The wonderful Kroger C-Suite has decided o keep shelves full by stocking any brand they can get. Sort of good for consumers but there's a catch.

There were 3 brands of Mayo on the shelf yesterday; the same size of all three was priced at the same PP as the premium brand. It's the same in canned veggies. Regular potatoes were $1.12/lb, russet, red, Yukon gold for any size bag.

Fairly slick price gouging protocol . . . . .

When and why did tapioca become so expensive? $12.00 for an 8oz box at Wally, and not much better at Amazon.
Wait a couple of days. The market is volatile right now. I noticed today that some prices dropped slightly. Likely politically-influenced, such as the "fixed" rail strike which probably will still happen.
Kroger paper towels and Charmin TP both down $1. Pork loins at $1.79, time to can if we can buy enough and find the time.

We're coming up on mid-terms, time for TPTB to artificially show that inflation is "improving". I see it as a couple of weeks window to stock up. I don't think they can hide it until November, but who knows.

Deli turkey at H‑E‑B. Normally, they have 10 different kinds. Today, none. When I asked why, one drone said, “warehouse is out. Turkey shortage.” I told him I didn’t buy the “turkey shortage” thing, at which point he just said “whatever” and walked away. Cruising the rest of the store, VERY LARGE areas of empty shelves. Seems to be getting worse by the week.

Up here where I live there are hundreds if not thousands of poultry grow houses, and yes the turkey shortage is a very real thing. Bird flu hit many of the turkey farms and hard in the past 18 months. Stores are finally starting to have a consistent supply of chicken eggs, chicken itself is still kind of iffy here. Central Iowa.

The DW and I went to the little burg near us (17 miles away) to pickup scrips and some snacks.

Shopped Dollar General. The dollar bags of coolies are now $1.50 instead of the $1.00 they use to be.

Chips on sale at a good price, 2 for $6 and 2 for $5. Many brands of ceral are 2 for $6. Soup on sale at a good price of $2 per can. The cans of soup are smaller by a 3 ounces than what we buy at Kroger. Progresso and Campbell's Chunky.

Groceries are going up.

Back 6 months or more ago, the food bank gave me one of those Jenny O turkey rolls.

I did not cook it. I purposefully put it away in the freezer, figuring it would be perfect for my wife and I come Thanksgiving.

So if there is a turkey shortage, you folks can have the birds in the supermarket. Me and my dear wife will have some of that baked turkey roll in my freezer, with baked sweet potatoes, some Stove Top stuffing, maybe a green salad, and a big ole pumpkin pie for dessert.

Geez, I am getting hungry just thinking about it…

I want me a dollar bag of coolies! Even for $1.50.
They can keep the laundry up and cook.

I've done that, too. Yeah, it sure saves money. I use cloth napkins, bar towels, and kitchen towels. I don't have to do any extra laundry because of it. I just throw them all in with the bath towels when I wash a load of them and bath cloths.
I've also stopped buying tissues and use men's handkerchiefs. I have allergies so normally would go through at least three boxes of tissues per month so significant savings over the last two years. I made the change when tissues were unavailable during Covid and will never go back. The handkerchiefs are much kinder on my nose than tissues. A dozen handkerchiefs are unnoticeable in a load of laundry and for those who shout unsanitary, I can only say when I do laundry the end result is clean whether it's handkerchiefs, wash cloths or anything else.

I think it's time for all who are struggling to take a hard look at everything we're buying and then decide whether it's a "need" or a "want". Also, time to think outside the box and look for less costly solutions.

I bought a turkey breast last year, just in case. I’m glad we have one in the freezer.

Advertised price of whole untrimmed beef brisket at one store was $3.99/# a couple weeks ago, but none to be had. Talked to the manager and got an unusual (for that store) rain check for two. Called yesterday to check if any in and was told probably not till mid-October.

One of our local churches does a turkey supper every year ahead of Thanksgiving. They serve turkey and all the fixings including cranberries and everything you would want at a Thanksgiving meal. I think they charge around 11 or $12 a plate. They feed around 550 people. This year when they talked to the caterer, they realize they would have to charge somewhere around $25 a plate for their turkey supper. And there was no guarantee that they could even get the turkey. So they are serving broasted pork chops in lieu of turkey this fall. Perhaps next year turkeys will be available and more affordable again.

We have noticed a troubling trend over the past few weeks in our area. There are empty shelves on most items that were on sale. Good on customers but I think this goes to them being squeezed financially and they are changing their patterns to the point that every item on sale gets sold out quickly. I am sure supply might play in to this as well but we have never seen this to the extent it is now. People being squeezed by inflation + supply chain issues = disaster

Tissues are something I seldom ever buy. We just don't have much need for them. One box will last us about 6 months, so I buy a package of them at Sam's that lasts us over two years, at least. I do have a dozen of men's handkerchiefs in storage and over two dozen of lady's handkerchiefs from Germany. Most of those are hand embroidered and crocheted around the edges by Cary's grandmother and aunts. They're almost too pretty to use. I rotate through the stack and keep one in my purse all the time.

I totally agree with you about the needs vs. wants. Even if a person isn't struggling, it just makes sense to me that I don't buy a lot of throw away stuff if I can get by with something more permanent that's used over and over.

On The Level
For the last two weeks, my favorite grocery store has been out of 80/20 grass fed ground cow. They offered a $3 off digital coupon via their reward program.
Went the next day, none to be found. That sale price was less expensive than the natural nothing added regular ground cow. Went two other times, trying to use the coupon, and still nothing.

Did an online pickup. Showed the same grass fed in stock, but on sale, no coupon, for the same price. Again, cheaper than the non grass fed.
Came up as out-of-stock, and they subbed the more expensive non-grass fed. Which is fine, it was just going in the freezer, and I'm sure I'll be happy with it later.

Don't know why they're offering the grass fed for cheaper than the other stuff, especially if it's not kept in stock.
This is the higher end store brand stuff.

There is less and less of the better quality store brand items on the shelves and in coolers. And if for whatever reason they put something on sale, it's gone.

Only good news, got 2 4-packs of 12oz chicken cans for $11.79 each. As well as two cans of store brand corned beef for $3.89 each, the national brand was over $6 per can.

When the masses decide to quickly cut back to 'need" rather than "want", jobs are lost in the "want" sector. Too much job loss also effects the amount of purchases in the "need" sector, which could lead to job losses there, too.

If dominoes keep falling, it may lead to recession/depression. The "want" consumers, along with their buying on credit, is what has kept the whole thing going for so long. The one buffer that I see from previous historic depressions in the US, is that now much of the "want" stuff is made in China. Their economy may suffer more than ours.

Day by day
Just checked out the Kroger sales ad this morning. They have Progresso canned soups on sale, we always get the 'light' version and they're pretty darn good. Last year we'd get them on sale for 99 cents a can, no minimum required; I think the regular price was $1.49. (Correction, DH said the regular price was $1.25 last year).

This week they're on sale for $1.49 if you buy 8; regular price is $2.49. I'm really glad we stocked up on them last year. DH and I split a can, we should have enough for the winter.

Three semi trailers loaded with meat stolen in Nebraska over the weekend, latest in a string of meat cargo thefts
Police in Grand Island, Nebraska, are investigating a meat cargo theft incident that occurred over the weekend and investigating whether it could be connected to a larger meat cargo theft ring.

On Friday, September 16, officers responded to the Lineage Logistics facility at 203 Roberts St E. in Grand Island for a report that two semi trailers were missing from the lot.

The two trailers were loaded with meat from Gibbon Packing Co., according to Grand Island Police.

The estimated value of the two stolen trailers and cargo is estimated at $493,407.85.
A third trailer loaded with meat was also reported stolen from the facility on Sunday, September 18, but police believe that the actual theft took place on Friday the 16th between 7:10 p.m. and 11:29 p.m.

The estimated value of the third stolen trailer and cargo is $273,329.61.

At this time, the trailers and the meat are still missing.

Grand Island Police investigated a similar incident that happened at some time between June 24 and June 26 when two stolen semi trucks were used to steal three semi trailers loaded with meat. Both trucks and two of the trailers were recovered by the Nebraska State Patrol outside of Grand Island city limits. The recovered trailers were empty.

The trailer that is still missing is believed to have contained about $232,666 worth of beef from the JBS Beef plant.

“I think they went around to look for reefer units that were running. The fact that they were all loaded with beef may imply that they had done some level of surveillance,” Grand Island Police Captain Jim Duering told 1011Now.

“It does not look like it was possible for a single person to conduct these thefts. Most likely it was a minimum of two people or more and then on top of that we have a similar thefts of meat products in other areas such as Colfax County and Omaha over the past several weeks that are probably related,” Duering said of the June meat thefts.

The Nebraska meat cargo thefts are also similar to a cargo theft incident that occurred in Iowa earlier this month.

On September 1, a semi truck and three trailers loaded with pork products were reported stolen from the JBS Pork facility in Ottumwa, Iowa. The truck and all three trailers were later found abandoned, but all of the pork product had been removed. The estimated value of the stolen pork is $100,000.

I never used paper towels, paper plates or kleenex tissue when I was raising my family. they were very wasteful.

Now in my mid 70's I use all three although I not wasteful about it. All those years when most people used them I did not but now I do. I have a good supply. I date a box of tissue to see how long it lasts.

That may be for you, but it's not for me.

In splitting a can, you're each getting an average of maybe 80 calories from those different light soups. The calories per dollar comes at an astronomical price. For preppers, one would need an enormous amount of space to house enough calories, protein, etc...for say several months or more.

On the plus side, Progresso is more palatable than Campbell's, but still well short of homemade.

Look for tapioca in bulk at a Mennonite store or an Asian store. I buy it in a Mennonite store for a LOT less than those darn little boxes. I vacuum seal it in jars. I haven't bought it in a while so I can't give you a current price.

Yes
Same here. They always were my soup of choice when they have sales.
I’d buy a lot in the fall, but not anymore at these prices.
I buy any brand that’s on sale, now.
And make my own to freeze.

Make me sad, too. Seeing things go by the wayside that were constant “companions” for SO long!
I’ve just been overwhelmed with nostalgia about EVERYTHING lately!

Isn’t that weird, how even SOUP is triggering such ennui?

This has to be an inside job, this is NOT the first time this year a meat cargo theft has occurred in that part of Nebraska!
