One can get good results from saving and planting the bottom inch of green onions/scallions, which come with roots, the white part and green tops. A sunny windowsill will do, don't even need lights. Same for the bottom inch or so of celery- it will sprout, and send down roots.

Just thought I’d mention my trip, today, to one of the grocery stores in my town...not a chain store, has a very nice health food section with a large variety of products, as well.

It looked quite well stocked, except for being a little low on some produce...I went in the early afternoon. Broccoli was quite low, so was cauliflower, no cukes, few zucchini. Only 4 pkgs. left of fresh raspberries on sale ( I took 2 of those.) Other than that, which is unusual for that store, plenty of the rest of the produce.

I was amazed at the jump in fresh onion prices from last week, though.

In case this might interest some of you, there is a cereal product that is ground brown rice....I can’t recall if it is Bob’s or a similar one. Since I have a Vitamix, I grind the brown rice from the health food section....it’s a lot cheaper than buying the finished product. Cooked brown rice is very good with brown sugar and milk for breakfast. Nutritious, too.

That was really helpful...reading about the second store person confiding the need to buy what you need, now, because of Biden’s plan to shut things down for 100 days! I would guess that even the best prepared of us can think of items we still should be getting.....time to take inventory,
friends...we may not have much time. (If Trump stays, that won’t stop the shortages.....there still are the closed meat plants, many dairy farm closures, ranchers who culled their herds, and farmers losing or plowing their crops under because of various weather problems. Eventually, it’s going to bite us in the butt.

Yesterday, when I called an old friend, I mentioned the importance of stocking up. She lives several states away. She laughed and told me she had only about a day’s worth of food in her pantry...that she drinks a healthful drink for breakfast, eats at the cafeteria where she works (good pay as a nurse instructor) and has a sandwich for supper.

Without being preachy, I tried to let her know food shortages are in our future, but I don’t think it really sank in....sad.

Guess I’ll add to my pets’ stash of foods....they get top quality kibble from the pet store....even in different flavors, as well as frozen ground turkey logs I buy at Meijer.

As an aside, my Chihuahas LOVE fresh sugar snap peas...I cut each pea in a few small PCs., and the dogs go nuts over them......that’s one of the many different fresh veggies they get before their meat supper. Fresh broccoli, Bell peppers, cabbage slaw, chopped up sprouts....are among the many veggies they get and love. (Just thought you doggie owners might like to know what treats you might surprise your pets with if you hadn’t thought of doing it.

Your friend was laughing because she secretly knows that once things get scarce, she'll be at your doorstep and expect you to take care of her. V

Had to go to town to get the license plate renewed for my van, it was "way" expired. And of course, I had to go to walmart. It was after 3 so it was not super crowded. I was surprised to see so many empty spaces. Pizza was almost completely wiped out, very little folgers coffee. I certainly don't need coffee, but I picked up a freeze dried package of Community Coffee and Chickory and it was still the same price as the last two years. Its my favorite but I mix it with folgers to make it go farther.

The cheese section was picked over, although there was TP and PT, but spread out. Spices were picked over, meat section was spread out. Dip section was really picked over.

some of this may be because of New Years and they just haven't got it all restocked yet.

I bought two more cans of crema media to add to my stash and replaced 4 cans of mandarin oranges (no sugar added) and some salad stuff. Haven't had a good salad in a while, gonna try adding some artichoke hearts to it and I also like mandarin oranges in salad, yum yum.

God is good all the time

Same here. We have a 12 by 12 room we have stocked up.

Hallways lined with boxes in our home. Totes under the bed, the desks, kitchen table, and closets. Two freezers with a third empty on standby in case one of the first two craters; both freezers jammed to the gills. Paper and liquids in the garage. We shop to top off and buy things on sale for storage, as I'm expecting inflation to increase in the future.

Went to Baker Creak seeds online this morning to find they temporarily closed the site again due to increased sales and Covid. I didn’t expect that to happen so soon. It closed a couple times in the spring due to a lot of sales
Try Ed Hume seeds.
or, THE DOLLAR STORE where a couple days ago, I just got 100 packets of herb and vegetable seeds FOR 25 cents a pack!

DON’T FORGET!
Especially if you are older....Get a rototiller or some way, other than a shovel And hoe, to prepare your soil for a garden, AND THE GAS AND OIL TO RUN IT!
We, who haven’t grown a garden in years may not still have all the tools we need (in working condition) to again start gardening if the real need to grow our own food arises!
You can hire someone to do the heaviest work, (if you are no longer strong enough to do it) BUT, you need to have the tools, seed, fertilizer and insecticides (if you use them), to employ. ALSO get some diatomatious earth if you dont “do” insecticide, IT IS SO SAFE, YOU CAN EAT IT!

ALSO GO NOW to Lowes, or Home Depot or Walmart, and get those “seed starter boxes”
BECAUSE IN ABOUT ANOTHER THREE WEEKS THEY WILL BE ALL GONE!

ALSO, check craigs list for FREE WINDOWS AND WOOD so you can EASILY make some
”Hotboxes” to put your seedling starts in till spring arrives.

I am glad to see a continuation of the old thread. So much knowledge to be found here.

I appreciate the reminders about the gardening supplies, and the growing tips. I really need to start saving seeds from my produce, never considered it before.

The boy and I will venturing out for an Aldis run later this afternoon, will report back once my blood pressure returns to normal (grocery shopping with a young child is taxing even without all the bonus "pandemic" aspects thrown in)

Your stockpile sounds very much like ours. Not only do I have the 12 x 12 room stocked from floor to ceiling, but every other nook and cranny I have throughout the house, including under the bed, sofa, and every cabinet in my laundry room. Since the pantry room is over flowing, I've started stacking cases in our bedroom against an empty wall. It's almost full. I also have two large chest freezers. One is packed to the brim. The other is almost empty, because I'm in the process of emptying it for defrosting. My outdoor mini barn is packed with paper products and plenty of canning jars, plus all of our camping/survival gear and gardening equipment.

Probably 99% of produce is from hybrid plants, and seeds saved will not breed true. They will grow and probably will produce some sort of harvest, but instead of nice beefsteak tomatoes you may get tiny, sour cherry type tomatoes... it just depends on what genes are expressed.

IF you have lots of time, energy and space, it can be fun to experiment. Even organic growers use mostly hybrids, but if you can find varieties advertised as "heirloom", they shouod be an open pollinated variety, but even they may have been crossed during the growing season.

You can get lucky... years ago, an old family friend brought us sone seeds from a butternut squash he'd bought at the farmers market. To be polite (because I figured it had to be a hybrid) I grew them, and had a great crop of large, uniform, tasty butternut squashes! I've saved seed from them a couple of times, and need to grow it out again this year to freshen my supply.

And there are ways to "breed back" a hybrid to stabilize it as an OP variety, although it takes years.

One place where my advice tends to clash with how most think is that I recommend that at least some of your seed supply should be in reliable hybrids. No, you won't be able to save seeds (true to type) from them, but when talking survival, take one step at a time. First, you have to survive long enough to harvest! Hybrids tend to be "designed" with various desirable traits bred in... resistance to various diseases, high yields, longer production season. The introduction of hybrid seed corn (long before GMOs) DOUBLED the grain yield in a few short years.

So, if you stash some reliable hybrids that grow in your area, at least you'll have food to eat while you are developing your open pollinated varieties and learning how to maximize production from them.

Went to our Sams last night (east coast, Florida). No chicken, except drumsticks and no salmon. Very little beef. Then again, this was at dinner time so may not have had time to restock. The rest of the store looked fine.. Toilet paper was limited to 1 per person still.

Ran errands yesterday, thinking that today was a day to stay home, given pending events in DC. (N MN)

The grocery store was in good shape, their loss leaders for the week were well stocked. They are relying more on store brands, which really doesn't bother me, not being much of a "brand" person. Prices are definitely creeping up on meat - both at the grocery store and at the meat store. Example - the bulk fresh ground (breakfast or Italian) sausage that I used to get for 1.99/lb this week was "on sale" for 2.49. "Cheap" sale beef roasts are now 3.99/lb. Seems to me, the biggest jump has been in pork, which used to be the most economical belly-filler.

Feed and fleet was busy, but well stocked. Haven't seen prices rise there yet for either livestock feed or dog food, but I'm expecting it. (If Biden hands out another $2000, it will be sooner rather than later). No gardening displays up yet - it 's still ice fishing season here. I ordered all the seed I need the first part of December, and it all arrived before Christmas, so the "have to" stuff is covered. Will mention here - if you need to order chicks this spring, you are probably already a bit late.

I'm in Phoenix right now, and I'm having trouble finding distilled water for my humidifier. Both Kroger and Walmart have empty shelves for distilled water in gallon jugs. I'm probably going to have to run my distiller to refill the empties I have, but it's so much cheaper to buy it than run my distiller. BTW, Walmart is offering a "distilled water" gallon jug in their baby food section "with added minerals for taste", which makes it NOT distilled water.

Went to credit union first to deposit a check. It really hit me harder or clearer today. Planned on using ATM, but the sign out front changed. “No Lobby Entry. Entry by appointment only.” Before it was ‘please use Drive Thru and ATM only.’ Seemed like a little harsher. Almost like you’ll never go in the bank again.

Got to grocery store. They now have a man at the door. Checking to see if you have a mask and guarding the hand sanitizer table. It’s literally been a woman since they started this.

It was a short trip, a few staples and meds.

First, there seemed to be a lot of empty space compared to recently. I haven’t been in a grocery store in a month btw.

What I noticed is a lot of the organic and natural stuff cleared out. Almost like they weren’t going to carry it anymore.

I’m thinking that they’ve got their to-go/pick-up operation at the new flagship store across town and all the products are getting sucked up in to there.

I guess I just haven’t seen that many holes in a while.

Got the few things I wanted, forgot a couple things.

Checking out was weird. Got to the beginning of the line. Seems like they have an older male assistant manager doing this job a lot now. They hold you up, tell you which line to use or ask if you want to do self-check out.

Him “Do you want to use the self check?” Me “No thank you.” The guy looked disgusted with me. Looks away and says you can use aisle one then. Which is the less than 14 items line. Think I had 8.

Of course state of Vt says no plastic bags and stores MUST charge for paper, $.10 a bag. Woman stacks my stuff up, “And will you be wanting to use paper bags?” Me, “Yes, as many as it takes!” (because they still make good trash or recycling bags) She looked displeased. It’s like the paying for paper bags isn’t an option, even though it is.

They must complain about people like me not conforming fully to their new normal. Their attitude sucks nowadays. Used to be pleasant and fun, now they’ve got that essential attitude.

It is weird everywhere now. They don’t want us out and about anywhere. And if you do make it out for something, no joy allowed.

This seems to be our problem as well. Btw that canned boneless chicken breast we put up this summer is coming in mighty handy this winter. I've had a couple of off days and just did NOT feel like cooking at all, pull out a jar of chicken, some veggies, cheese, and cream of chicken soup, mix it all together and boom, dinner!

Went to Tulsa on Tuesday with the DW for another eye doctor appointment to see if she had a problem with the retina in her left eye. Turned out to be swelling in the eye tissue. $206 drops are being used.

Did go to Sams for a few things. Most shelves had stock. The meat counters were thin. The paper goods aisle only had store brand paper towels. NO TP.

Obtain what you need now while it is still available.

Thanks for the reminder, friends.

I have a lot of seeds already, left over from last year, but needed to replenish my supply. Thanks to the reminder earlier in this thread, I have now ordered all the seeds I need for 2021 except for cauliflower, which they were out of.

DO NOT ORDER SEEDS FROM AMAZON!

Last year, I made that mistake.

The seeds were being shipped directly from CHINA - even seeds I actually ordered.

Then there were all the “mystery seeds” coming directly from China that I did not order.

And the several orders for seeds that I paid for, but never received.

The only seeds I got through Amazon that we’re trustworthy were the seeds that came from Park Seed and a place in Texas called David’s Seeds - but I could have ordered directly from their website and skipped the Amazon middleman. Which is what I did do, for my 2021 seeds.

Amazon might be good for ordering lots of other things, but I will NEVER make the mistake of ordering seeds from them again!

Went to the closest Wally this morning in Arvada. Salad mixes were all use by 1/5 so I passed and they really didn't have the 50/50 blend I like. Did get the limes for the Indian chicken we're planning on doing at .32 each.

Frozen food was slim, but picked up a couple of boxes of Innovasion Sesame Chicken for some night when I don't feel like cooking. Coffee looked well stocked, but they only had 4 bags of the brand I buy so I bought them all.

Rice and beans were thin, canned meat in pretty good supply. Fresh meat was another story - the only thing I really buy there is their stir fry because it's cut thin enough to make really good jerky and they only had 2 packages. Rest of the beef was all high priced cuts. Pork was almost empty. Cereal was spotty and so was dairy - most of the milk section was empty.

Plenty of TP and PT, no limits. They only had Clorox wipes (I like Lysol better) and some other off brand. I normally buy the 3-packs of Kleenex, but the only ones they had were waaaaay in the back of the deep shelving unit (on the very bottom of course) and I was not about to crawl in there to get them, plus no associate in sight. Cat food well stocked, so I picked up another 16-lb bag for the felines. Need to go to Petco tomorrow to get the canine food (Natural Balance) to keep those two happy.

Store was pretty empty - this was at 8 am MST, but what people I did see all had full buggies. I just hadn't been there in about a month as they didn't have anything I needed until now.

We had an HEB curbside scheduled for Friday, but we've moved that up to tomorrow AM. Would do it tonight if we could. Based on the declining national political situation, I expect traffic at grocery stores to jump way up. Hope I'm wrong, but I doubt it.

Same happened with the seed order I placed with Amazon last year; shipped from China! I gave them to my brother to add to his bonfire. Now I only order from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. Placed an order last summer, and now good to go. Just need to pick up more potting soil for my raised beds.

Our local WM was packed. Both it and Safeway were low on pizzas, spices, and supplements. Walgreens supplements/vitamins were pretty well stocked. Prices seem about the same, but i need to be watching closer.

Just looked at Territorial seed co (since Baker Creek is down)..... over $4 for 1/2 gram of cabbage seeds!!

Was up at 3:30 this morning with everything from yesterday rolling around in my head. Started the fire and picked up the ad from the local grocery store; chuck roast for 2.99lb. Holy smokes. It's $6 lb here everywhere. Went to the store took the few 1.5lb packs they had and then asked the meat guy for bigger chunks, he said sure. Came back with 11 and 12lb pieces. Sweeeet. So for about $90 we scored 30lbs of chuck roast.

We can it, so it'll all go into qt jars/wide mouth, canned and enjoyed greatly. We keep a book of what we can, started in 2010. Found out a chuck roast entry in April of '11, it was 2.49 a lb. Wow, it's gone up a bit.

With Bidet and Cauntala confirmed we'll be stacking even deeper than we have room for, but we'll do it.

Now to get more epsom, we've got about 100lbs, not enough for much.

Pork shoulder was 1.59lb. We've got a ton of that in the freezer and canned, don't need anymore currently, actually took one out to slow cook on the grill this weekend.

Wife did some shopping at PetSmart yesterday. They were out of non-pate cat food. The dog food was virtually gone in all types of wet. They did have dry.

So she asked the manager what the deal was and he responded with they trucks have been running at half full for the last few months. They had just that week's truck and it had little cat or dog food. Note: we are talking about wet versions and not the dry.

I believe this to be more of a supply chain issue rather than a run on cat/dog food. There is a bit still around town, but all of it is the lower China type of food. Not something we feed to our animals.

Huh? I'm having trouble translating... Epsom salts? We use quite a bit, but not *that* much!

Summerthyme

Yeah, salts. Use it across the garden every other week. Was using at least 5lbs per feeding run last year when the garden was new and small. Opened up more area last fall and adding more beds so we'll go through a lot.

I am going to try to hold back a little more and see if we get the same results. It also goes on our flowers and in the orchard.

Oh, ok. Wow. Have you gotten a soil test? Magnesium is a necessary mineral, but it definitely can be overdone. Also, soil pH is important... too acid (or alkaline) "ties up" minerals in the soil. It's cheaper and better for the plants and soil to balance the pH first, then add nutrients as needed.

I went to our local Kroger this morning and got everything on my list to top of the just-in-case pantry. It never ceases to amaze me that our small mountain town store stays so well stocked.

I also ran to WalMart. Last week they had some pint canning jars and I got a case. I mainly went today to get a new computer mouse but thought I'd grab another case of jars, but no luck. All they had left were 2 cases of half gallons.

I will say something I always notice at WM. You have to know your prices. Everything in the food section that I looked at was more expensive than Kroger. Buyer beware.

I really don't throw that much down, just the number of plants adds up. It'll be worse this year (in a good way).

Soil will be tested this year but we do a lot of raised beds. Hopefully we'll have chickens again soon so not so much epsom will be needed. The plants do love it though. Put some on our small magnolia tree and it went nuts. :)

David's seeds have always done well for me. There are several veteran owned companies that sell on Amazon as well that have done well for me. In fact, our strawberry plants came from one of the veteran owned companies, and we have Strawberry (bushes) plants that produce amazing berries.

Putting this here cause I don't see any other thread on this. Not food but along that line.

Went to barber today for haircut. Women there was talking about how she had no business and was going crazy not having any work. She said a lot of the barber shops in the area were shutting down cause they had no business. I asked her what she going to do when Biden orders a complete shutdown when he takes over. She said he won't shut the country down and Biden didn't want to shut the country down.

She is a democrat and is completely oblivious to what the democrats are talking about. She acts like everything will be fine once Biden is in office. She was really happy about her $600 checks in the mail coming. I didn't dispute anything she said as I was feeling her out for how the left feels about everything going on.

Now, I realize she doesn't listen to the same news source as I do do but she was totally unaware of the situation she is in. She complained about this or that, how things weren't going well in her life but she had no clue as to why things were as they are. I left thinking, I can go longer without a haircut, (ain't going anywhere anyway), longer than she can go without eating cause she will be out of work.

I've only used it as a foliar spray on tomatoes and peppers, but it really does help fruit production. I'm just leery of using too much of any "trace" nutrient... I've seen land which was essentially poisoned with too much boron. Lets just say it's a situation that's a lot easier to fall into than fix!

MARANTHA!! Even so, come LORD JESUS!!!
Yesterday I drove through our nearby small town.....

I guess that was the first time I have really LOOKED at how many stores and shops are now closed down and boarded up!!
:strs:

I generally only go shopping once a month and just go where I'm going, and nowhere else.

WOW!! Almost everything is closed up!! Two florist shops, a smallish, family owned grocery store, a number of restaurants. It is like half the town is gone!!

OH MY GOSH!! UNREAL!
