Bread shortage?
This is the easiest kind of bread you can make. Costs pennies and can get you through these strange times, my family lived off these when the pickings were slim.
Navajo Flatbread:
Makes 6
2 cups flour
1 - 1 1/4cup of lukewarm water
1 table spoon baking soda
1 tsp kosher salt
1 table spoon oil/butter/shortening
Mix dry ingredients together and add most water, mix and add water until it has the consistency of tacky pizza dough.
Knead for a few minutes.
Let rest in greased bowl for 30- 60 minutes.
Divide into 6 pieces and roll out on floured surface thin. (Tortilla thickness)
Hear griddle to 350F.
Cook until golden brown spots and flip, cooking until done.
They can be made ahead and kept under a flour towel or frozen for later use.
Hope this helps.

That's very similar to my tortilla recipe except I don't add baking soda. Mine also don't seem as puffy as the ones in your picture so I wonder if its the baking soda that does that.

It actually looks like the naan bread I used to get while eating at indian restaurants, dotted not feathered.

I was thinking naan bread too. We buy that pretty regularly (used to anyway) from Costco. It's good heated with butter, but our favorite use is for mini pizzas.

Was just checking the weekly ad for the regional grocery chain. Looking better as far as name-brands go over last week. Pork and chicken sale prices reasonable. Not much on sale for red beef except chuck roast and steaks.

The ad was much fewer pages than usual, but you could make a week's meals out of it, plus stock up on some essentials - no problem.

Actually, I would replace the Baking Soda in the recipe for Baking Powder.

I think there was a typo there, because Indian Fry bread Always uses Baking Powder, it's what makes it puffy. V

Ads are meaningless.

Yes, lard is the only way to go!!!
Tried it one time with butter because I didn't have any lard, and was soooo not impressed. Fortunately we do have a tortelleria up in Greeley that makes them with lard and I usually get 6 or 7 dozen to keep in the freezer. Super thin and totally wonderful, but they just don't really deliver down to Denver that much.

Unfortunately since the OGK no longer lives up there I need to rely on a friend to get them for me.

I grew up on the Mexican border, so luckily I've had some good teachers when it comes to making tortillas and other goodies. They keep very well in the freezer, always keep a backup supply for busy times or a quick snack. It's too bad that you can't get them very often. I'm going to try the naan bread recipe you posted as soon as I can, if my daughter doesn't get to it first. LOL. Thanks for posting it.

In the UK the rationing during and after WW2 lasted 14 years. It didn't stop until about 1955. How applicable that is to this situation is unknown at this time but I suggest people need to be ready to have "holes" in inventory for some time to come. Not because we can't get things up and running but because of political misadventure where we aren't allowed to get things back up and running.

This is from England...WW2 ration list.

Those photos are terrifying - not being able to just walk into a big store and pick up almost everything you need, makes me think of old Gary North and not living near a 7-11. Too many people in a small area, with nothing to buy.

Add to the virus panic buying, the fact that farmers soon may not get the workers they need (or weather), nor seeds/fertilizer etc, harvesters, truckers, processors, packers, more truckers, store workers...... I need to go out and buy more stuff - it is better than money right now.

Seniors hours don't apply for weekends - just almost had a panic as it said CLOSED Sat & Sun.....shows 8-8 for regular hours.

THIS! I’ve use this many times and it’s so much better than store bought. Just make sure to let the dough rest under a towel for about 20 minutes before you roll them out or they will spring right back.

OK, will try it. Thanks for the tip, xtreme_right.

I'm west of Indianapolis.

I usually do my grocery shopping on Tuesday, which was a mistake since our Gov announced our Do Not Drive on Monday afternoon for Wednesday. I went to Walgreen's on Mon and they were out of the store brand acetaminophen that I prefer to use. I needed some Cool Whip (didn't have) but they did have 10-12 cans of Reddi Wip. They were completely when I went back the next day. Our Walmart Market was also out of it. The cashier told me they had been stocked really well on almost everything until the announcement and that Tues evening was chaotic.

I had no idea that Reddi Wip was such a hot commodity.
Some people have a lot of time on their hands. How was the stock of lime jello?

Don't know if it has been mentioned. In tn the food stamp cards load starting on the 1st but get spaced out by social security numbers and run all the way to the 16th I think it was. More load every 3 or 4 days.

If you have not considered this, today is the end of the month.

I expect shortages and problems for the upcoming weeks personally. Best to be glad you were pessimistic than to be optimistic and have issues.

I am over here in the pessimists pessimistic corner. Extra pessimism please.

Yep. I thought of it, but I'm sure the stores have, too. Best thing is, there's a limit to how much the food stamp crowd can purchase. Should not be much over normal, and well...there will be a run on pizza rolls and tater tots, but I seriously doubt a strain on flour, oil, rice, canned peas and SPAM. ;)

Owner's wife came in yesterday with a FULL load of groceries. Owner helped her unload.

"Where's my potato chips" Owner said.

"Funny - do your own shopping cardiac survivor."

"No toilet paper?"

"Nope - sold out - bare shelves the whole row."

So it would seem for now TP is still in short supply.

I think Owner's ok with that. The "one-holer" exists and is rarely used - but it is there - along with the 1960s era Sears-Roebuck catalog half gone.

Went out for the senior shopping this morning. Ohio should be peaking here shortly so I thought I would get a few more supplies in. Went to Rural King for feed, nothing new there, not busy. Went on to Aldi's, they had everything stocked except for TP and paper towels, that aisle was bare.

I made a quick run to our local Kroger at 7 this morning and was pleasantly surprised. There was a good assortment of meats, I got a 4pack of tp, canned goods were picked over but still plenty, produce was well stocked. I didn't check out the freezer section. I got everything on my list. It wasn't overcrowded and the customers and the employees were all polite and friendly. A couple of customers had on face masks, but most didn't.

I heard this but haven't found anything about it, that some of the Grocery chains are going on strike. Has anyone else heard this? This could be a total mess if this goes in a domino effect.

No. It’s the “Instacart” shopping service people that want to strike for hazard pay.

I have actually heard..... (can't confirm 110%), that Amazon's food service, warehouse, (food?) and a couple of grocery store chains have demanded "hazard pay" and threaten to walk..... not sure if they all quality as grocery.

Went to Walmart at 6 am for Senior shopping hour. Store wasn't busy, I had most of the aisles all to myself. All shelves fully stocked. Plenty of flour and baking products. Dairy dept fully stocked. Deli was opened. TP was limited to one big package per shopper. The only brand was Angel Soft and Great Value. I got everything on my list and out by 6:30. I didn't notice any price hikes.

Good point! Get out now if you need something.

Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) in Wisconsin is distributed on four days, spaced out during the first two weeks of the month.
