopped the truck behind them and jumped down. The Bird landed on top of the truck.

bird2.jpgAlbert grabbed the cable from the winch. The team was complete, as Rebecca went and stood in front of the Giddy Up Saloon.

Then a Vulture flew in and landed on Otto’s shoulder. He came to life and waved his hand. Then a Badger appeared next to him. Suzy threw a ball of bright flashing colored light at Otto. Then Otto held out the palm of his hand, and the fire ball exploded in the air raining down to the ground. Then Otto pointed to Suzy, and the Badger leaped and ran at her. Jim saw this as Albert called out, “Clutch pedal in Winch P.T.O. low, Clutch out.”

With the winch cable pulled up over his shoulder Albert pulled his gun. Suzy levitated in the air as Jim jumped on the Badger and blinked out. Jim and the Badger disappeared. Then Otto pointed his finger at Albert. A lightning bolt shot from Otto’s finger. Albert watched as the invisible shield around the truck bounced it right back at Otto. This kicked him back a little.

Pulling the cable up over his shoulder Albert leaned his body forward, and pulled with all he had to drag the cable. Jim blinked back as Kathy threw her hands in the air and a bright flash of light engulfed everything making them blind. Being the only one that could see Kathy pulled the cable from Albert and slipped the cable over Otto's head. Then she clapped her hands and the light faded away.

Albert saw the cable around Otto’s head and barked, “Clutch pedal in Winch P.T.O. Reverse High, Clutch out.” With that command the cable pulled tight and dragged Otto to the front of the truck. Then Kathy walked alongside Otto as he dragged on the ground. A black cloud in the shape of a hideous monster rose from him. Then it was sucked into the ground as Kathy exclaimed, “Back to hell with you Demon.”

When Otto’s head was agents the truck bumper Albert yelled, “Clutch pedal in.”

Kathy put her hand up palm facing Albert and he hit it saying, “That’s what happens to baby killers.”

Then Suzy threw a ball of bright flashing colored light in the air, and shot it with a lightning bolt. Thousands of little flashing stars rained down on them as Jim blinked everything in the stars out.
