SHINGLES THREAD

One other thing- LYSINE is amazingly effective for herpes infections. If I was susceptible to shingles, I'd be taking a Lysine supplement, if not daily, at least at the first HINT of it coming back.

There is a herpes infection in cattle called mammalitis. It's an infection of the teats and udder, and supposedly only transferred within the herd from infected animals. Somehow, we (and at least half a dozen other herds in our breed the same spring) started having problems with it. It's horrible... it spreads through the udder and can turn gangrenous. According to the vets, there is NO cure. Well... I've developed a salve and dip which DOES cure it... and within an amazingly short time IF it's started early. It works so well that there are times we can't believe it. One of the main ingredients is lysine powder.

(interestingly, our vet believes the virus got into our herd via semen... all the herds with the problems breed AI. This isn't generally accepted as possible, but does seem to be the only real explanation)

Where does one get Lysine powder?

But I admit, neither of us knew much about SHINGLES till Mom's illness and man, this is a disease straight from HELL!!! It must kill thousands of elderly people every year (if not directly, from secondary infections and complications like stroke, MI, etc).

Edit to add: I do NOT trust any vaccines any more.

Sounds like a good trade-off to me. Agonizing death from shingles or possible death from vaccines? Wonder why the RN didn't notice that?

Just want to let everyone know that yes shingles can come back and yes I have another case of it right now. Taking my herbal infusion and seeked more help online. I had bookmarked the EarthClinic site and went there and read the first page of testimonials. It may be of some interest to others so I came back to link it for you. Luckily my shingles this time is milder than before being on my upper chest and a little up the back of my neck. It was almost exactly 11 months ago I had the first bout with it. The worse part right now is I feel my skin is highly sensitive and it feels like my skin is crawling. :( Taking apple cider vineager internally also and dabbing ACV on the little blisters. I had been using tea tree oil earlier this week not realizing it was shingles again till yesterday. The tea tree oil definately helped but the relief didn't last more than an hour or so. I will be picking up Lysine tomorrow to add to the rest of my mess. :)

Here's the link to Earth Clinic... http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/shingles.html

I would second the Lysine for shingles, as I had a small case of shingles (but the pain was BIG) and it helped alot. But I
never had chicken pox so not sure where it came from. Lysine is also quite effective for helping with canker sores in the mouth, so now try to take it every day. My friend had shingles in her ears last year, very painful and hard to get rid of, but lysine did help.

Just want to add I'm STILL dealing with a mild case of shingles AND my oldest son has now come down with Chicken Pox. He was vaccinated against them.

The reason for the explosion in shingles since the chicken pox vaccine in 95 is because people aren't getting the natural "booster shot" of being exposed to pox as a parent or grandparent. Kids and grandkids aren't coming home with anymore and the vaccines in addition to limited effectiveness only may last a decade. We've traded a couple of days of missed work home with a sick child for a painful adult affliction- whoopee

My poor 5 yr old grandson was diagnosed with shingles 3 weeks ago. Doc said it is extremely rare for a child his age to get them. (only like 15% of cases are among kids as young as 12-15, and even more rare for kids as young as 5)

Poor thing! Oh I hope it was mild at his age at least!

I know it wasn't as bad a case as my brother got when he was in in 20s or as bad as what Grandma got when she was in her late 70s.

But the doc told DD "don't worry, he'll never be able to get it again". I told her I know that's wrong. Brother got it twice. Grandma had it repeatedly off an on until she died in her mid 80s.

Hope in chains...
I have come to the conclusion that I had shingles last year-lasted about 6 weeks. Started on the nape of my neck, moved up into my hair, down my shoulders and moved all around my torso under the breasts, was in spots down both arms, and was creeping toward the groin. the ONLY thing that helped the astounding itching was to take a cool bath with a half gallon of apple cider vinegar in the water and the rest of the day, i would pat white vinegar directly onto the sores and wait till it dried-it would stop the itching for about an hour at a time. (hurt like a bitch but you had to tough it out until it dried) I REALLY hope that I'm never visited again with that, the itching was massive. I dont believe I had any nerve involvement.

My daughter got shingles after they vaxed her young daughter with the chicken pox vax. I had CP when I was a kid and have had cold sores all my life around my mouth and nose especially after dental work where they had to stick one certain nerve in my mouth with the deadening stuff. a sunburn would set the mouth ones off too.

Not familiar with posting yet, please let me know if I post on wrong reply thread.
1st there is a single shot to prevent Shingles, you can get it at any Walgreens, grocery Pharmacy that gives flu shots. Medicare pays for the shot in full if you are 65 yards old. they suggest you are 60to get it, but it actually is much more effective if you get it in your 50's by studies they have done. 3rd The cost if no on medicare is around $95 for the shot, which does not hurt. And dont let them tell you that you can get shingles rrom a shot, IT HAS NEVER HAPPENED. The shot has been out for 4 or 5 years now. 4th It is related to stress and if you have had Chick Pox in your youth. The virus is there dormant in body until there is a stressful event that usually sets it off. Stress is different for everyone, could be a death, an immune system run down because of life style & then a final examine, or finances could trigger it. I hope that this helps someone to get that shot and not get Shingles. it is extremely painful. Night Owl

After watching my mother suffer for months, I got the vaccine immediately after it became available. So far, so good.

I had it three times. The first was the worst and each time after much much less. The last time it was barely noticeable. The first time it struck my lower back and it was so painful it sent me to the emergency room. I don't wish it on anyone.

Folks... if you are concerned about shingles (and if you are above 50 years, and have had chicken pox or the chicken pox vaccine, you should be) but don't want to take the vaccine, you might want to consider buying a course of the appropriate anti-virals at alldaychemist and keeping them on hand.

Because they WORK... but for it to work well and knock the virus down and out, you need to take the meds EARLY... basically, within 24 hours of the first symptoms. They aren't especially cheap even from ADC, but almost certainly cheaper than your local drugstore. And if you have the stuff on hand, you don't have to run to the ER (and spend $1k or more, plus meds)

As always, do your own research, and make sure there aren't any contraindications in your own health history...

My mom has had the shingles twice, both times with severe pain. My husband's aunt had them three years ago on her leg and to this day still has pain and difficulty walking. When I turned 60 I got the shot and experienced no side effects. I did find out from the pharmacist who gave it to me that they are now recommending the shot be given at the age of 50 rather than 60. He said they are finding the younger a person is when they get it, the better the results. My insurance at the time covered the entire cost of the shot.
