So happy for you, it sounds as if you've had access to it for a while. I've never seen it, so stock up!! I'm jelly! love me beef!/protein options, esp. shelf-stable!

Thank you again!!

Thanks 1eagle, though truthfully, not so long. We recently stumbled onto a #10 can (which IS in broth) at a restaurant supply store and bought it without knowing its quality. When we found the shelf stable pack at Costco we decided to taste-test that instead of opening the large can (they’re the same brand). So, I’ve been running it through the paces, trying it every way I can think of to see if we like it. Well, we love it! So we’ve been back to ‘that’ Costco several times to pick up more bags while they’re still available.

I’m looking forward to try more recipes using ingredients solely from our preps. This stuff is the ultimate prepper protein package. And it’s beef! It’s easy to find chicken and tuna so beef is a treat, right?! I wonder if it’s available on line?? Maybe take a look for your area??

It’s still very hot here (~100 degrees) so I’m not into baking or making heavy meals yet. That stroganoff sauce is the heaviest thing I’ve made since last winter! However, as the temps dip I’ll a little more experimenting.

There's a thread in Granny's Kitchen here on what to do with canned beef.

Where in Costco can I find the shelf stable bag of beef?

Would it be in the area they have the canned chicken? V

Yesterday it was next to chicken today what was left was on top of the pork chilata mentioned above, along the side wall. Went back to get more because it tasted good.....yesterday there was a pallet today there was 4 cases left. Only complaint was 3lbs is Alot to open for the two if us. I plan on freezing it in smaller packages once I open the big package

The other day, My Kroger store had that spaghetti sauce that comes IN MASON JARS.
I never bought it before because it was more expensive than the other sauces.
The other day it was on sale and it was only $.25 more than the other brands.
SO, I thought I cant get the jars for a quarter elsewhere, so I bought a dozen mason jars of spaghetti sauce!
I've tried using classico jars twice, one jar each time mixed in with canning jars, in the pressure canner. Both broke. I have not tried them in a water bath application though. If you're planning on pressure canning with them I highly recommend trying it before it becomes a matter of life and death. YMMV

They're not recommended for use in the pressure canner but they work well for hot water bath canning.

I can vouch for that non-recomendation. Have you used them for water bath? We LOVE their Alfredo sauce, but after losing two jars worth of green beans I've just been pitching the jars. Might give them a try in the water bath if a reliable source, like you, can tell me first hand that they actually hold up.

I've used them along with glass mayo jars lots of times, and I've never had one break. Water bath canning only.

I sure wish that Sam's would carry that! We don't have a Costco anywhere close. I wonder how this beef compares to the Keystone shredded beef in cans?

Our nearest costco is a good 45 minutes or more from my place, got a Sam's Club here in town wish they'd carry stuff other than canned chicken. I should see what the super HyVee on the west side of town has for canned meats. That said I did can up a LOT of chicken and beef in the last 12 months, just enjoyed a batch of homemade chicken salad on some italian bread.

The nearest Costco to me is over a hour away in Memphis. We have a Sam's in town, though. I've got several cans of the Keystone canned shredded beef, and was wondering how it compared to this in a bag, since I can't get any? Also, wondering if the cost is similar? Our Sam's Club only carries the canned chicken, too. I've got a ton of that, but having more shelf stable ground or shredded beef would be a nice addition.

The Sam's club in Des Moines on 63rd street I think it is carries canned turkey, canned beef, and canned pork. I'm not sure why the one here locally doesn't carry those items, I'd definitely buy the canned turkey.

I've never seen any of those at our Sam's, either. Only canned chicken breasts. Our local Walmart did carry canned BBQ pork that was very good, but they have stopped. Don't know if it's a shortage issue, or if the company went out of business. I'd love to have more cans of that in the pantry, too.

OK, with three positive reports I'll go back to saving them and try them for water bath. Thank you all for your replies.

Thanks for the heads up!
That may be because after they are filled they, (unlike new, empty canning jars) are banged around in the supermarket with the grocery stocking staff and customers, and get banged in the cart with no protection like the empty canning jars have.

I haven’t been able to find Keystone around here. Is it carried only at Walmart’s or do other retailers sell it too?

The Costco beef in a bag may be available on line to be shipped—if you know someone with a Costco membership.

OR, maybe Sampco’s website would list the retailers that carry their products?? :shr: Amazon??
We have stores called Chef’s Store that carry Sampco products as well.

Yes, you are correct. I think they are ok for water bath, but not pressure. At the current time, I am using mine for vac sealed dry storage.

By the way, check your local Publix is you live in "Publixland." This week, Wednesday is last day, there is a BOGO on Classico sauce 24-oz jar. I like to keep it handy both in the jars I find at Publix as well as the larger jar at Sam's Club.

Last week, I found genuine cases of 16 oz Ball canning jars at a local grocery store that was locally owned until a few months ago. The labels on the case wrapping indicated that these jars had been in storage for awhile, as they had the name of the OLD grocery store owners on it, rather than the new chain that now operates the store.

Yesterday (Sunday) I was in WalMart in suburban Memphis and found 6 cases of genuine Ball 32 ounce jars, and about 6 boxes of generic, regular sized, flat lids (no rings, just packs of 12 flat lids). They wanted $1.49 for the box of flat lids.

I did not buy any quart sized jars because I don't can anything bigger than a pint jar. That is just my personal preference.

But I did buy 2 of the boxes of flat lids.

I didn't need more than that because - bless my beautiful wife's heart - she loaded up on extra flat lids back a few years ago, when she was still the canning person in the family. I found 14 unopened boxes of flat lids (with 12 flat lids per box) packed away with her canning supplies when I finally began to do my own canning earlier this year. Plus, she had stored away 4 unopened boxes of Kerr jars back before she got sick, too. Of course, I used all of those jars she stored away back during the summer canning season. When the canning jar shortage hit this summer, I was mighty glad my wife stored away extra jars and lids.

Anyway, if you are still looking -- keep checking Wal Mart out. It seems that some of the stores have a few canning supplies dribbling in from time to time.

That was a heck of a good price on those lids, too! Prices have been climbing steadily, but when the regular mouth lids reached over 20 cents each (in boxes of 12) it started to become an actual concern. I bought a case of sleeves of lids this spring, for a little over 17 cents each including shipping. But I'm saving every lid I'm able to remove without deforming, just in case.

I'm down to only using 3-400 lids a year... when we were feeding 4 teens, 1200-1500 jars per year was normal.

Our local Walmart doesn't carry it in their store. We've always been able to get it from them online, though. I don't know about anyone else carrying it.

Since there is no Costco around, we don't know anyone who has a membership there.

Keystone makes very good quality products, so we'll just keep ordering from them.

I see small amounts on the shelf at Kroger but nothing like in the amounts most heavy duty ambers use. But at least it’s something!

Yes, Vessie, in the canned goods area. Of course Costco likes to move things around a lot but it should still be easy to find.
Thank you!!!

I will be giving a report of the Costco on Kauai as soon as I get there.

Hopefully, they'll have it here too! Mahalos! V

This article basically says that almost all ships and shipping containers are presently booked, and that a lot of US retailers are, or will be, low on inventory.

And if one were intrepid enough to go over to Market to Market and read this past Friday's report one will see that shortages are global at this point, drought, floods, early snow, horrible storms with extreme winds, and locusts, have destroyed most of the nations crops. I posted the transcript on one of the other threads yesterday.
