Just ran thru the local Fred Meyer and saw several shortages, but there was a big restocking crew working; they just did a big rearrangement of store layout, as FM does every few years.

Space. The aisles are noticeably wider, there are a lot of huge vacant spaces, where entire aisles have been replaced with pretty much nothing. As well, the options are fewer. I’ll have to go back tomorrow and see just how stocked they are after today. But it is pretty remarkable how much empty space is there now. It’s a big store.

Been off all week. Just went to Kroger we always go to. Was shocked at the bare shelves. These are just a couple isles. There were a number like this. Noticeably canned goods, dry pasta etc. Canned soup almost nothing. What they did have was moved to the front of the shelves and not much behind it. Bottled water almost out again.

Wow that's crazy!! I haven't been inside a store in weeks (other than 99 sent store). I always do curbside and so far they've had everything I need.

ETA I have noticed the 24 pack of Kroger water has not been available or on sale. It's almost always 2/$5 but I have seen any the last few times I've ordered. I've been getting a different brand

I just went to another mobile food pantry this morning, and they gave me 4 more pounds of the shelled walnuts, which now makes it 20 pounds, minus those I have already eaten or put in my wife’s big birthday brownie. (She won’t eat walnuts straight, but loves them in homemade brownies.)

I definitely need ideas on how to preserve some of these nuts, but I don’t want to hijack this thread.

So I am going to head over to Granny’s Kitchen, and put out an inquiry for ideas on how to preserve my stash of nuts.

If you have ideas on what I can do, would you be kind enough to post your suggestions over there?

Please bear in mind that I am not an experienced cook or canner like alot of you. You all probably know how to do alot of things I don’t yet know how to do.

Thank you in advance.
Store shelled nuts in an airtight container in the freezer....they will last for years

IN A "not auto defrost freezer" they , anything, will store longer and better than in a ref-freezer.

Went to the HEB in Buda, just south of Austin. Bread thin, being purchased faster than it could be stocked. Gatorade and Powerade both decimated. Capri Sun juice boxes gone. Flour and sugar were available, but thinly stocked. Everything else looked pretty good.

My wife and I believe that people sense something is about to happen, and they're stocking up.

Smith's in NE NV Today looked about the same as last week. Absolutely zero evidence of anyone prepping. There was very little bottled water, more Gatorade than last week--shelves were probably 60% full, there were no gallons of white vinegar, and of course, no canning lids. A few people were wearing masks--the mask mandate goes into effect tomorrow. I somewhat suspect it will be largely ignored, but I'll have to wait until next week to find out for sure.

Spoke with two manager at different stores about the bottled water shortages. Both said store brand "purified" waters are available but all the "bottled at the source" type were gone with no idea when they wouLd be resupplied. Quessing that the plastic shortages predicted after the Texas freeze was to blame.

I am starting to see limited inventory of the hair care/shampoo bottles and laundry soaps.

We've not received any Gatorade with our soda order for the last two weeks. They told us, they had none and Walmart was buying it all. (Concessions/state park)

I give up.
Went shopping today in FL. Store seemed to have everything. They had something new for $1/box -- Cheetos Mac & Cheese. 3 kinds, my son got a cheesy cheesy and a Jalapeno cheesy, but resisted the red hot cheesy. LOL. I can't wait.

Coffee sales are back -- picked up a couple cans (Folgers and store brand), and a small package of Hazelnut for me. They had severely pretty pies on sale for $3.99 but I resisted -- apple, strawberry, blueberry, caramel apple, pecan. Um.... maybe I should go back, eh? LOL. Betty Crocker cake mix on sale $1/box; again I resisted. Got a pound of pretty Hormel bacon though, $4 off, so I paid $5.99. Worth it. Money off on produce -- got cole slaw, peppers, cucumbers, onions, tomatoes.

It was a good trip.

Real uptick in prices this past week especially in produce. Little 9 ounce box of fresh spinach leaves for salad $3.50 last week was $4.44 today. Mushrooms up 25% and a pint of grape tomatoes for the salad several varieties and all over 4$. And quality has really taken a hit. I love onions but the white and yellow onions lately the outer layers are soft and rotting. Have to peel away over a third of the onion to get to usable onion. This isn’t a one off and it’s been continual. Have went with red onions, not my favorite but it seems to take longer for them to turn.

I'll second that on the white and yellow onions. Been buying the same 5 pound bag every couple weeks for over year. Last few bags 2-3 onions need that kind of work because of black rot.
The bag I bought last week, the onions are smaller, I didn't see anything to indicate blackness, but they were very pale and didn't seem to have much peel on them.

At the Family Dollar store (SE MI) yesterday, I found several cans of Margaret Holmes Tomatoes, Corn, and Okra. Shelf price sticker read, "$1.25". I thought it was a bit high, but snagged several cans, 'cause I LIKE THIS STUFF! At checkout, they rang up at $1.00. Was going to go back for more, but found out Wally online had 'em for $.98/can. Ordered a bunch for delivery. I love to add lots of okra from my garden to the pot.

Just got home from the local WM (western OK 10k pop) I did a major grocery run. Largest one I've done in some time. Noticed quite a quite empty/low spots on the shelves. This was especially true in canned goods, meat wasn't bad. I worked at that store for about six years (left about 1.5 years ago) this isn't the worst I've seen the store but it had been trending toward less availability for the last two months at least. Part of the reason I shopped so heavy was wanting to make sure to deepen the pantry while I know I could.

I get Margaret Holmes Tomatoes and Okra (no corn). Always try to keep a case of that on hand. Gooood stuff. :)

My walmart trips are getting more and more expensive, got to cut that back. And damn if I don't have another list started for walmart.

Yesterday I noticed there was no hydrogen peroxide, except for a couple of small spray bottles, I got one, I use it to sanitize my kitchen counters. I'd gotten a couple of bottles recently to add to my stash, so I'm good on that. There were two bottles of rubbing alcohol, the price was 2.18 a bottle that use to be under a dollar. I got both bottles.

I have older bottles of hydrogen peroxide and I use that on my kitchen counters too, works just fine.

Their seasoned cabbage is also great. We also like the lima beans when I don't have time to fix them myself from dry.

Absolutely, the cabbage is good. I haven't seen any dry green limas in a long time. I used to buy those. I'm not too crazy about the plain white dry limas. I have a few jugs of them put away, though.

The baby green ones are the ones we love and I try to keep a good stock of those because Ham & Limas are one of my husband's absolute favorite meals. But the dry ones are harder to find than they used to be. I can get frozen baby green limas pretty much every trip to the store (and I do have those in bulk). The frozen ones are really good, Pictsweet brand.

I like the Pictsweet brand, too. If my freezers weren't full, I'd have room for more frozen veggies. I can't find the dried version of green limas anywhere. I use to get them at Walmart. I wonder if I could order them online? I'll check when I make out my next order. I don't know why I haven't thought of that sooner.

I was crazed about green limas a couple of years ago, initially I had to go to a couple of different walmarts in other towns to find them and then my closest w/m had them again. You can order from w/m on line but they are pricey.

Quick supper made from pantry ingredients. I use fresh if I have them, but have always kept freeze dried or dehydrated on hand.

(Amounts depend on how much you need to make, can easily adjust. Fly by the seat of yer pants kind of thing.)

1 or two cans Margaret Holmes Tomatoes and Okra
1 or two cans Bumblebee (or any other brand) Tiny Shrimp, undrained
freeze dried or dehydrated celery, amount to suit your taste
freeze dried or dehydrated green pepper, amount to suit your taste
freeze dried or dehydrated minced or chopped onion, amount to suit your taste
Old Bay seasoning, to taste
splash of Worcestershire, if desired
shake or two of red pepper flakes, if desired
1 can chicken, undrained and broken up in chunks, if desired
1 can diced potatoes or equivalent, if desired or need to stretch to feed more people
Can throw in cooked rice (or could even use Minute rice if you have it on hand) if you need to feed more people

Bring to boil, turn down and simmer for ~10 - 15 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning.
