Sweet Potato Talk

Just thought I'd throw in something in on the subject.

I have some growing under shade cloth in a raised bed but the their vine and leaves are on top of the shade cloth and chicken house. Well I dug up some, and they are huge.

They have done well with only rainwater. However there has been a lot of that.

Also I have been using some of the vines to feed my chickens.

Anyway from what I can see growing vines up on a trellis etc can produce good results.

Can you plant sweet potatoes without using the slips? Just plant one whole like a russet potato? Thanks expert gardeners! :)

Sweet potatoes must be grown from slips so the literature says. Cardinal I am right now growing slips. But it is my first attempt. I have put small sweet potatoes in foil pans half filled with dirt and I spray them every day with water to keep them damp. They are sprouting! The pic is from Oct 2020.IMG_3968003.jpg

Sweet potatoes grow from something called “slips”. Those are the green vines that grow out of a sweet potato when it sprouts. They're taken off and planted in the ground to create a new sweet potato plant. A single sprouting sweet potato can provide you with at least 15 slips (that's a low estimate).17 Mar 2021

No. Just NO! Use the slips! Sweets are not the same plant family as white/Irish potatoes. My experience was the sweet potato tuber either rotted or just got bigger without producing more tubers. It only produced some vines.

CC are all sweet potato greens edible? I know some are.

I just harvest mine each year and leave them sitting in my garage. The harvested potatoes just start growing shoots off the end while sitting in the garage. When we’re ready to eat one I just cut off the tip with the shoots attached and stick it in the ground and it grows. Been doing this for a few years. Caveat...I live in a prime sweet potato growing climate.

MARANTHA!! Even so, come LORD JESUS!!!
Well, I can grow the slips real well>>>>I have already this year three times.

It is just that every time they get half-way big enough to set out, MY DOG EATS THEM!!

This last time, she ate the WHOLE sweet tater too!! :shk:

I guess I will have to order some>>>>those suckers are EXPENSIVE!!

That is funny IOUJC! The ducks ate down one of my most beloved hostas...what I get for planting around the pond. But nothing like eating what was to be food for you!
