Farm Rooster sound that’s new to us

One of our roosters has been making sort of a cooing or turkey-like sound. He seems to be making it when some of the hens in the other pen are saying they’re done laying eggs or if they’re fussing. Maybe he’s just trying to woo them from afar, but we’ve never heard this before. Any thoughts?

Yes, all but 2 of the chickens we have now were from last spring.

He’s done the sleepy sound before too. I haven’t heard many of the other chickens do that, but we did hear some do it when we had a large flock a few years ago.

ETA: We have heard him crow and he definitely covers his hens in the evenings so I don’t think there’s anything hormonal. He does seem to be the best-mannered/most caring of the roosters, though.

we had a rooster we called mr grumbles

you would hear him coming, b4 you saw him

sounded like an old man grumbling

it was hilarious

I now have a 1 legged rooster

somehow in his early life (last spring)

he dislodged his leg rite at the hip

it just swings and he hops

he does do his rooster 'duties'

but is harrased by his 2 fellow roos

Maybe. Three of the chickens in there, including him, were removed from the main pen because they were being picked on. He was definitely low man on the totem pole.

I considered that, but we haven’t picked up eggs in that pen in about a week, and none of the other roosters have made the sound. Maybe it’s like Dobbin said and it’s a sound only a subordinate rooster would make.

Bird sex is something called a "cloacal kiss". The openings touch, semen passes to the female. The poor female usually gets the worst of it because he is on top of her so she can get raked/injured from him trying to arrange the parts to achieve the parts touching. Roosters are not known for their ability to finesse mating. I watched one of my young roosters once trying to get an older experienced hen, he missed and I saw the "package" shoot off into space beside. Ewwww!
I don't keep roos anymore. Not worth their keep.

Mine make strange noises when they are mating or hungry. It sounds to me like a cross between a Canadian goose in flight and a bagpipe being played by a 3 year old.

Chickens in general make a huge variety of sounds.
That one was interesting, never heard it in my own.

What a way to have “fun”. Lol. Well, humans would not make attractive noises to chickens, so maybe we are even.
