ECON The average price of regular gas has climbed to $4.55 per gallon - 5/20/2026

Just found out the price of heating oil is 6.19 a gallon. And kerosene is almost $7.00
The county adds its own 4% tax on top of whatever the total is.
The county better buy some body bags with the money.

Read this post, once you are done read it a second time just in case, because this is the EXACT reason why it’s very dangerous to manipulate markets, especially when you do it for too long and they become too disconnected from the real world
I know of some of the markets that you discuss.
Yes, always ends up in tears. Or jubilation, depending on your position.

In my neighborhood of SC Wisconsin I have three Kwik Trips and one Mobil all within four miles. The Kwik Trips were all $4.39 and Mobil in the other one station village was $4.29, all were up 40¢ today from yesterday and yesterday I wasn't able to top off the tanks so had to do it today. Went to Mobil and with our Walmart+ discount saved 20¢ on 43 gallons compared to the always packed Kwik Trips, 20¢ isn't a whole lot to save but every bit is a good thing. Mobil in that town is always 10¢ cheaper than the Kwik Trips in the other town.

Saw a newsfeed headline saying diesel was $9.999 at some stations in California, and that at least some pumps in the state have no ability to price gallons in the $10s. I wonder how many gas pumps around the country are in the same boat? It's not like inflation is likely to go in reverse anytime soon, after all (if inflation does go in reverse, no one is going to like what life is like).

DH decided to fill his truck (diesel) first thing this morning and get the oil changed, it was overdue, as well. He paid $6.49 a gallon for diesel. The oil change was $126, less than what he spent on filling up with diesel he says. I am thinking getting tires for the car might be prudent too. We bought it new in 2019, still the original tires.

Saw this a bit ago, gas prices adjusted for inflation....

The national average under Obama hit $3.95 ($5.95 in today's dollars)

The national average under Biden hit $5.01 ($5.65 in today's dollars)

Trump is sitting at $4.32 and most of that is because of how insanely high California and New York are.

Average price for regular gas is $4.85 in Idaho now. It would be nice if the state suspended the tax on it, but they won't.

Today, In the town that is the county seat, 15 miles away from my place, gas (10% ethanol) was $3.85/ gallon or $3.89/gallon, depending on the station. I got filled up at $3.89 because the two stations at $3.85 were packed and I didn't want to wait. It was still 10¢ cheaper than little town 5 miles away, there 10% ethanol is $3.99/ gallon.
