Strong earthquake shakes Osaka

Just before 8 am local time a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck northern Osaka. It's categorized as a six-minus on a scale of zero to seven on Japan's seismic intensity scale.

No tsunami warning has been issued.

Hyogo, Kyoto, Shiga, Nara are also affected.

At least 5 people were injured and have been transferred to hospital.

Officials in neighboring Fukui Prefecture say all 15 nuclear reactors are still functioning.

Shinkansen bullet train service has been halted.
Local train services in the region have also been affected.

The 3 airports in the region temporarily halted operations but have just resumed.

Some areas in Osaka are reportedly experiencing power shortages.

A viewer has posted a photo showing water gushing out from a cracked pipe along the Yodo River in Osaka Prefecture in the city of Takatsuki.

He said the water is still flowing out from the pipe.

Senior government officials are gathering for an emergency meeting at the Prime Minister's office.

Japanese Self-Defense Force fighter jets and helicopters are heading to the area to gather information.

I didn't report it earlier because it had been listed as a 5+. 5.9 by Japan and USGS had it as a 5.3.

Then I started seeing reports of deaths a few minutes ago, but thought it must have been fake news, so I ignored it. (ETA: especially since reports two hours after fact said no damage reported)

I didn't think much either until reports said it was a shallow quake.

That can make a big difference, especially in a highly urbanized area.

Around 55 altogether. None are real close to Osaka.

At least 3 dead in Osaka quake

At least 2 elderly men and a little girl are dead in Osaka from a magnitude 6.1 earthquake.

Authorities are still getting to grips with the extent of injuries, but they say at least 61 people have been hurt across multiple prefectures in western Japan.

The 9-year-old girl and one of the elderly men were hit by falling walls in different areas. A bookshelf killed the other man. Many of the injured have been taken to hospital.

Firefighters are trying to put out a house fire in northern Osaka.

Cracked pipes are spilling water onto some roads.

And at least fourteen cases of people trapped inside elevators have been reported.

Dozens have fled to evacuation centers set up across Osaka. 100,000 homes are without gas. But power has been restored for 170,000 that had lost it.

Some public schools have been closed with parents asked to pick their children.

Shinkansen bullet train service has been halted and local trains have also been affected, stranding thousands of passengers. Officials are now trying to rescue passengers from trains stuck between stations.

Two airports in the region temporarily suspended flights, but have since resumed operations.

Officials in neighboring Fukui Prefecture say they've checked all the 15 nuclear reactors there, both online and offline, and no problems have been found.

Strong quake near Osaka, Japan, kills 3, knocks over walls

TOKYO — A strong earthquake knocked over walls and set off scattered fires around metropolitan Osaka in western Japan on Monday, killing at least three people and injuring more than 210.

A 9-year-old girl was killed by a falling concrete wall at her school, and the two other fatalities were men in their 80s.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said 214 people were treated for injuries at hospitals. Most of the injured were in Osaka — Japan's No. 2 city bustling with businesses. Osaka officials did not give details, but the injuries reported in Kyoto and three other neighboring prefectures were all minor.

The Osaka prefectural government's disaster management department confirmed the girl's death and the death of an older man. The third victim died in the nearby city of Ibaraki.

A falling concrete wall knocked down Rina Miyake as she walked by at her elementary school in Takatsuki. NHK public television aired footage showing the collapsed upper half of the high wall, which was cheerfully painted with trees, flowers and blue sky and surrounded the school swimming pool.

Takatsuki Mayor Takeshi Hamada apologized over her death because of the wall's collapse. The structure was old and made of concrete blocks — a known risk in earthquakes.

A man in his 80s died in the collapse of a concrete wall in Osaka city. An 84-year-old man in nearby Ibaraki died after a bookshelf fell on top of him at home, according to city officials. Many homes and buildings, including a major hospital, were temporarily without power, though electricity was restored at most places by midafternoon.

The magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck shortly after 8 a.m. north of Osaka at a depth of about 13 kilometers (8 miles), the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The strongest shaking was north of Osaka, but the quake rattled large parts of western Japan, including Kyoto, the agency said.

The quake knocked over walls, broke windows and set off scattered building fires. It toppled book shelves in homes and scattered goods on shop floors. It also cracked roads and broke water pipes, leaving homes without water.

The morning commute was disrupted, as dozens of domestic flights in and out of Osaka were grounded, while train and subway service in the Osaka area including the bullet train were suspended to check for damage. Passengers were seen exiting trains on the tracks between stations. Some subway services started to resume in the afternoon.

The earthquake reminded many in Japan of the magnitude 7.3 Hanshin-Kobe quake in 1995 that killed more than 6,000 in the region. Monday's quake also followed a series of smaller quakes near Tokyo in recent weeks.

A 30-year-old lawyer Jun Kawasaki said the quake reminded him of the Kobe quake 23 years ago, and started packing up immediately to run away.

"It was not as bad as the Kobe quake," he told the Associated Press from Osaka. His girlfriend ducked down under the table. Elevators in his office building were out of operation. "I used the stairs but I was out of breath by the time I arrived at my office on the 20th floor."

Two elderly men and a young girl were killed, with several other people also in "cardiopulmonary arrest", after walls collapsed in a magnitude-6.1 earthquake that hit Osaka in western Japan on Monday, public broadcaster NHK said.

Japan does not confirm deaths until a formal examination has been made and generally uses the term cardiopulmonary arrest in such cases.

NHK said an 80-year-old man and a 9-year-old girl had been killed by collapsing walls.

Live footage showed burst water mains and a house on fire after the quake hit Japan's second-biggest metropolis just before 8 a.m. (2300 GMT Sunday) as commuters were heading to work.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the government was assessing damage and that its top priority was the safety of residents.

The epicentre of the earthquake was in the northern part of the prefecture, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The agency originally put the quake's magnitude at 5.9 but later raised it to 6.1. No tsunami warning was issued.

Kansai Electric Power said no irregularities had been detected at the Mihama, Takahama and Ohi nuclear plants after the quake.

Kansai also said more than 170,000 households were without power in Osaka and neighbouring Hyogo prefecture.

Daihatsu Motor Co, an Osaka-based unit of Toyota Motor Corp , said it had suspended production at its factories in Osaka and Kyoto while they check for damage.

Sharp Corp said its directly owned plants in the area were operating as usual, but a joint venture plant with parent Hon Hai Precision Industry said it had halted operations for safety checks.

"We were sleeping and it woke us up abruptly," said Kate Kilpatrick, 19, who was staying in a hotel in Osaka when the quake hit.

"It was so terrifying because this is my first earthquake. I thought it was a nightmare because I was so confused. The whole world was aggressively shaking," she said.

Kilpatrick, visiting Japan for the first time from the United States, said alarms went off almost immediately in the hotel and a loudspeaker told guests to stay away from windows.

Osaka is to host next year's Group of 20 summit.

A massive magnitude 9.0 quake hit northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011, triggering a huge tsunami that killed some 18,000 people and triggered the world's worst nuclear disaster in a quarter of a century at Tokyo Electric Power's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Japan quake: Strong tremor shakes Osaka, killing at least 3

By Junko Ogura and Susannah Cullinane
Updated 5:33 AM ET, Mon June 18, 2018

Tokyo (CNN)A strong earthquake hit the Japanese city of Osaka during morning rush hour Monday, killing at least three people and injuring 214, Japan's government says.

The 5.3 magnitude quake shook Osaka, on Japan's main Honshu Island, around 8 a.m. Monday local time (7 p.m. Sunday ET) according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The Japan Meteorology Agency put the magnitude at 5.9. It rated the quake at "6 Lower" on its JMA Seismic Intensity scale, meaning the shaking would have been severe enough to make it difficult to remain standing.

A nine-year-old girl was killed after becoming trapped by a damaged wall in a swimming pool facility at her school in Takatsuki city, north of Osaka city.

Two elderly men also died, including an 85-year-old man trapped by a damaged block wall in Yodogawa-ku, and an 80-year-old man who was crushed by a falling bookshelf at his home in Ibaraki.

At least 214 people were hurt, according to Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga.

The injured were located across a number of prefectures in the south of Honshu island, local officials said.

Several roads suffered severe damage and water pipes burst, sending water flowing onto streets in Takatsuki city where the biggest shock was felt.

Nearly 700 people were in evacuation centers, local broadcaster NHK said.

Several train services remained suspended across Osaka Prefecture on Monday afternoon, causing major travel delays, although bullet trains resumed service about six hours after the quake.

Kansai Airports, the company which operates the airport in Osaka, says 82 flights departing and arriving there have been canceled throughout the day due to the quake. There's no damage at the airport.

According to Osaka prefectural office, homes in northern Osaka are without water and the supply of gas has been cut to 108,000 households.

Some 170,000 homes suffered temporary power outages, which were resolved within hours after the quake, according to Kansai Electric co.

Guatemala quake
Meantime, on the other side of the Pacific, a 5.6 magnitude quake struck near Guanagazapa in Guatemala's Escuintla province just after 8:30 p.m. local time (10:30 p.m ET) Sunday, according to the USGS.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage, according to CONRED, the government agency for disaster reduction.

Both Japan and Guatemala are situated on the Ring of Fire, an area of intense seismic and volcanic activity on both sides of the Pacific Ocean.

The 40,000-kilometer (25,000-mile) area stretches from the boundary of the Pacific Plate and the smaller plates such as the Philippine Sea plate to the Cocos and Nazca Plates that line the edge of the Pacific Ocean in a horseshoe shape.

Correction: This story has been updated with the correct number the quake measured on the JMA Seismic Intensity scale.

CNN's Junko Ogura reported from Tokyo and Susannah Cullinane wrote from Auckland, New Zealand. CNN'S Flora Charner in Atlanta and CNNE's Daniel Silva Fernandez in Miami also contributed to this report.
