Thank you for contacting me. I appreciate your concern for our nation, and while these are difficult times, I know that we will get through them together.
On January 6, 2021, Congress met in joint session to complete our Constitutional duty of counting the electoral votes certified by every state and the District of Columbia.
Following incendiary falsehoods from the President, this process was disrupted by a violent mob who broke through security barriers and illegally stormed the U.S. Capitol Building in an effort to delay the electoral vote certification.
The behavior we witnessed, which resulted in at least five deaths, including a Capitol Police officer, was a violent insurrection and wholly un-American. I am committed to ensuring that the individuals involved be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Later that night, after the Capitol Building was secured, I joined my colleagues as Congress reconvened, and we fulfilled our Constitutional duty to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Our nation faces unprecedented challenges, but our democracy is stronger than the destructive behavior of any mob.
It is evident that the President is no longer fit to lead our nation. He incited the attack and refused to act as his supporters ransacked the seat of our government. There has never been a more clear violation of a President’s oath of office.
On January 13, 2021, the United States House of Representatives approved an Article of Impeachment against President Trump for inciting the insurrection against the Capitol by a vote of 232 to 197. The articles must now be brought to the Senate, where a trial will be held, as outlined by the Constitution.
So long as this President remains in office, he remains a significant threat to our national security and our constitution – I support his conviction and removal.
As your Senator, I assure you that I will remain committed to working with my colleagues – both Republicans and Democrats– to address the serious challenges ahead and ensure our nation emerges from this crisis stronger than ever.
