Last thursday around 11:30 pm I saw two FIREY green bolides originate from the same area in the sky and travel horizontally in OPPOSITE directions. N.Atlanta area.
The first was VERY LARGE AND SLOW and VERY detailed. The second appeared just as the first vanished, and was about half the size. A "pea" at arms legnth with a tail approximately the size of a bic pen at arms length. The first appeared to travel to the north and second to the south.
I have not heard of any reports.

I am curious if there were any other witnesses. Theye were MASSIVE so I am surprized that it was not a big deal.

Wobble, that is really something! No, I didn't see anything but I wasn't looking either.

Please excuse my ignorance but what exactly are "bolides"? Sounds like a heavenly body of some sort ... like a comet or such. Is that what you mean?

WOW! I saw it!

Really now...I thought of posting this the night I saw it, but shrugged it off.

It was one night as I was coming home from work, just a few days or so ago; I can not remember which night it was.

As I was traveling somewhat westerly from the Nashville area, I saw a very bright and GREEN ball of light traveling from (what seems to be) north to south (me traveling westerly, the light above from my right to left.

It was in sight through my front windshield for several seconds; probably about three to four; then it dissappeared at the ground level/horizon.

I was so amazed at seeing it I kept looking for a crash site or fire or such as I traveled homeward; but did not see any sign of it; and heard no reports on the news of it.

It was far brighter and larger than any shooting star we've ever seen; from my perspective also it seemed to be about the size of a pea, or half a dime, at arms length. AND it was the color of a green signal light you see on traffic signals! Very green. No trail that I could see.

Maybe a piece of space junk which entered the atmosphere?

Interesting.

Thanks for reporting it.
warren.

A Bolide is meteor...or something like that. It was HUGE...the first one....and EAST of me and I am in Georgia.
The only explaination of the" opposite direction "thing I can think of is that one went on one side of the earth and the other went around the other side...PLUS they both initially appeared to be heading at me and then curved northward and southward and then parallel to horizon....about 11:30-12ish last thursday.

Hello, just emailing to shed some insight on the fireball on the east coast. I happened to see one on friday night (2/13/04) with several friends, as we were leaving work outside of Allentown, PA. It was huge, i mean the actual fireball itself was about the size of a pea if held at arm's reach away, which sounds small, but most shooting stars are pin pricks, this was bigger and in the atmosphere. The weird thing, and scary i guess, was that it was greenish in color, and blue and orange sparks fell from it at several points. It flew northwest to southeast, and if it hit, it would have hit on south mountain in bethlehem or near steel city, but as of yet nothing has come forth other than a few other people seeing the same thing.

I also noticed the article on CNN is from 2001, so it isnt talking about the same thing i am, but i must say, it was cool! Oh and good job on the site, i have been a follower of your work for some time and i really what you do, you are truly a beacon of light and knowledge and guidance in this age of stygian darkness!!

Oh, crap..bumped thread inadvertently!

MIGHT AS WELL ASK:

Anyone here ever witness a meter do a hard 90 degree turn?

They don’t. And since meteors do their thing in space, definitely no one has.
I'm not the only witness, nor the witness to other identical events*, Dennis, but thanks for moving it.

* While driving to Muskogee in 1987 I saw four fireballs, three were green and one was red, drop straight down out of the sky while on Muskogee turnpike near where that cluster of radio towers are, and drop to just above the ground and instantly, at the same speed, go suddenly horizontal at what appeared to be less than a couple hundred feet off the ground. They were not that far away because the objects were clearly in front of the hills off in the distance. If they were further, the hills would have blocked the pov.

Untrained observers are notorious for misreporting the behavior of meteors. The vast majority can't judge the distance or the height or where a meteorite appears to land. Is it really any more fantastical that your visual perception can be deceived than to believe a physical object appears to defy the laws of physics?
