WEATHER Sally: On the ground updates

I live in Gulfport MS about 4 blocks north of the beach. I just finished boarding up my windows and trying to decide whether to leave or not. Most of the motels from Hattiesburg south are booked solid. I looks like I might be riding out the storm. At least I've got an unopened bottle of whiskey waiting for me if I need it. The local weather just said it is a strong Cat 2 and only one mile per hour below a Cat 3. Scary.

Oh no, another member affected! I didn't realize you were here in Mississippi, too. My prayers are going out for you as well.

You guys might get lucky, and it skirts off to the East of you. I went through the same thing two weeks ago. It's still spooky, and you still have to act like it is headed right at you, because it just might.

You got that right these storms have a mind of their own, no telling what direction it will go.

Man I wish you would get out of there. Come on up to Meridian, it's only another 80 miles, you can make that in another hour.

Go north if you can Doc, they told us Hattiesburg would be "safe" during Fredrick and it not only tore both porches off the building I was in and destroyed the gas station across the street, we had no power for a week except at the university (which was also across the street - and the let us take showers if we had a student ID).

Winds were over 90 mph in Hattiesburg...

It appears as though the track is moving farther east, though we're still getting intermittent rain squalls, which keeps knocking my internet out. From my vantage point it almost seems as if the storm is in the process of stalling. I'll keep all of you posted as my wonky net allows.

We keep dodging the bullet(s) this year...Slidell...

Be safe, neighbors!
I lived in Slidell for Katrina and managed to get out in late 2010. We did evacuate for Katrina, good thing, it moved the house over a couple of feet, lost almost everything. No insurance and only a few dollars from Road Home. We both got paid our full incomes during the 2 1/2 months my work was down (Tulane University).

stay safe and God bless.

God is good all the time

Not much new to report. The storm is moving at SW around 5 mph and they are showing the projected track moving farther east away from us. I'm a bit concerned that it is stalling and will grow stronger. As for us, nothing much yet, but a breeze and on again, off again rain squalls.

I thought I heard a news blurb that it's now CAT 3? A little bit worrisome that all communication from members there on this thread stopped about 2 hours ago....

OK gang, this will be my last post for the evening. Sally is moving at - it seems - less than 3 mph WSW and as I've observed previously, seems to be stalling. Mawmaw and myself appear to be out of the hurricane probability cone, but are not out of the woods as regards high winds and rain/tornadoes.

I'll pick this up again tomorrow. Thank you all for your prayers and for following the thread.

I went thru Elena years ago (not by choice) shortly after I moved to the Pascagoula area.

I remember how fickle she was. At the moment, I think your best bet would be to go as far West as you can and a little North to keep away from the immediate coastal area. JMHO

Best of luck no matter what you decide. We all have to do what we can do within our ability/circumstances. Just prepare and be aware of nasty last minute kinks to plans.

Prayers for all that end up in harms way .

It looks like I will get tons of rain up here in NE Alabama, but so far they do not have me in a tornado threat area, subject to change of course.

The National Hurricane Center's 10:00 AM update says that Sally is still moving NW, though at only 2 mph. That counts as a stall in my book. The center appears to be south of Mobile, AL and winds are 85 mph. As for us, it's a bit overcast and slightly breezy, but the rain has stopped.

Sally's wind field is still very large and I'm not counting anything out. Storms like this can behave in unexpected ways when they stall offshore.

Woke up to sun shine !!! Cloudy and windy now not bad. Still moving NW at 2 miles an hour out of the cone now but still watching and waiting. They say it is going to Mobile. Watches and warnings have been remove for NOLA, Florida panhandle and Mobile getting the rain bands now, still have storm surge hitting MS coast Let y'all know when it decides to move north Thank you for all the prayers.

As of 3pm, it looks like Sally is drifting East toward Alabama. I am glad it missed us, but I hope it enters an area like Mobile Bay where it will do less damage, outside of flooding. Prayers out to everyone in it's path.

At 7 PM, Tuesday Sept. 15th here in Pensacola: wind gusting to about 35 mph and picking up some, rain erratic but at least sprinkling all the time, usually above light but mostly not heavy.

I just saw this and now I'm worried about both Doc and Minnesota.

It's not so much the eye or even the winds, but slow, slow-moving rains surrounding this thing will go on, and on, and on!!!

Not going to flood here or at my mother's, both being 30 plus feet above Escambia Bay with excellent drainage. FWIW, it's my week without my girls, getting them Friday. If my estranged wife got flooded out tomorrow and made homeless, I'd be more than happy to come pick up my girls (and drive away while waving once to my EW as she stood on her front porch with a foot of water inside her house).

Spann man said north of I 59 it wouldn't amount to much.

Yeah, for now; just have to hope it stays that way.

I'm just a little North of I-59. Earlier, I was supposed to get a lot of rain (10 inches or more over a few hours) and some of the depression strength winds.

They lowered the rain amounts earlier but they crept back up some during the the last couple of updates. (all subject to change again)

Even a low cat hurricane camped out in your front yard and grinding away is Bad News. All y'all in the affected area, stay safe.

And when you get tired of all this, remember there are places where you don't have to go through this over and over and over again.

ETA - Mobile, AL radar loop link- should auto update:

And this one is still strengthening while it is mostly sitting still (2 mph movement). Only 6 mph to cat 3, I can see that happening, hopefully it won't increase very much strength while it is being cantakerous.

Glad I live so far North, the wind picked up here a few minutes ago, even as far away as I am.

We never considered leaving down east in NC for anything less than a Cat 3. But we were a bit inland from the coast and storm surge was not an issue - though wind and rain definitely were.

And I had a strapped down conex box as a storm shelter, since it was impossible to have a basement/shelter underground in that area.
