CHAT Security Cameras - Hide? Visible?

I have 16 cameras between inside and outside. I did not hide them and nobody has ever noticed. The police know they are there, my friends, and have asked for video on occasion. Regular folks never notice.

Wow! Nothing should get by with 16 cameras.

I would be doing well to manage 4 of them. More than that requires drinking more coffee than I should drink in a 24-hour period.

I have a 5' tall 4 board fence around 3 acres and an automatic (locked) gate to get inside- ✓ And 2 GSD's ✓ And 3 geese ✓ But my geese are sweet :D
For future reference White Chinese geese are mean and loud. Emden geese have their moments especially when eggs are being laid, but are nicer than Chinese geese.

I'd say to put a mix, with a game cam or two.

I have a game cam along the back of my property. It's fun to watch! That was well worth installing, just to see nature. I've got a bird feeding station, bat house, and tiny, shallow pool back there for the critters. Haven't seen any humans back there. I'm sure the day will come.

one day my nieghbour mentioned to me

that it was a cool stand I had at the back of my property

and also.. why would I have a deer stand so close to my house?

both stands are well away from property lines

Are they inside a fence or blazed property line?

Motion detector lights, have four around my house......that and three sets of flood lights connected to switches inside. Also....1/2 the 5 acres has 6ft chain link fence topped with barbed wire (different story)

Random 9 minute video on with DORI examples incuding nighttime. (most cameras have a good daytime image, at night is where the image matters)

Again don't get hung up on hidden cameras if you are looking to be able to hand off useful video/screenshot(s) to Law Enforcement or to use in court at entry points inside or out make sure you can get a good face shot.

Instead of hiding cameras make sure your video storage is secured.

My current system is using 11 IP cameras ranging from 2MP to 5MP on the house and 8 Analog cameras on the shop. Data from the BlueIris Pc in the house copies over to the shop and data from the shop to the house.

We have several cameras around the house and barn. The most important ones are visible and out of reach. Since we live on a hill, our garage is on the basement level and its driveway is below ground level. One camera is placed on the window ledge of the room over the garage, in very plain sight and out of reach of most ladders, pointing directly at the driveway. Every delivery person appears to notice it, they all look up at it. I also like to set up a couple of hidden motion detector cameras inside the house if we are going to be away overnight or longer. Zmodo is our preferred brand.

We have motion detector lights around the entrances to the house and barn. This is mostly for our convenience as there are no street lights or other exterior lighting where we live, but it also acts as a deterrent. Our vehicles are never parked outside and our interior house lights are on smart timers, cued to the time of sunset, whether we are home or not. We set up an away-schedule for them to turn on and off randomly after dark when we are gone overnight. It's nearly impossible to tell when we are away other than when the camper is gone. Several of our neighbors have had break-ins and thefts but we have never had one, so far.

One security item I like is the Fake TV. There are several types, this is the one we have: Amazon.com : FakeTV FTV-11 Extra Bright Burglar Deterrent Television Simulator : Security And Surveillance Products : Camera & Photo It's placed in the bedroom most visible from the street, and it really does look from the outside like someone is home, watching TV.

I have found that having the red glow from the night vision of my cameras have deterred much of the problems I was previously having with a DEMON child that had lived here with me for a number of years before she and her "father" were ejected>>>>long story, but she was attempting to kill my animals and did kill my two alpacas, two of my goats and attempted to get my dogs killed by destroying their pen so they would run out on the road.

I actually have had a LOT less traffic in and around my place after putting up the night vision cameras.

The ONE time I had further problems my electric was out for 2 days and they broke inot my garage looking for things to steal. Not much in there anymore....so they were disappointed.

I need to order new cameras because mine are about shot>>>which is UPSETTING, as they are only about two years old!!
That is the stuff I got from Lorex. This time I will go locally and then hopefully also be able to get HD in addition to night vision>>>
Can you take the old cameras and mount them so it appears you have the same or more coverage? I contemplate this from time to time. However, sometimes it is better to be gray than a red head.

Finally not a lurker!
Last few days I think we had a guy casing our place or something. He has been driving slowly by multiple times and even stopped and tried to call the dogs over to the fence this morning. I saw it on camera and ran outside, got on my trusty golf cart shotgun across my lap and went his way calling the dogs back and he took off.

so, I decided to redo my security cameras that were installed 3 years ago due to growth of many of the trees I've planted. Lots of blind spots now all over the yard.

Finally my question, to hide or not to hide the cameras?

I've heard it both ways, better to hide them as cameras say this person has something worth stealing, or in plain sight as a deterrent?

My situation: we live on a loop road with very little traffic but am 1000' from a major road and my yard is visible. My yard is quite manicured, I have 3 acres fenced in with a 4-board wood fence around the property and have 5 outbuildings with lots of "stuff" inside worth stealing. I'm guessing we already look like a good location to hit minus the GSD's maybe. I'm thinking for us its probably better the cameras are out in plain view?

Thoughts or advice?
Both.

What frightens me? That he was going to get your dogs. Even out here in no man’s land we chain and lock the gates because of so much dog theft.

Of course, I know neither your dogs or setup on that. And quite frankly, if they want the dogs badly enough, they will get them. (Under our current setup.)

But we have one who barks in the house (he’s older) and then my pup is the fall out and see what it is dog. So between those two, you know when something is going on. But, still doesn’t make me feel entirely safe for the dogs.

I REALLY wish I could afford to buy my dd a good security system. Wouldn’t take a heck of a lot to cover her area, but I can’t do it right now. Sigh.

WOW! If you have 16 you might as well go 20, you might miss that spider in the corner.:p

I have used game cameras at the back of my property to watch for poachers. My results have been mixed.

I've had a couple stolen, so I put them higher. After that, upon viewing the memory card I found that I only had a couple of pictures after a 4 week interval. The shots I did have showed a couple of people waling away with an extension ladder. Turns out that they went to the trouble of taking out the memory cards and wiping them, then reinstalling them. Who does that?

I have also had the lenses obscured by paintballs. Surprisingly, none have ever been shot at by rifles.

I was also at a trade show and talked to a manufacturer that sent me about a dozen of cameras that had been sent in for warranty repair and were junked. Those stayed in place for a while. I think they were opened up and found to be inoperable, so they were ignored.

Cell phone signal is spotty so cell based camera's are ineffective. We will have fiber optics within the year so I'm thinking we can protect the homestead with internet based camera's, but the poaching problem will be a recurring problem.

Not much advice, but some FYI.

I run Nest cameras at all of my properties, exterior of course. They have 2 way sound and IR. They are simple, reliable, and are only interrupted in power or WiFi outages. So far, I haven’t needed anything more sophisticated
