Sigh, please don't assign any legitimacy to that term by using it.
An inanimate object is not capable of violence. Nor it is capable of any other human trait. It is an object. A tool. It does the bidding of the human whos hand wields it - usually. Sometimes due to a failure to maintain it or feed it a proper diet it may only yield a disheartening "click" when needed.

They track the times their blurbs are repeated across the internet to show that it is a common issue across the country, and this only encourages them to find a solution for "it".
