The local rite aid was overflowing with paper products 2 weeks ago. Yesterday it was gutted with signs apologizing for lack of product and limits on how many can be purchased.

What do people grab toilet paper as their first prep?

At the risk of thread drift.... does anyone here use "media crema"? (shelf stable table cream)

AND is it still available these days?

I just watched a YouTube about food storage, and this product was mentioned.
I am intrigued.
IT IS VERY GOOD IN COFFEE...............ANYWHERE YOU CAN NOT KEEP FOOD COLD, SO DO NOT HAVE HALF-HALF OR MILK
IF YOU HAVE NOTHING ELSE............AND LIKE CREAM IN YOUR COFFEE...................IT IS GREAT
IT HAS A SHORT SHELF LIFE, AS ALL MILK, JUST A YEAR OR SO
IF YOU STORE CANS, OF ANY MILK, SHAKE AND INVERT ONCE A MONTH

WHEN YOU OPEN IT UP,,,,,,,,,,,MIX IT UP LIKE A CAN OF PAINT

Because when you run out of TP, it is a stroke-inducing, life-altering event. The panic that sets in is like being a rat in a maze with no way out. There you are, on the potty, and you've just had a massive ejection of bowl-coating colon blow due to having eaten too many Twinkies on top of anchovy-laden pizza the night before............ and there are two sheets of TP left. What can you do? It's appalling !!! Slowly it dawns on you just how trapped you are, and there's nobody else home to help you out of the situation. The shock alone could kill ya........

I think rationing May be starting again because I needed a gallon of milk, but didn’t want to deal with Kroger at 9am. We have a Turkey Hill store, right next door to Kroger (they’re the same people, essentially and you use your Kroger card yada yada)
Anyway, it’s faster getting in and out.

No more gallon sizes are offered there and they now have a one, half gallon limit “due to covid19” blah blah. I was in no mood for that crap so just took my little half gallon and face mask, and stomped out.

DH was looking for some seeds to plant now - nothing available locally, and he said Burpee-type sites were out as well. I’m not sure what other websites he checked.

Do you have an online source for late summer seeds?
Did you check BW Capps over the Dillingham St. bridge to the left in Ala.

I should have been more specific. I've bought many garden seeds on Etsy over the years. Just put in seeds on the search.
I've never gotten seeds there but I'm going to check it out, thanks. I'd much rather not drive anywhere I don't have to.

I did a run to Kroger for a few things. Almost everything seemed pretty well stocked. They even had a few cans of Spam! 3 regular Spam and 4 turkey Spam. I haven't seen any spam for a month or more. I can't eat the stuff but hopefully some Spam fans will find it.

'Due to the unprecedented Covid 19 crisis we no longer offer exchanges or returns. All sales final." On groceries.
Made sure to check everything thoroughly before putting it in my cart. No dents etc. Means I have to handle things more too.
I get they don't want to handle the goods that customers return, but what a racket.

This morning I did a whirlwind shopping trip in Bryan/College Station, an HEB, Walgreen's, Aldi, and Kroger. It was early enough that it wasn't very crowded at any of the stores, but there are holes to be sure.

HEB was fine on just about everything, some limits in place for disinfecting wipes, but otherwise they looked really good. Canned food was getting thin - canned fruit & vegs, soup, canned meats. No canned peaches again, limited fruit otherwise but there seemed a good supply of canned pineapple. Vegetables getting low, but there was some supply of everything that I saw. Canned soup section seems to be shrinking more and more. Canned meat - if you see it and it's on your list, don't put it off...not much left.

Aldi's was low on a lot of canned items, but they did have some canned peaches. I'm not too familiar with Aldi's, and it's a small store at this location.

Kroger was worse than HEB. Canned aisles getting hit, canned fruit is spaced way out so it looks like a lot of stock, but mostly it was canned pineapple.

One thing that was on my list that is in very, very short supply with a lot of holes, was vitamins - across the board at HEB, Kroger, and Walgreen's. It wasn't just the D3, but pretty much all vitamins. I was looking to top off one category and in the gummy type, and it just wasn't happening. I could order from Amazon, but gummy vitamins at this time of year in Texas will arrive in a gooey blob. Planning on a Costco run this week or next, so I'll try then. Thankfully, we have a small bottle in reserve, so I have some time.

Anyone needing to be thinking about getting more vitamins needs to start looking every trip....ditto for any canned items.

TxGal, I've shopped Aldi for many years and I've always found their products equal to any name brand or major store brand. That's everything not just canned goods.

There is no grocery store in town where I live but we do have a Dollar General. Yesterday I went there for a half gallon of milk and it was $2,85 which is way more than it was (1) before the grocery store closed in November and (2) more than the local quick mart and (3) up around 30¢ since I last shopped. Can you say price gouging? BTW Aldi's price for a half gallon is regularly $1.29.

Always be checking the dates on those cans of veggies and fruit!

I was over at the Safeway in North Bend, Wa. and wanted to get some canned stuff and for one example, the Glory brand collard greens expiration date was May 2020 and they're still selling outdated food.

The only other place I've seen this problem is at the Safeway in Kapa'a, Kauai, HI., lots of things past their expiration date there. V

I've seen mayo expired or about to at Dollar General, and some that was way past exp. date at the big cost-plus-ten percent box store.

I store any mayo I buy in the fridge, no matter how long I'll have it before I open it. Especially since I noticed it tends to go bad after they started using plastic containers. I NEVER had mayo go bad in a glass jar, no matter how far past it's exp. date it was.

We might've been passing ships yesterday! I had Aldi on my list of 'stops', but was too pooped and it was starting to really rain so decided to put it off until later in the week. We probably shopped at different HEB stores yesterday, although I think I know which one you probably hit when here in town. I like the one on Villa Maria because it's a bigger store with more variety but the one that's handier for me is closer to campus and is usually less busy and it's easier to get in and out. I like the 'new' Kroger at Longmire and Rock Prairie, too. There's a brand new HEB I've not set foot in yet near the 'corner' of Welborn and Harvey Mitchell Parkway (FM 2818) that's bigger and nice, so says my good friend. Have been meaning to take a look-see for myself, just haven't yet.

ANYWAY... HEB for me today was pretty well stocked. Some sections were a little thin, but there was product being put out by the stockers as we shopped. Had nice looking chuck roasts for $2.77/lb, which was my main reason for going today. I've always preferred the HEB meat and seafood departments. I mostly shop HEB because I like it better and their prices are usually better than Kroger (unless Kroger is running a loss leader sale or similar). I've not noticed many price increases since the first of the year with the exception of fresh meat prices being volatile.

We also decided to stop in at one of the Dollar General stores in Bryan. It had been quite a while since I'd looked at their grocery offerings and I was very pleasantly surprised, not just that they were stocked to the max, but with the variety and prices. No limits on anything. Green beans, their store brand, 50 cents a can, good quality, no limit. Green beans are one of the vegetables that is usually thinner at both HEB/Kroger. Plenty of canned meat and fish, good variety of canned soups and chili, etc. Plenty of tomato products, condiments, etc. The canned fruit section didn't have as wide of a variety as HEB or Kroger, but they had applesauce, peaches, pears, fruit cocktail, cranberry sauce, etc. Paper stuff was plentiful, even TP, no limits. For the basics, they were great. Not sure if it was a fluke, but am going to make a point of stopping in more often.

As far as Aldi... I love that store chain. I remember when their slogan was "The Stock-Up Store." Yes, the one in Bryan is one of their smaller ones, but for pantry basics they're still as good as when I started shopping them in the early 1980's. Their selection of cheese and deli type meats is great and we've always enjoyed that they carry many German foods. At Christmas time they have THE most delicious stollen I've ever had in my life, OMG. Their chocolates are very good. Have not tried their wine, but have heard many people rave about them. Over the years only a handful of items I was not thrilled with. This location can get picked over pretty quick, the best time to shop is usually in the morning right after they open. I've been hearing rumors for the last year that they're trying to secure a location in CS, too.

We probably did! I was down at Villa Maria, it's closest to St. Joseph's when DH is there for his appts. I have been down to the newest HEB, I think. Down past the College Station hospital on Rock Prairie, out a ways. If so, it is a beautiful store and not too crowded. Small world :-)

Made a trip to a cental Ohio Kroger yesterday. No disinfecting wipes, hand soap almost gone. TP very thin but got a big package of the store brand. Beef prices are coming down a little but chicken still very pricey. Eggs were .89/dozen. Found Campbell's Paw Patrol soup which my little boy loves, been very hard to find the last couple months. Everything was well stocked for the most part and I didn't see any limits posted. I like to check the marked down bakery rack for specialty breads, a loaf that went for .99 last month was priced at 1.75 and that was the clearance price.

Came home and had beer and ice cream for dinner. Grocery shopping with a small child is stressful under ideal circumstances, but store trips now are ridiculously depressing and mentally draining.

It IS, isn't it? Love it :)

The store you're thinking of has been open for a couple of years now. I've been to that store exactly one time. It was in late fall and my regular store was literally mobbed.. more people there than I had ever seen before (or since). Can't remember if there was a game in town or not but it was crazy and NO parking spots available. I decided to drive out to the then new one. As I was standing in line waiting to check out I heard the women behind me saying stuff like, "I'm sure they'll call off school tomorrow" to another woman... Sleet and ice met me as I drove home, traffic was a real mess. It hadn't been in the forecast in the morning and I'd been running errands a good bit of the day so had no clue. Lordy! Yes, school was called off the next day. I did like the store, but I haven't been back mostly because it's really far out of my way and I don't have any other business out that way.

If you take Business 6 (Texas Avenue) south until you get to the intersection of Texas and Harvey Mitchell (FM 2818) and turn right (west) at the light right before the Walmart, you'll go a couple miles and it's on the south side of 2818. Not as far out in the boonies as the one you're talking about (although that whole area is really growing and expanding big time).

Thanks! I'll definitely check out that newer store! I really appreciate the directions :-)

Went to Harp's Grocery and to Dollar General early this morning (6 AM). They both seemed a little better stocked than the last couple of times I was there. My list was short but I found everything I was looking for.

I got ten bags of the cheapo fill dirt for the bottoms of my ten new half-barrel containers and also paid for ten more bags of Miracle-Gro for blending into the top half of the containers. Got unloaded quickly and hurried back to pick up the Miracle-Gro before the rain hit and it started sprinkling on my way back home. It's been sprinkling intermittently ever since, but so far, nothing like a real rain.

I accidentally broke my ratchet driver when I was hammering nails out of some old lumber the other day and there was no replacement at the feed/hardware store. The guy I usually deal with was there when I went in the second time, and he said he'll see if he can find something he can order for me so I don't have to go all the way to our big town.

All the stores I go to in my little tiny town sure do treat me nice!

Have you heard of using filler for The bottom half of pots? It keeps the weight down, plus you don’t have to buy so much dirt. For large pots, qt soda bottles work well. That’s the only one I remember off the top of my head. I know there’s others, just google.

I used filler in all of the containers in my greenhouse. Now, of the forty containers in there, I have removed the fillers from all but nine of them. I found that the dirt dries out faster with fillers, so I'd rather have dirt of any kind. This cheap fill dirt seems to be pretty sandy, so I mix some kitty litter into it before I put the good soil in the top half of the container.

What I bought today will give me enough of everything to fill my new containers, plus finish changing out the dirt in the remaining greenhouse containers and also topping off a few here and there which have settled more than I was expecting.

Big score for me today at the local (West Memphis) mom and pop grocery. They had Hormel tamales on sale in their ad that started today. First time I've seen them since this all started. I grabbed 24 cans and there was still lots on the shelf.

In general this store was very well stocked everywhere but the cleaning supply aisle. No wipes. I even got a free loaf of bread with my $20 purchase.

In contrast, the Kroger and Walmart look like they have been raided and prices have gone up enough that the mom and pop grocery are now competitive.

We have not seen Hormel Tamales for 3 months. It is a good thing we are stocked. They are telling us they will get more sometime in August. AUGUST!!! What are we some province in Mexico for God's sake!!!!!

Barry Natchitoches, who lives in Memphis, was looking for tamales, hope he's found some.

Just don't plant any of those FREE Chinese seeds, people are receiving in the mail! On the customs form it says 'EARRINGS' but inside are multiple packs of seeds. The .gov says don't plant-don't touch! Give them to your county extension office to report.
