Skunk Spray Remedy

While this isn't 'medicine' or any alternative health care product, I wanted to share this recipe for treating pets who have been skunk sprayed.

One pint Hydrogen Peroxide
One small box of Baking Soda
A couple of squirts of any dish washing liquid (Dawn is the best)
One gallon of water makes an effective, scientifically based antidote.

I used this on my cat and it worked great.

I can vouch that this does work great as I've had to use it on my sweet dog 2 times now. What I did though was first get him wet with water, then rubbed the dry baking soda on him thoroughly, and then poured the hydrogen peroxide/soap solution over him. Rubbed thoroughly again, rinsed him and then washed him with regular soap. He still had some smell for a while when he got wet but it did fade with time. I hope I never have to do it again - Pew!

My dad used this recipe on his dog and it worked! I wished I had found it last year when my Great Pyrenees got sprayed. I tried everything, nothing worked. I have this tucked away for future reference. :)

may all be well
I just copied it to save. The other night a skunk sprayed right in front of our house and the smell was unbearable for two days. So they're around...

This is the most effective recipe for a skunk wash around. Hunters and more impressivly mushers who are running double coated dogs in the wilds use it.

The standard method is to mix this in a 3 liter bottle then apply to the coat. After applied, let sit on the coat for at least 10 preferably 15 minutes.

WARNING:
Do NOT get this in the animal's eyes, nose or mouth. Use a sponge of rag to get the face wet.
and
RINSE RINSE and keep rinsing. It is very drying and can be caustic to the skin. ALL remains of this MUST be rinsed off the coat.

I have bathed several Malamutes with this and when these directions are followed, it eliminates the skunk smell (or any other biological odor - like a wonderful full turn yourself green roll in fresh cow poop) and unlike any other remedy I have tried the odor does not come back a soon as the dog gets wet.

Ok - 2 of our dogs have been hit by skunks 5 times in the last year so I've gotten pretty good at getting the smell off of them. The one yr old got it full on about 2 mornings ago. I have found this method works very good to get the smell off. I first wet them down and then rub the dry baking soda all over them, especially the areas where they were directly hit. This allows me to get at the delicate face area (where I don't want to pour the solution). I let it sit for a few minutes. This, in itself, seems to go a long ways in reducing the smell.

Then I dump the solution of water/baking soda/peroxide (I don't use soap) over them and rub that in (not on face). I rinse them and check for any more suspicious smells and I may have to rub more baking soda in to particular spots and rinse. Then I bathe them with regular shampoo and they are good. Just wanted to share that approach since it seems to work good for me.
