Believe it or not that IS actually a thing.

I think it is called "The Strong Cities Initiative".

Several cities signed up for it. Think Chicago was one of them.

Blue helmets against gang bangers, should be interesting.

There was a lot of backlash across the country at the time, so no one has called for them........yet.
This might be a first. Rednecks, country folk, and gangbangers, some of which have some experience in the US military, having to deal with a common, call it a foe.
This, could have a silver lining yet.

North Avenue Beach closed after shots fired on lakefront

MAY 26, 2023 / 6:12 PM / CBS CHICAGO

CHICAGO (CBS) -- North Avenue Beach has been closed on Friday afternoon, after shots were fired just hours after the beach had opened to swimmers for the summer, sending visitors scrambling for cover.

CBS 2's Asal Rezaei was at North Avenue Beach, reporting on the opening of beaches along Chicago's lakefront for the Memorial Day weekend, when she and her photographer heard gunfire around 1:30 p.m., less than three hours after beaches were opened to swimmers for the summer season.

About 100 people were nearby at the time and started running away.

The windows of a Chicago Park District truck were shot out. No injuries were reported.

Officers had been at the beach all day, checking people's bags, and asked people to leave the beach around 1:45 p.m. as police conducted a search. Both the beach and the adjacent bike path were closed.

Officers could be seen questioning a group of about a dozen people, and several people were handcuffed as police searched a nearby stack of lounge chairs.

Police said a group of young men got into a fight on the beach when someone pulled out a gun and started shooting.

A group of DePaul University students who were enjoying their day off were sitting about 200 feet away at the time.

"We were really close, actually. We were having fun, and then all of a sudden these people started fighting, and the police came out, and then we heard a gunshot, and we just ran away to safety," Claire Nelson said.

The window of a Chicago Park District truck was shattered. There were no immediate reports of injuries, but several people were taken to the hospital to be treated for intoxication.

Interim CPD Supt. Fred Waller was asked about the incident later on Friday.

"The person who fired the weapon was observed," Waller said. "He was taken into custody after a very, very short foot pursuit. Another subject in the same area was also observed running away with a weapon and he was taken into custody. Two weapons were recovered from him."

It was not immediately clear when the beach would reopen.

The shooting came less than 24 hours after Mayor Brandon Johnson and other city leaders announced the city's Memorial Day weekend safety plan, which includes an increased police presence across the city, including the lakefront.

It was because of the police deployment at the beaches that officers were able to quickly respond to the shots fired at North Avenue Beach.

Along with police, violence interrupters will have a presence downtown this weekend. On Friday night, several spread out through Millennium Park and the loop, including Englewood First Responders.

"I just want to set an example for Black kids period," said Saunte Brown, of Englewood First Responders. "We all com from a struggle. I'm here. I'm young. It' doesn't matter your age."

Brown, 16 volunteered in hopes of getting through to her peers and prevent a chaotic scene like the one last month in the downtown area when groups of teens gathered. People were shot and other violence crimes committed.

Charles McKenzie, of the Englewood First Responders, said their goal is to make sure young people, "come down here and enjoy themselves peacefully, not tear anything up, not to hurt anybody. Hopefully they can come down here and have a good time."

3 hours after they opened. Did not make it till sunset opening day and shots fired. Beaches closed. Weekends ruined for families wanting to grill out etc.

It is so wearily predictable at this point, you could set your watch by these kids. And its not some new phenom either. The kids who were jumping on cop cars after the Bulls won their string of NBA championships in the 90s are the parents of the current riff raff. Its a rite of passage now, can you start a flashmob looting spree during Lollapalooza? Can you start a gangwar on the beach? A stampede at the bean at Millennium Park? These are standard gang initiation recruitment demands, like meeting high school resume requirement. The parents at this point know, as they themselves misbehaved as under 18's.

So the problem is the beach? And the resolution is to remove the beach?

Not the gunz?

Not the young men?

Of course this will only transfer the REAL issue back onto the streets.

Maybe the beach could be "entry by invitation?" Yunno - like a party? Or a nightclub.

"You don't look like the sort of people we want on our beach."

A BEACH PARTY. Annette Funicello might come. She could bring her mouse ears, if she hadn't died in 2013.

Hopefully for them "having a good time" doesn't mean getting thrills from shooting at live targets.

Welp, next bright idea?

CHICAGO -- At least 21 people have been shot, four fatally, in Chicago shootings so far this Memorial Day weekend.

A man was shot to death Saturday morning in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side. It happened about 11:15 a.m. in the 1100 block of North Ridgeway Avenue, according to Chicago police. The man, thought to be between 25-30, suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He died at a hospital. Area detectives were investigating.

Hours earlier, two people were shot, one fatally, in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood, police said. A 36-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man were standing on a sidewalk in the 2300 block of West 18th Street just before 3 a.m. when someone fired shots, according to Chicago police. They were taken to a nearby hospital, where the man was pronounced dead. The woman was listed in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the face. No arrests have been made and detectives are investigating.

Less than hour earlier, a 34-year-old man was fatally shot in Lakeview, according to police. The man was found on a sidewalk in the 500 block of West Surf Street around 2:15 a.m., police said. He suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No one is in custody and detectives are investigating.

At around 12:50 a.m., police say a man, 33, was found shot to death in Auburn Gresham. He was found on a sidewalk in the 7800 block of South Seeley Avenue according to police. He suffered a gunshot wound to the armpit and was pronounced dead on the scene. No one is in custody and detectives are investigating.

In non-fatal shootings, a 16-year-old girl was shot while standing on a sidewalk in East Garfield Park. It happened early Saturday morning around 1:11 a.m. in the 3000 blk. of W. Jackson. The teen was taken to Mt. Sinai in fair condition with a gunshot wound to her right side. There is no one in custody and Area Four detectives are investigating.

Another teen was shot in a Jeffrey Manor home after opening the front door Friday night, Chicago police said. The shooting happened just before 10:30 p.m. in the 9700 block of South Merrill Avenue, police said. The 17-year-old male victim was still inside the home when he was shot in the leg. He was taken to a hospital in good condition, police said. No other information was immediately available.

A Michigan police officer is in custody after a gun went off in a River North hotel room on Saturday afternoon, officials said. The off-duty officer, a 23-year-old man from the Grand Rapids area, was inside a hotel room with another man, 25, in 300 block of North Dearborn Street at about 3:10 p.m. Police said the younger man was handling a gun when it went off, striking himself and the older man. The off-duty officer, shot in the hand, was transported to Northwestern Hospital in fair condition. The other man, shot in the stomach, was taken to the same hospital in fair condition. The officer is in custody and charges are pending. Police found two guns on the scene, and Area Three detectives are investigating. So being this is still Saturday, it looks like the numbers for the weekend/holiday will be higher - considerably higher than a usual weekend.

So perhaps the "Peacekeepers" should be carrying "Peacemakers?" (Colt 45s) And know how to use them?

Isn't that what Uniformed Police Do?

I wonder who they will blame for the increased death toll.

Trump?

I will go ahead and give the political response now as to save time of having to read it next week. Our Ambassador program has been proven to be a great success. Although it was not as successful as hoped we can only imagine how much higher the number of shootings would have been if our ambassadors had not been fully engaged with the public. We are investigating the possibility of increased spending on this program due to it’s growing success pending applications for federal funding.

Um, these aren’t blue helmeted UN peacekeepers.

Read the thread.
Hey now, we don't do that kinda thing, not how we roll round here :D

Guessin I'm an outlier here (grabs shocked face) once again, but imho, "if" they decide it's election season and that they need the crime inferno to burn down to a dull roar in their ruins o' democratic run cities, they will indeed get folks to buy in and "buy the peace" same as unkie sam has done with all sorts o' warring tribes all 'cross the globe.

Not clear if they're using dewey eyed SJW out there at this point, or if they've gone to the serious guns of dragging out the "elder statesmen" and community members that interface with the bangers. The former are cannon fodder, but the latter, especially if well funded and supplied with a sack of carrots and sticks that are up to the task, can accomplish something in the short term.

Gangs look like outta control non human species, but in fact they're very patriarchial/heirarchal, and if the word goes out that "we're playing ball" from the men who actually run em, then ball WILL be played.

Gee, 2000 to 3000 gang bangers STORM he miracle mile and cause total chaos.

I'm sure the UNARMED social workers will deal wiith the chaos.

It is an improvement since they will be armed with whistles.
Any normal person who goes into Chicago deserves what the howling mobs do to them.
