I was wrong; it is actually about 8.76 per gallon (in US Dollars). There's a cool conversion chart here:
This was diesel; I can check regular gasoline later
Petrol (aka gasoline) was 10 dollars a gallon during the last economic/oil crisis, I think around 2008 (but I could be wrong).
I am pretty sure I did a post here on how to live with $10-a-gallon gasoline, and our driving distances here in rural Ireland are almost identical to what we had to drive when I was a teenager in rural California. In both cases about seven to twelve miles to get to most shopping places or a preferred gas station.
Los Osos, California, to either San Luis Obispo or Morro Bay, and from Shinrone, Ireland, to some parts of Roscrea, Birr, or Nenagh.
Basically, try to do all your shopping in one trip (we tend to do that anyway) and make as few trips as possible. Sometimes combine things like medical appointments with shopping.
When I wrote the original post, we had NO public transport here in rural Ireland (and there was none in Los Osos when I was growing up on the Central Coast either; I don't count the school bus - I rode that 45 minutes each way from Los Osos to Morro Bay).
Interestingly enough, both in Los Osos and here in Shinrone, my home was and is almost exactly two miles from the tiny village center with the shops. Though I no longer find it amusing to ride my horse to the village at almost 70, as I did when I was about 12.
We do have some public transit here now (and they probably have some in Los Osos, I don't know), but my housemate still has to drive me to a bus stop because I can't walk the two miles. However, because I'm legally disabled, I get a free travel pass during non-peak hours, so it is still a good cost savings if I have a doctor's appointment or something.
