How far north are you going? Back to the UP?

No, not quite that far. Northern lower Michigan, near a few Amish communities. Still farm area, but just on the edge of the northern forests. The UP is gorgeous and I loved living there, but the winters are just too brutal, and the bugs (mosquitoes, flies) are tough as well. This area should be a little lighter on both. I’d lived there several years ago, and just loved it.

84 here. No breeze, either. I don't know how any of you deal with those 100s day in and day out. Ugh!

Thompson,

It dry heat so not so bad. Oops, forgot College Station is between Austin and Houston. You can be grateful that you do not live in Houston. Been in Houston when there was 100% humidity and it was not raining.

Texican....
Im use to a lot of heat because I grew up in it. But I will say that Houston can get brutal.
Southern Louisiana can also feel like your getting boiled to death.

Add: Might I suggest an alternative for the future. A swamp cooler?

Neither here nor there.
I did some of my college at CMU (Mt. Pleasant). Really beautiful (and even better scenery farther north), but the economy was horrible. Most who stayed in the area had to get jobs in Lansing.

I was accepted to CMU for my MFA but turned them down the place had the weirdest vibe. Ditto with cranbrook. I told both of them no.

I give up.
It's 85 here now. I stayed in all day though. Son went grocery shopping and to CVS and some of his own personal shopping, and he didn't mind it, although he did as usual come home and immediately take a cool shower to wash off any stray corona chans. Gonna be 89-90 the rest of the week too but mostly cloudy with some rain. Think I'll stay in some more. LOL.

Finally had to make an appointment for tomorrow afternoon to have that faucet drip fixed. It's getting annoying. I'll probably stay in my room even though the guys wear masks (we can see them out making their rounds). We'll have to wear masks too. I'm really tired of Ms. Rona.

SO tired of this heat. It makes my ankles swell, esp the right one. Chronic hot flashes on top of the hundred-whatever temps. I'm getting a rash around my armpits from all the sweat.

How many cool showers can a person take in a day?

It's exhausting, and de-motivating. Beyond basic livestock care, I don't want to do ANYTHING. In the middle of knitting a sweater, but my fingers get sticky with sweat. It slows up the yarn.

This was me about ten year# ago. Thats when Orion Commander took over all shopping tasks when he found out I wanted to beat other shoppers, the stupid idiots who don’t know how to use a ****ing shopping cart, I mean how ****ing hard can it be, with my shopping cart, and then give them cookies afterwards.

Menopause is a horrible evil hormonal experience. I mean come on, I mean damn near dyed from hemorrhaging to death during puberty and I was nine years old when that happened, as if that wasn’t enough so I had to go through 5hat again during menopause. Yeah **** you mother nature!

Our 10 days of highs above 95 degrees just broke... we were blessed with 1 1/2" of badly needed rain and it's currently 67 degrees! Feels wonderful! Mostly, though, it's just felt like a good old fashioned summer... yesterday was the first day it really felt uncomfortable, and got up to 80 in the house... the humidity was around 65%. Mostly, even though it's been very hot, the humidity has been staying around 40%, and it's been bearable.

Summerthyme
I'm in the country in Western NY and it poured real good here during the late day Saturday and kept raining good all nite. The corn here badly needed the rain - the farmers i mean, glad we got it. It was wonderful.

One good thing about these temps over 100 and no rain is that the grass hasn't grown. West Texas has been over 100 for the last couple of weeks and it isn't supposed to dip below 100 for the high for at least another week or so.

I never got hot flashes at age 48, but my heart went out of rhythm real bad for 4 wks. It was horrible. I was on medicaid at the time and went to three hospitals and not one helped me. One gave me a shot of valium. Others just sent me home. I thought i was going to die. I saved my money and went to my moms heart doctor and he put me on beta blockers for a year. I weaned myself off them. They helped. Then my cousin told me when her heart went out of rhythm they just put her on those shocker pads? Can't remember the name. You know, they do it all the time in the movies. She was on INSURANCE and so she got the right kind of help! I was poor on medicaid and they sent me home with no help and i almost died. I was ok after a year. I started taking hawthorn and it helped a lot.

After living in Lansing, I found it quite sane! Michigan seems odd to a lot of people from back East. It's an unusual blend of cultures, plus the metaphysical veil is quite thin in spots: echos from shipwrecks and the War of 1812 live on. Toss in a few UFOs for kicks and it can be quite a ride after the sun sets.

I'm all about the doom
I was a kid in Dallas for the 1980 heat wave. Remember that we couldn't go out to play like we used to.
Summer of 2011, here at my current location in SE Okla, we had 40+ days of 100 degree heat. The last part of July, we had over a week of 110+ degree temps. Our "record" high was 116 degrees for this location. When we "cooled" down some in August, 102 didn't feel so bad.

ainitfunny

Saved, to glorify God.
I just checked the three day weather for my W.Washinton location and we have not been able to get up to 70 yet. But then it is only the second week of July. Maybe by the end of July or early August we will crack 70 again. I think we did already bust 70 for a couple hours one day, a while ago.

Back in the mid 50's I lived in Oklahoma City. We had a heat wave back then and the reservoir dried up. I have pictures of a friend standing in the middle of what would have been a nice little lake. I lived in a second floor apt with no trees in the yard. I distinctly remember my mother talking about it being 120 degrees in that apt. We played board games inside during the day and most of the time, the family walked to the local cafeteria in the evening to eat and cool off! What a difference because we moved there from Chicago!

What I hate is the city water supply 5 ' underground gives water that's slightly warm, can't even get a cool drink. I keep bottles in the fridge of tap water, sure is nice to have it when coming in from Frying in the outdoors
YES, the nice part about having a well is the 60 deg water

otherwise, in florida, at least for the last 74 years, it has gotten hot every summer...........some years hotter..........some years not so hot..........winter is "COLD AS HELL", 30's--40's.......
...once went to 18 deg F.................below 32 for 2 days.....
.....it killed millions of cockroaches ...
..that was a good year.........................few months anyway

thats the news from gainesville ,florida

Hahahaha, I have to laugh, John. People in FL have absolutely no idea what cold really is.

I think we turned the heat on less than a dozen times this "winter" here in St. Pete.

Try upstate NY if you want to know what cold can really be.

It's a super nice today, but beginning in the middle of the week, it will start here again. I have so much canning to do and I hate it when its this blasted hot to do it in.

Thats pretty neat. I was thinking though that it would add humidity to the air instead of take it out like an air conditioner does. So as soon as you run out ice then it might feel more uncomfortable. I don't know if that would be big deal or not.

I suppose it depends on how long you can run it when its really hot out.

My thought is that you could run this on a minimal amount of solar power and still be cool. (the marine grade blower)

If grid down, Idk how much juice a portable ice maker uses though.

Both together, certainly less than what a 5-6k btu unit would pull.
(I've heard you need at least a 600 watt solar system to run a window unit, by itself)

If one wanted to to the "ice chest" thing without adding humidity to the air, and one didn't want to get an actual a/c unit, one could get a small freezer, cut holes in it, and run blower hose into and out of it.

I wonder how much the freezer would run with a blower pushing or pulling air thru it?

Does this make any sense? Most people don't realize that an in home refrigerator/Freezer is a zero sum game. They remove heat from inside and eject that heat from the coils in the back. So the space occupied by the freezer compartment is made cooler at the expense of making the room around it hotter. Kind of like a displacement. Same heat, but distributed differently. In order to actually get rid of the heat from the room then the heat from the coils has to be ejected outside. So if you blew air through a freezer compartment and into the room, then the coils would put out more heat from the back, and you would end up with a zero sum change in room temp. The cold air blowing directly on you would feel good though.

I have always wondered why they don't use a simple technique to make refrigerators more efficient. In hot weather then design the coil space with a dryer type vent and vent the heat outside. That would make the room slightly cooler. Which also means that the refrigerator would not have to work as hard. In the winter- in cold climates then cut off the outside air flow so that heat is not lost to the outside. Or even better yet reverse the air flow and use the cold air to cool the refrigerator instead of the compressor.

$$$

Keep machinery a specific efficiency, to keep the money flowing (gas, electric, oil)
Otherwise, we would be driving around in 100 mpg v8 pickup trucks.

This must have been what I was picking up on then, yeah the vibe was really weird at night.

My elementary school had extensive Michigan history units for several years, plus I took family trips to battle sites and other memorials. The sensitives used to tell us, "It's like an old movie running of the past: don't be scared of it" because some of the deaths of the French, British, and Native Americans were so horrible and violent that the echos continue to today. Various ghost hunting groups have photos of orbs and other odd things from visiting sites at night. I learned just to stay away from most sites, except for the pioneer graveyards -- I'm related to 85% of the original settlers buried there. They're family, just saying "hi," so that was OK because I was just saying "hi" to them!
