Big score for me today at the local (West Memphis) mom and pop grocery. They had Hormel tamales on sale in their ad that started today. First time I've seen them since this all started. I grabbed 24 cans and there was still lots on the shelf.
I keep seeing talk on this thread of Hormel tamales. I haven’t had them in years and had forgotten that as an option for canned meat. I just checked and my two local H‑E‑Bs don’t have any but several Dollar Generals in the area do for $1.85 a can. Just added it to my list.

Will have to get a can, even though it goes against everything I know about tamales, spoiled because they are so easy to get here. Even learned how to make them years ago.

All this talk of tamales just reminded me of a story my dad told us when we were little.

When he was a kid in SW Oklahoma, they had a dog who LOVED tamales. They would set one on the floor for him and that dog would chase it all over the kitchen trying to lick the paper off of it. He'd finally get so desperate to eat his tamale that he'd just go ahead and eat it, paper and all!

I had not thought of this in probably fifty years.

I make my own, but for this dip recipe we use only the Hormel canned ones really work (I've tried it both ways). Which reminds me, come fall I need to make more pork ones since pork seems to be the only thing cheap anymore. Unless I do the chicken ones with the dried hot green chili powder (both in the masa and the filling).

Have you heard of using filler for The bottom half of pots? It keeps the weight down, plus you don’t have to buy so much dirt. For large pots, qt soda bottles work well. That’s the only one I remember off the top of my head. I know there’s others, just google.

I use wood chips I get from the tree guys to put in the bottom 10 inches or so of my barrels before topping off with a potting mix. The wood chips hold moisture and for most plants the roots don't make it down to that level. But no matter what you grow in barrels the dirt mix does dry out and you need to keep them watered and fertilized.

I've never eaten a tamale, and for some reason canned tamales sound as unappetizing as canned asparagus. Bleck!

Home made are the ones to die for - the canned not so much. Boy, are you missing out on the crème de la creme of Mexican cuisine! But, to some they are an acquired taste. Worked with a Jewish kid and at our Thanksgiving potluck someone brought tamales - he wanted to know if you ate the corn husks too! We told him no, and showed him how to eat them properly. Got a good chuckle out of it afterwards and no, no one told him they were pork to boot!

We all loved them as kids until we got old enough to read labels. They made a good meal with cottage and a big hunk of homemade dill pickle on the side. I think the term "mystery meat" was invented for tamales.

For some reason Mom just stopped fixing them for meals. Maybe she started reading the labels, too!

Try the tamales wrapped in banana leaves. Very moist and tender

I use the bags of styrofoam peanuts that come in the packages I get.

It makes the pots lighter, has good drainage and I don't have to use so much soil in the pots! V

When my sister moved to Maui, she couldn't find any corn husks for making her tamales, so she used some banana leaves from her backyard and she likes them Much better! V
Central American tamales are made with banana leaves. The Panamanians make them that way and add sugar to the masa as well so they’re just a bit sweet. Different from the spicy Mexican tamales.

John, I’m sure you are correct. First off, bidets have been around forever and are actually healthier for people and the environment (no trees killed). A small towel to
dry off’ would be all that’s necessary.

When I had little babies, I didn’t want to use disposable diaper wipes so i made my own from a lightweight bath towel. I cut it in “diaper-wipe” sized pieces and stitched the edges. The used wipe went into the diaper pail to soak along with the dirty diaper. They all got washed together and reused.

Adults can (and do) do the same thing. Flannel is very soft and makes an ideal fabric for this use.

Dollar general had only 20% of all paper products. ( toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, and paper plates). normally the entire back is stocked full and it's mostly empty space. Considering somebody wiped out the Rite-Aid a couple days ago, I have to assume that someone in my town is stocking up.

Earlier this week, DH and I went shopping. at both Joanns and Hobby Lobby, there were no sewing machines and very few notions. Still quite a bit of fabric, but throughout both stores, there were big empty spaces.

All I can say about that video is that apparently Hormel has found their target customer :D

I am still buying Wolf chili/no beans however.

How DO you eat tamales? Never had one!

Take the Hormel tamales and unwrap them. Put them in an oven proof dish (single layer). Add the sauce from the can and cover with shredded cheese. Sprinkle some chopped cilantro over them and place in a 350 degree oven until hot and the cheese melts. Not as good as homemade but still very good.

Oh not to be fooled- I LOVE homemade tamales! Usually during the holidays I send cookies to my coworkers in Mexico and they send me a few dozen beef, chicken, and pork. WOW!! Sooo delicious. Not sure I will get any this year. :shk:

Wal-Mart today. VERY noticeable gaps on canned food aisle. And by gaps I mean 5-10 foot blocks with nothing at all. Saw a couple of strange brands I’ve never seen before. Mostly Great Value brand though. Only beans, peas, carrots & potatoes. Fruit was mostly pineapple & mandarins.

lots of rice, but. This is rice country

if you need it...get it. Soon.

Neither here nor there.
Just got back from my local Fareway, the only true holes we saw were bread and soup. The meat counter was the way it was back in February before all of this craziness started. No canned tamales but there is a spot on the shelf for them.

Very true. Usually have a group do it. An all day event with an empty freezer needed. But the venison ones are so good

This^^^ I would make a batch every couple of years around Christmas, until we got an Abelardos here in town and nothing compares to their tamales! I've yet to get a dud from that place, and they're $2 a piece and are huge!
