I did not write this.
Over time, the good caring people of Pleasantville, who noticed growing numbers of snakes in their yards, were told that snakes are a natural expression of bio-diversity and that, “diversity is our greatest strength™”.
From time to time, someone was bitten by a snake, but all concern was discounted by pointing out that, only a small percentage of people suffer snakebites, and that learning to live with the risk of snakebite, is part of living, in a vibrant city with serpents.
Soon after, others were bitten by poisonous snakes and died, but the people were assured that, “not all snakes are poisonous", and that serpents try to avoid contact with humans. They were told that the deaths were due to atypical snakes, and that it would be unfair to judge all vipers, on the basis of an ‘incident’, with unorthodox serpents.
Nonetheless, there was popular concern with the infestation of snakes in their yards. People were preoccupied with the serpents, and avoiding snakebites. Everyone lived in fear of disturbing the viper’s nests.
More deaths followed … the victims themselves were blamed, for their intolerant attitudes, and getting into the serpents space. It’s claimed that the snakes were provoked, and that the snake attacks were an unfortunate response to provocations. These sorts of regrettable events could have been avoided, by not crowding the vipers.
Slowly the public learned that merchants and aid organizations, were importing snakes and throwing them in peoples yards. Entire sectors of the local government, as well as local businesses, profit from the importation of snakes, serpent control, viper aid etc.. These so-called ‘stakeholders’, mobilized to protect their economic interests, which are tied, to the continuing traffic in snakes.
Advertising campaigns were created, and the mass media deployed, to create a moral panic over ‘irrational’ snake haters, whom they labeled, ‘snakists’. Anyone who objected to having serpents thrown in their yard, were now vilified as vile ‘snakists’, with their fear of snakebites disparaged as narrow-minded ‘snakism’.
Violent mobs of snake lovers were organized to hector ‘snakists’ in the streets and in their homes. Campaigns of intimidation were launched on all media platforms, to have them fired from their jobs, for ‘snakism’.
“Snake studies” became trendy, with people earning advanced degrees in "Serpent culture”, as snake charmers.
Snake charmers held seminars, for the public to get close to vipers, with serpent awareness campaigns and ‘free’ programs in public libraries, for toddlers, with anacondas, black mambas, cobras, rattlesnakes and pythons. Pro-snake propaganda crusades intensified on all media platforms, with pro-serpent testimonials. Viper appreciation educational programs, were inflicted on children, in the local schools.
Laws were passed to prevent anyone from badmouthing snakes, with hearings before quasi-judicial tribunals, stacked with serpent lovers, who fined intolerant snake haters, for spouting ‘snakist’ slurs. Local employers were now obliged to hire snake charmers, to hold serpent sensitivity seminars for employees. ‘Snakist’ backsliders are forced to attend ‘anti-snakism’ reinforcement programs, or jailed in prison cells with serpents, to make them confront their spiteful hatred.
All of society was mobilized to be more welcoming to vipers.
The solution, which is to remove the snakes from their yards, is never proposed.
Viper removal is never mentioned by anyone in authority. Any ‘snakists’ who suggest serpent segregation, or expatriation, are fined or jailed, for their ‘irrational’ hatred of snakes.
No one is permitted to ask, who’s responsible for putting the vipers in peoples yards, or why they’re doing that ?
