Knitting Second try on a gansey for me

Falmouth Navy is a beautiful deep indigo-ish shade. Hard to see the stitches in, but hey, the project will only cover hundreds of hours. Anyway, several months ago, I started on a gansey in this yarn (posted in the Autumn Thread). Looked beautiful, but about four inches in, realized the piece was somehow too small around. I swatch, and measure, and make the calculations, but these things happen anyway. That's knitting for you. Set the whole thing aside, finished a nice shawl in the meantime, but I still want the sweater. Ordered a THIRD cone, since so much of the first was used up in small swatches. Of course, the original dyelot is no nowhere to be found, so a close match will have to do (assuming I need it - or, I can order a fourth cone - no. Just, no). Grrr....

Had a look at the earlier small false start and the completed Cordova gansey to determine how many more stitches I need to cast on to make the intended diameter - except, now, I can't get that gage and the knitting is looser. Furthermore, WHAT was that cast-on?? I like it, but can't seem to replicate it either. So, still swatching at square one. WHY do I bother??

Cast-on was Old Norwegian/German Twist. Had to go back to videos to re-learn it. Thanks to Suzanne Bryan and Very Pink Knits. Worth learning, it looks better and is stretchier than the regular slingshot.

Re-calculated and re-charted everything out again onto graph paper. (If I ever publish patterns for my pieces, they will simply be copies of handwritten graphpaper schematics - you don't really need much else)

Excluding the double pearl faux side seams, I needed a multiple of four for the ribbing, and a multiple of 16 for the lower horizontal zig-zag motif. (Not worrying about the main vertical pattern arrangement at this time.) Will be casting on a total of 356 to get the boxy size I want for this tiny gage. This is why you don't unravel previous failed efforts - they are your best source of information. Fingers crossed that I haven't overlooked some other damn thing....

Here is a 13 min cast-on video from Suzanne:
