Gov Kristi Noem Says If You Don’t Like Vaccination Mandates, Just Quit Your Job

July 31, 2021 | Sundance | 657 Comments

It’s always there, right below the conservative veneer; and if you wait, it surfaces. This tweet highlights the difference between ‘conservative’ corporatism (traditional GOP class), and MAGA pragmatism (the blue collar dynamic).

The disconnect is found in the difference between what looks like a good ‘talking point’, and the reality of workers having to deal with the issue of mandated vaccinations in the workplace. Just quit your job… not so easy in practice.

The SD Governor seems to overlook that entire sectors of the economy are impacted by federal rules, not just individual companies. Hotel workers, restaurants, cooks and cleaners, mechanics, service industry writ large, are subject to forced business owner compliance with regulatory agencies. When the federal government initiates a mandate, all businesses within that sector are hit with the mandate. Switching jobs offers no security or escape from the mandate.

OSHA, the Dept. of Labor, the Dept. of Agriculture, and many other federal agencies create the system. All private sector businesses regulated by those agencies end up forced to adhere to those rules and regulations. Instead of targeting the solution on the employee, which to be fair does have some merit, leading political figures should be constructing their defense of workers by confronting the source of the underlying mandate; not the workers themselves.

Setting aside the reality that forced mandates for vaccination put the most vulnerable employee demographics in a position of agreeing to the jab or potentially losing the roof over their head; what MAGA voters understand better than the elites that fly above them – is their ability to think through consequences, because they have to actually live with them. MAGA people are smart, really smart, and they are pragmatic to the problems they face.

In some ways, pragmatism is on the opposite end of the continuum from ideological decision-making.

It is one thing to say, “defy the system” (ideologically), it is another thing entirely to actually carry through the process of defiance; when your ability to keep your family safe is contingent upon comfortable invisibility inside the same system.

Governor Noem approaches the issues faced from a top-down perspective. Someone like Donald J Trump has shown he understands the issues we face from a bottom up perspective; and that is entirely why the blue-collar working class has connected to him.

This tweet message makes sense for Noem, because she is surrounded by corporate insight, corporate donors and the corporate prism of politics; and that is how detached upper-management would look upon the challenge. Her suggestions ring true from the perspective of a “free trade” economic picture that exists in theory; however, that ‘free trade’ perspective has been destroyed by massive multinational corporations and government regulation.

The free-market economy is a great soundbite, but it doesn’t exist. There are now corporately controlled segments of the economy that work hand-in-glove with Washington DC through money and lobbyists. This is why buying paint (or anything) from Walmart was ok during the pandemic and “essential -vs- nonessential” lockdown, but buying paint from the local mom and pop hardware store was not allowed.

Wall Street -vs- Main Street.

Governor Kristi Noem is at her political core Wall Street (Koch Brothers etc.). Meanwhile, President Trump is at his political core Main Street.

Trump = Pure MAGA

DeSantis = Poltical MAGA

Noem = MagaLite with a twist of Koch and Corporate money

Haley = Anti-MAGA, pure corporate GOP establishment

Cruz = MAGA opportunism / splitter against MAGA

I work for a rural health care facility where 25% of our employees are unvaccinated. If vaccines were required, and it’s getting close to that, the organization would lose over half the maintenance and janitorial staff along with quite a few other key workers. We’re out in the middle of nowhere and it’s hard already to find enough good staff.

If you don't like the vaxx mandate, force the employer to legally FIRE you.
Then the court action can begin....

No offense, BV141, but do you really think the USSC won't take the side of the political class when this case gets up to them? They won't protect the unborn. They won't protect gun rights. They won't protect the 2020 vote. About all they protect when controlled by "Republicans" is unlimited police powers and immunity and any case that favors the employer and the rich.

Agreed.

I'm sorry but it is just dumbfounding to me how folks, who have access to read TB2K on a daily basis, have ANY thoughts that the normal paths of voting, judiciary or any other "civil" means, whatsoever, will work this time around.

Which thread in the last decade ( Give or take a year ) have you all missed?

Workers whose employers are mandating sex for continued employment have the power to say no. Our robust economy and job market gives them the option to find a new employer that values personal choice and responsibility, and doesn’t force sex on their employees.

Funny, change a couple of words and all of the sudden it is coercion. Tons of sexual harassment case law and lots of money paid out in those cases. For a vaccine though it is all good I guess.

So, throwing away any chance at any other outcome by just quitting, or taking the shoot is a better idea? OooooooooKay.

Maybe I'm a little slower than usual today but what's the beef with her?
It seems to me those are the only two choices.

Neither are good choices but there ain't any others.
Take the jab or quit.

I'm a big fan of the 10th Amendment and, maybe, SD should nullify any mandates.

What else can be done?

She does not have the right or the power to tell the private sector what to do, about vaccines.
Those that bitch cause she does not force her will on a company, remember.
She won't be in power forever, but her power will transfer to the next governor.
Oh and while you bitch flush your conservative/small government card down the toilet.

No one wants a firing on their resume, and again no one wants to quit a job and be without income for an indefinite period. It's a tough decision. But with more information coming out about the vax's side effects, which may include death, I believe your comment is the correct one. Force a firing. Let them state the cause. That's when those little voice recorders are handy items. They may not put it in writing, but have the gall to say the firing was anti-vax related. I suspect there will be legal actions nation wide to set precedents. A smart employer just may back down if you force it.

Don't know why anybody is blaming Noem. You can't have your cake and eat it too. If you want gov't to be hand's off yourself and the private sector, then it's going to be a business's prerogative to require an employee to be vaccinated, masked, or leave. It's been this way in the health care world especially, for a long time, and I doubt it will ever change.

It's not up to the governor. The only way there could be legal employee protections would be if the state legislature or Congress passed a law restricting employers from vaccine mandates. It may be coming in some states..or depending on which way the political winds blow, from Congress. Note that word: restricting. Like that sometimes, do ya?

Until that changes, YOU make your decisions and YOU live with the consequences of your decisions. It's too hard? Life is sometimes hard.

At that point, it is time to have "an axe to grind".
All those onerous rules they have put on paper to "look good", the ones that everybody at all levels ignores, start following them. Grind every process to a halt.

No one is irreplaceable. Keeping the lights on while they are maneuvering a "new normal " will be problematic.

Please read my previous comment #16. There are always several choices to any given situation. There are many that think like you stated, which is to take the shots or quit (I deplore the government PC buzz words "take the jab", just effing hate it).
I effing hate it, too! But because it's Newspeak, everyone and their brother has to say it.

Don’t let the Piss Ants get you down…
Well she threw herself under the bus just like the Alabama governor.

She’s tried to cultivate the freedom oriented right, but keeps slipping up and showing her true colors.

Much like Kirstin Gillebrand in New York State, who as a Representative was carefully supportive of 2A Rights…. Once in the Senate seat, she’s become a Progressive Red as bad as any of them. As much as I detest Chuckie, he’s always been a dick. She carefully crafted an image as a moderate to conservative DemonRat to get elected and retain her House seat until the big prize opened up. She should be priority #1 for NY citizens to send packing.

Noem, along with others, have made some ill-thought out statements. Not everyone works at a minimum wage job where switching positions right now is faster than getting a paralegal job, which can take months, as one example.

Unless you truly hate your job and are going to quit anyway, it makes sense to follow the previous advice given and take other actions, including to let them fire you.

She is correct. An at-will employee would have to adhere to the employer's demand or quit. Now unionized employees are different, as are those who have disabilities. Just looking at this from an administrative/legal standpoint. She could push for a law to bar that, but that's not likely.

Yep. She should have kept her mouth shut.

I can tell you, if enough health care workers say 'no' to the vaccine mandate, they won't have enough staff to care for patients and will have to reverse their decision. If my system mandates it, I may walk, as well as other HCWs I know.

I have said this many times. But it has occurred to me that they may use lack of staff to justify importing healthcare workers from foreign nations.

I thought about that. But if the other nations are also having a crisis and the workers are needed, would their country even allow them to come? Just a grey area I've wondered about.

She’s just a pretty rino it seems.
I agree, glad I don't live in her state. Not that the governor of my state is any better and actually worse. I'd never trust her again. There are only two governors that I would trust, Abbot and DeSantis.

I bet there is a fresh new batch waiting in the islands.

What if the govt pulls a Reagan/ airtraffic control situation? Then call up the military to fill in.

Just a thought I had today.
