‎The Covid-19 pandemic continues to spread throughout China. Hospitals in many places have recorded serious medical conditions. Online information shows that Shanghai's "health system" collapsed, with many hospitals overpacking patients. Patients without "relationships" are rejected by the hospital, putting many elderly patients in danger. Some people complain that "seeing a doctor is too difficult."

This is a show case of the collapsing chinese healthcare system. Spotlight on China, I could never find out who runs or owns them, but their reporting is very traditional, facts only, no narrative or opinions inserted.

I wondered at that too. At around :40, the speaker says, "no contacts means people who have no relationships with leaders or doctors in the hospital". So maybe the squeaky wheel, or it's who you know (or have dirt on?) that gets you some level of care?

Maybe. I was also thinking of the many “hospitals“ in third-world countries where family members have to stay with patients in the hospital, providing much of their care, providing food, etc.

I think your explanation is more likely.

No extended family. May especially refer to children. China's one child policy lead to single child families raising spoiled, entitled male :Buddha Babies" who don't follow custom by supporting the elderly generation etc. Then there is the whole "Let it rot!" and "Lying down" movement where the younger generation completely flakes out.

The lying down movement as far as I can tell was an allowable labor protest movement. Screw working for the man and having nothing to retire on. I will live through my life in semi retirement instead.

The let it rot I think stems from a lot of real estate retirement investments that went to poo poo and the fact that CCP makes it impossible to care in some aspects...
