Are you sure about that?
Y'know, I've been watching Diamond's vids on the Oppenhemer Ranch Youtube channel, and he's growing on me. I like all the vids posted here, but I have to say, Diamond cuts through a lot of chaff.

I just spent my late morning watching/listening to new podcasts from GSM Channel, Oppenheimer Ranch Project, Deep South Homestead, Suspicious Observers, Adapt 2030, and maybe most important of all, Ice Age Farmer. I'm not feeling real well and am not up to posting about them like I usually do, but thought I'd mention them for those who might care to go find them.

I'll probably do a couple of necessary chores now and then spend the rest of the day reading at the computer and dozing.

Unstoppable Solar Cycles - Full Video

Published on Aug 19, 2015

When Erik the Red first arrived in Greenland, the fertile green land was perfect for farming. But within a few centuries the thriving Viking settlements had been wiped out by global cooling. The Little Ice Age is one of many climactic eras that have been scientifically identified. Since about 1850 the earth has been in a warming period.

What is the role of carbon dioxide in warming? The best available records of temperature and atmospheric CO2 over the past 650,000 years indicate that the earth's temperature always rises first, followed by a rise in carbon dioxide. If a warmer earth leads to increased levels of CO2 - and not the other way around - can humans' use of fossil fuels be the cause of global warming? Shouldn't this critical question remain open to scientific inquiry?

I am not certain if this video has been posted here or not, worth watching

Ah, Martinhouse, I hope you get to feeling better after some rest. I'd guess you've been running around as much as possible, like so many of us have.

I'll try to check the regular podcasts a bit later, I'm about to go feed the livestock. Another one you may want to add is Homesteading Family, I think it's called...I've watched a few, and they're really, really good. One of the best was on 'water glassing' fresh eggs. I sure learned a lot!

Take care, and rest up.

Another Ice Age is Coming

February 26, 2020 by Robert

What about CO2? It is wise to remember Mark Twain’s observation, ‘It’s easier to fool the people than to convince them that they’ve been fooled.’‘

_______________

Another Ice Age is Coming

David John Haskell

Extinction Rebellion and shamefully, Ovid- like politicians, would have you believe we are on the brink of an apocryphal global warming! For those who might foolishly believe this climate change hogwash, do not despair, as we are not! Educated and knowledgeable folk are fully aware we live on a dynamic planet and that climate change is a natural occurring event.

Indeed, scientists of any repute will tell you climate change is real and has been occurring with natural-driven cold and warm cycles for as long as the planet has existed – from glacial to interglacial – the last major Ice Age ending about 11,500 years ago. We are now in the Holocene epoch and there should be little surprise the Earth has been warming through natural causes since the last Little Ice Age ended around 1870 – with actual temperature increases far less than predicted by theoretical climate models.

There is no real evidence anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are a major or dangerous warming influence. On the contrary, CO2 emissions offer great benefits to agriculture, forestry and photosynthesis that is the basis of life on our planet. So do not be seduced by the false prophets of doom, without CO2 we will all perish, and that is fact. Tulip growers do not pump CO2 in their greenhouses to kill plants, but to enhance growth.

Interglacial’s last between 11,000 and 15,000 years, thus we are in the countdown to the next Ice Age – it could actually be starting now, or in 4,000 years time – nobody knows – but come, it will, as sure as the Earth orbits the Sun! Then there will a real challenge and we will be very thankful for fossil fuels and any additional CO2 to the atmosphere.

So when a gullible 16 year old skips school to lecture and hector you about CO2 emissions and preach false science, tell them to go back to school, to pay attention, to learn their lessons (truth) and thus realise the ‘real’ threat to Homo sapiens is that of over-population, to look in the mirror and acknowledge (although no fault of their own) they are part of the problem!

They will also learn our current geological period (Quaternary) has the lowest average CO2 levels in the history of the Earth. They will learn the atmospheric composition of CO2 is just 0.04 per cent and is ideal for life. They will learn the contribution of ‘greenhouse gases’ to atmospheric warming consists of 90 per cent water vapour, 6 per cent CO2, 2 per cent methane with others at 2 per cent. So why is there no discussion relating to the major component, that of water vapour? They will learn that CO2 is correctly written as CO2.

We are being misled by truly ignorant and shameless people. It is wise to remember Mark Twain’s observation, ‘It’s easier to fool the people than to convince them that they’ve been fooled.’

Though today's missive is a bit 'off topic', I think often of Martinhouse & TxGal and the many challenges they share on this thread. With them in mind, I ruminated on my own situations and felt some optimism was in order...

With all the stress emanating out of the fear of covid-19, production shortages affecting the economy, and the grand solar minimum, I have found extreme peace and escape in my prepping endeavors. The need to focus upon ensuring the three basic necessities (food, water, shelter) has occupied my time and energy. Achievements in these areas brings great contentment as the rest of the world is freaking out.

Apparently God directed me last year to increase our grazing areas and provided several assurances that His hand was at work in the matter. It would really be too complicated to explain the intricacies of all of them since I don’t understand why they happened to my benefit. None the less, we were blessed with nothing but doelings born to our herd last year, an inexpensive source of bull calves, abundant crop harvest, total recovery of my dog’s health after suffering Degenerative Myelopathy (Thanks for direction from Vessie), a brand new knee and good heart health for yours truly as well as DW. It goes on and on, but it seems that the best solution for us, as society collapses into chaos, is to put our hands to work towards providing our families basic needs.

Stay focused on those things you do have control over and thank our Creator for every one of them! :ld:

Yes, we have no bananas: Canary Islands banana plantations heavily damaged by windstorm

Fresh Plaza
Thu, 27 Feb 2020 12:49 UTC

The windstorm of February 22 and 23 has caused severe damage to banana plantations in the islands of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, Gran Canaria and, to a lesser extent, El Hierro.

It is estimated that about 8,000 plots have been affected by this storm. The north of Tenerife, especially the plantations located in Puerto de la Cruz, is among the most affected areas, with up to 80% of the plants on the ground, and severe damages to those that are still standing. The municipalities of Guía de Isora and Adeje have also been affected by this storm. In this area, where around 90% of this season's fruit had already been harvested, the prospect is that the consequences of the damage will actually be felt in the next season.

The island of La Palma has also suffered the consequences of the wind, with places like Tijarafe and Los Llanos recording great damages. In Las Breñas there are also plenty of plants on the ground and considerable defoliation.

The plantations in the municipalities of Guía and Gáldar, in Gran Canaria, as well as Valle Gran Rey, in La Gomera, have also recorded severe damages. In the case of El Hierro, the most severe problems have been reported in some facilities in Frontera.

All banana farms in the Canary Islands have insurance protecting both production and facilities against all climatic risks. ASPROCAN recommends reporting the damages to the insurers within seven days after the incident, as well as leaving the plot untouched until the visit from an expert, as long as this does not have an impact on the irrigation system or treatments are required.

Stone Tools Show Humans in India Survived a Massive Volcanic Eruption 74,000 Years Ago

February 28, 2020 by Robert

The Toba supervolcanic eruption about 74,000 years ago was one of the most colossal eruptions in the past 2 million years.

The massive eruption at the site of present-day Lake Toba in Sumatra, Indonesia spewed an estimated 1,000 times as much rock as the 1980 eruption of Mt St Helens and, many believe, triggered a decade-long “volcanic winter” and a millenia-long glacial period.

This so-called Toba catastrophe theory left the global human population with just a few thousand survivors.

However, an ancient stone tool industry uncovered at Dhaba in northern India suggests that humans have continuously occupied the Middle Son Valley for roughly 80,000 years, both before and after the Toba eruption.

“Populations at Dhaba were using stone tools that were similar to the toolkits being used by Homo sapiens in Africa at the same time,” explains archaeologist Chris Clarkson from the University of Queensland.

“The fact that these toolkits did not disappear at the time of the Toba super-eruption or change dramatically soon after indicates that human populations survived the so-called catastrophe.”

At about the same time as the Toba eruption, our species was also going through a genetic bottleneck, an unmistakable drop in human genetic diversity, and the eruption seemed like a plausible cause for this drop in diversity.

But the authors say the thousands of stone tools found in Dhaba suggest that humans migrated out of Africa and expanded across Eurasia much earlier than expected, and that the Toba eruption did not, I repeat, did not, lead to extreme cooling, nor trigger a glacial period.

The study by Clarkson et al. was published in 2019 in Nature Communications. ( https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-14668-4 )

For the time being, I think I’ll stick with the millenia-long glacial idea. According to Wikipedia, geologist Michael R. Rampino and volcanologist Stephen Self think the eruption caused a “brief, dramatic cooling or ‘volcanic winter'”, which resulted in a drop of the global mean surface temperature by 3–5 °C. Evidence from Greenland ice cores indicates a 1,000-year period of low δ18O and increased dust deposition immediately following the eruption. The eruption may have caused this 1,000-year period of cooler temperatures (stadial), two centuries of which could be accounted for by the persistence of the Toba stratospheric loading.

There's no way to know for sure. I just bought half a ton of layer pellets (6 months worth, or longer if I free range in summer and/or supplement with home grown) and enough cornmeal to finish the steers we have at that stage. I have sufficient rodent proof storage that I figured it was worth doing. Of course, I was thinking at least in part of limiting our exposure to outsiders... once the feed is delivered today, they won't have to come in the driveway for a long time.

Of course, that doesn't address the meat chicks we'll be getting in mid-May... but I'll probably do the same when they come... I have a very good idea how much feed they take to finishing, so I usually order all the chick starter I'll need in the beginning, and then a second, top-off order of finisher st the end. This time, I'll order it all at once, and hope it works out.

Tomorrow will probably be the last time I go to town for anything but a quick monthly drive-thru at the bank and post office, so I hope to get enough feed for the chickens to last until at least next fall. By then I hope to have been able to grow things to augment their feed and will have had the entire summer to get them used to eating a lot more of things other than dry feed.

Some of the whole corn I bought last fall got moldy real fast. It must have been some of the crop that didn't get dried well enough around the time of all the flooding in the Midwest. So now I periodically check the containers that have my supply of feed stored in them.

Brazil Suffers [More] Record Breaking and “Extremely Rare” Summer Cold

March 2, 2020 Cap Allon

The city of São Joaquim, in Serra Catarinense, has just busted the record for the number of summer frosts. Last week’s chill was the fourth frost of summer 2020, according to saojoaquimonline.com.

The record was registered at Vale do Caminhos da Neve, located 3km from the center of São Joaquim. According to the Keizer Station Network, the minimum temperature in the municipality dipped to 2C (35.6F), with the lowest temp in the state being the 0.9C (33.6F) at Urupema.

Minimum temperature map.

This was the second blast of severe cold to hit Brazil in the month of February, a phenomenon considered extremely rare by local meteorologist.

February in Florianópolis averaged out as the second coldest on record, coming close to the top spot–the 13.7C (56.7F) set back in 1987 (solar minimum of cycle 21).

The lower latitudes are refreezing in line with historically low solar activity, cloud-nucleating Cosmic Rays, and a meridional jet stream flow.

Thanks Marsey, fortunately I use either Nutrena or Green Mountain Feeds for the poultry, Blue Seal (Kent) feeds for the 4 legged livestock. As for storing it in a rodent free environment, it will be a shade over a ton of feed and I have a grain shed but am worried about mold. Powerful Eruption at Merapi Volcano, Indonesia — Ash Fired to 35,000 feet (10.7 km)

March 4, 2020 Cap Allon

A high-level stratospheric eruption was recorded at Merapi Volcano, central Java, Indonesia on March 03, 2020.

A thick column of volcanic ash has been fired to an altitude of 35,000 ft (10.7 km) above sea level, according to data released by the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC).

As a result, the Aviation Color Code was raised from Orange to Red at 22:50 UTC; and Adi Soemarmo International Airport in Surakarta has been closed following the eruption.

Particulates ejected to altitudes above 32,800 feet (10 km) –and into the stratosphere– often linger, where they have a direct cooling effect on the planet.

The previous major eruption of this volcano took place in 2010, claiming the lives of 353 people — that eruptive period lasted from October 26, 2010 to July 15, 2012; and was classed as VEI 4.

BACKGROUND
Stratovolcano: 2968 m / 9737 ft
Central Java, Indonesia: -7.54°S / 110.44°E
Current status: ERUPTING (4 out of 5)

Merapi is a highly explosive stratovolcano — a large Plinian eruption takes place every few 1000 of years (the last ones at about 1000 BP and 2000 BP), sometimes with associated flank collapse.

The volcano, one of Indonesia’s most active, lies in one of the world’s most densely populated areas and dominates the landscape immediately north of the major city of Yogyakarta. It is the youngest and southernmost of a volcanic chain extending NNW to Ungaran volcano. Growth of Old Merapi during the Pleistocene ended with major edifice collapse perhaps about 2000 years ago, leaving a large arcuate scarp cutting the eroded older Batulawang volcano. Subsequently growth of the steep-sided Young Merapi edifice, its upper part unvegetated due to frequent eruptive activity, began SW of the earlier collapse scarp. Pyroclastic flows and lahars accompanying growth and collapse of the steep-sided active summit lava dome have devastated cultivated lands on the western-to-southern flanks and caused many fatalities during historical time.

Ghost Flights, N.Z Drought and U.S Rationing (945)

Run time is 7:26

Flights taking off empty to keep the slot rotation in too 200 busiest airports globally termed "ghost flights". New Zealand summer snow and worst drought "ever". Moon halo in Canada and limits on purchases in stores across the US mean reduced donations to Salvation Army.

Still not a whole lot out there on the GSM/crops for 2020. Still too soon for much, I guess. I did get to wondering this morning though, since so much news is Coronavirus related (understandably so) - what happens when/if farmers start to catch it?

I would think it wouldn't take too many ill farmers to bring down spring planting season, since the window for planting is somewhat short.

Retrain the Public to Eat Old Food in Solar Cycle 25 (946)

Run time is 8:36

We have been taught for decades about "Good by Dates" etc.... to throw away the food if its even one day past the "Best By" date, now the full 180 of wilted veggies are ok and eat leftovers even if old. I wonder if its anything to do with the intensifying Grand Solar Minimum and this years crops not being planted in Asia and wet again in the USA. Third year of above average snow fall across the N. Hemisphere and more visible atmospheric changes.
