well we had the Care Bear neutered today. he's 4 and it was time. actually PAST time. I'm gonna go get him in a bit - gonna have to give him the bad news. we also had a gastropexy done on him while he was under. he lives to chase his deer friends all over the mountain and bloat is a real potential problem for a Dobie/Rott mix . . . with that long legged, narrow waisted, deep chest build of his. its a really bad way to go and we're not having any of that if we can help it at all. and you CAN NOT make him understand that he shouldn't chase deer - that's its dangerous. he thinks its the greatest thing goin' an just soooooo much better than them groundhogs in the front pasture fer sure . . .

when we rescued him he'd just turned 3. we'd have done it then but he had a flaming UTI and was peeing blood. then the poor guy - only at his new fur-ever home 4 days - and a danged ol widda-maker fell out of a big ol poplar and struck him a glancing blow to the right side of his face. nearly lost his right eye over it . . . but he's healed up 100% thanks to good care and GODS love and grace. if he'd have been standing a few inches to the NNW of where he was, it would have killed him. danged thing weighed 12 lbs and was 29" long.

he's hidden from the snips as long as he was able. then his new sister Gracie came along - and well - you know - he just had to get cut. he'll get over it - but I hate to be the one to have to tell him about it all.

That is one pretty couple there. I see they're on your bed; so where do you sleep at night :) Give them treats and hugs from us!

TBear has an arrangement with us. He can sleep on the bed and he sleeps between us. He promises not to want puppy play at midnight,, and not to squeak his toys he sleeps with after 10 pm
:)

I slept in a Double (some call them Full) sized bed for thirteen years with five Catahoulas and a Black Lab. We managed just fine. The dreaming burbley sounds they made and the running paws and Dottie snoring like a buzz saw were an integral part of my life.

I am having a really hard time without paws and fur. Chance's previous owner apparently didn't allow pups on furniture or bedding and I never could get him to relax enough to enjoy it. Lali spent a couple of afternoon naps in bed with me and then stopped. It's lonely.

Enjoy your lovely couple and I wish you many safe happy years. Give them a belly rub from me.

I'm on the floor with at least two every night. Space isn't a problem, but they steal my pillow and blankets.

Miss Belle was a card carrying cover thief. She had the same coloring as Cupcake, the Catahoula on Swamp People who would go Gator hunting and reward for getting one was a cupcake. Eaten on the bow of the boat.

Miss Belle got what we used to call the No Belle Prize if she did something she wasn't supposed to do. How many times I'd wake up and be nose to nose with my girl and her amber eyes shining in the moonlight. I could almost see her grin. My neck would be all out of whack and her head would be on my pillow. Her warm breath on my cheek.

No Belle! And she had more of those darn things than Obama.

On TB every waking moment
Ever since a cat incident put a claw hole in my former hubby's leg vein, I have not allowed pets on the bed. For years, Joey, (sheep dog.) would sleep in his bed across the threshold of my bedroom with a closed door. When I moved, I put his bed next to mine on the floor. He always went to bed when I did. (He passed in 2020 at age 15.)

I am too old to responsibly get another dog, but I have 2 cats.

he sleeps on the bed next to Raggedyann until I come in. that's her boy - all 106 lbs of him. typically he has his head on her shoulder and under a pillow or the blanket. I come in and tell him he's gotta go get on his nahnie bed . . . he'll grumble a little then stretch for a few weeks - then he'll slide out of bed and over to his place.

the other day he took a squeaky teddy bear from Gracie and went and layed under the kitchen table with it under his snout. Raggedyann looked at him and said very calmly - "Bear that's Gracies - you need to give it back to her". In typical Care Bear fashion, he got up and carried the toy back over and gave it to Gracie . . . such a good boy. he really is an amazing dog.

I damn sure wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of him

He will forgive you. But will Gracie?

right now he's not too happy about anything . . . the injectable pain meds they gave him are wearing off. . . he's been given 300mg GABAPENTIN, 400mg TRAZADONE and 100mg CARPROPHEN per the vets orders . . . we'll see how he does thru the night. we'll have to face the music in the morning . . . I'm sure he'll realize they're missing before too long and dad will have sum 'splanin' ta do . . .

Hairy will burrow under the blankets until he reaches the small of my back. Then he flips those blankets off of me and curls up in that spot. And I have no blankets.

This sounds hauntingly familiar. That was Dottie's method. And she'd roll over, look straight at me and smile with her tongue lolled out in a huge puppy grin. My girl knew what she did. I guess I kinda reinforced it over the years with all those belly rubs.

well he's up and about but not too happily . . . doesn't seem to be in pain mind ya . . . but when I tell you that he keeps looking "BACK THERE" and then up at me - and that characteristic "circle wag at warp 9" - that his little dobbie stub tail typically makes AIN'T THERE - I get the distinct feeling he's sayin' . . .

dude - REALLY!???! - so just what did I do to deserve THIS!???!

Your babies are beautiful! We've had Rotties in the past, and they are a wonderful, smart breed!

What sweet babies! When DS & I rescued youngest DD a couple of years ago, she brought with her Piccolo, my sweet GS. He's a lab/Char Pei mix. DS had an un-spayed female, so DD got Pic neutered. He was about a year and a half old. He doesn't seem to have ever missed having his boys. However, and I did not know this until I was that many years old, but while a neutered male is incapable of producing offspring, he is still fully capable of trying to produce offspring. I was very shocked when I discovered this cuz they were always getting hung up when she would go into heat. All that to say, you might think about getting Gracie spayed if you don't want the "excitement."

Because of Budreaux's bloodline, and the fact that his award winning Papa had died a few months before- DH and I agonized over getting him cut. He was, shall we say, a high speed low drag kind of Catahoula. Hyper and almost agressive. In the hunting world, he would be a kill dog, not a trail dog. We decided not to hunt him and he was going to be a house pup most of the time.

Within a week after surgery, he still had that Spark that all Houlas do, but he was mellow. Things that used to get him agitated, no longer did and we were able to walk him normally without him dragging us across the next State line.

The evening we brought him home from the Vet, my Brother stopped by unexpectedly with something balanced on one shoulder. An Elk shoulder. That thing made losing his jewels almost bearable. Almost.

oh my - better not tell Raggedyann about that, its something I hadn't realized . . . makes me even more sad we did this.

truth told the Care Bear (I'm the one who added "Care" to his name - he came to us as "Bear") is the SWEETEST thing you've ever met. I swear the dog is an empath. when I lost my mom and dad he could feel the sorrow. he came in and put his head on my knee and looked up into my eyes. then he licked my face. I've seen him stand up on his hind legs - look Raggedyann in the eyes and literally hug her when she returns from being gone or when she's upset about something. he is absolutely the best dog we've ever had bar none.

we actually thought about breeding him to Gracie - but decided against it becasue we are unsure of his breeding from the standpoint of hips heart eyes etc. Gracie has all those certs. we did not want to have a litter of puppies - which would have been beautiful babies - but potentially unhealthy. then there is the fact that I'd be in my early mid 70's and Raggedyann would be in her late 60's with a litter of pups to worry about.

we do plan to get Gracie spayed but not until she's about 2 YO

Getting Pic clipped did absolutely NOTHING for his, shall we say, joi de vivre for life. That dog didn't calm down ONE BIT. I truly love the big guy, but I could cheerfully strangle him sometimes.

Even though he's DD's dog, I am the alpha. I'm much better at making him mind than she is. One night we were watching a movie that had a sad part and I started crying. Yeah...for all my tough talk, I'm a sap. Not boo-hoo or anything, just silent tears. Pic DID NOT LIKE IT. Not one bit. He had the same reaction my children do...OMG, please tell me how to make you not be cry.

If I hum, or god forbid whistle, Hairy is on me like white on rice. Literally trying to climb on my head. Dog is weird. And I don’t generally hum or whistle off-key, so stuff it….

That is hilarious! From earliest puppyhood, each of mine have been sung to. Each has their Song with their name in it. Being Catahoulas, they'd usually sing along with me. There are Treat Songs and Rain Songs, and Morning Songs. The one for making meat (The Bone Song) is a perenial favorite.
When they go for the Last Ride, I sing them across the Bridge.
