Got lots of hamburger and the only thing that really makes it palatable for me is Manwich sauce. However at a buck a can I'm thinkin it can be made cheaper.
Does anyone have a tried and true recipe that comes at least close to the original?

I have found that almost any canned item can be made from scratch and canned for about half the cost and with better taste.

Good luck!!
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, but that Manwich sloppy Joe sauce has a distinctive flavor and trying to capture it might be tricky.

Check the good ol Internet. There are a bunch of copycat recipes out there. That's where I found the Pop Eyes Chicken recipe and it's as close to the original as I remember.

Very true. Just hope you don't capture the runs it tends to give people...... lol

We actually found the same thing with Chili. Was able to make it at a lower cost than store and with better ingredients. We are now looking to up size the batch so we can start canning and lower the costs of the ingredients.

For example, we used small 14 oz cans of diced tomatoes at $0.90+ per can. We found we can replace it with a number 10 can of diced tomatoes. It goes on. Keep the faith it will work, but you may need to try 4-5 times before you get it. Once you do, put the ingredients and process on to a note card. You will need it later. Experience has taught me this.

Yeah, I can do that. I was hoping to get the benefit of experience before wasting time and resources.

Here's how I make mine. Cook your burger and add in onions and bell peppers if you like, minced garlic is good too. Then add a tbs or so of brown sugar, vinegar, and mustard. Add ketchup to desired consistency. My crew loves this version an won't eat the stuff from a can. You can adjust the sugar and stuff to make it sweeter or add some hot sauce to make it spicy. You can even sub bbq sauce for the ketchup and make bbq joes.

It was 89 cents a can at Aldi, Iike it better than Manwich.

This is how I make them also.

Where I am supposed to be.
I always made the traditional sloppy joes with ketchup....for some reason, last year, I didn't know I had run out of ketchup, already had the burger and onions cooking.....I found this recipe that calls for tomato paste....and I haven't looked back, lol. I think it is so much yummier than using tomato sauce or ketchup. And I think bell peppers make a sloppy joe, a real sloppy joe. Could just be where I was raised. I don't like oregano, so I omit it from this recipe.
Prep: 10 mins Cook: 20 mins Servings: 8
Ingredients:
1 ½ pounds ground beef
1 onion, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1 cup water
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon dried oregano
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
8 hamburger buns, split
Step 1: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, saute the ground beef for 5 minutes. Add the onion and red bell pepper; saute for 5 more minutes, or until onion is tender. Drain the fat.
Step 2 Mix in tomato paste and water, stirring until paste is dissolved. Stir in garlic, chili powder, paprika, cumin, vinegar, brown sugar, oregano, salt and pepper. Continue to heat for 5 to 10 minutes, or until mixture is thick and stewy.

A recipe I have been wanting for a long time. I found 2 commercial ones I would try to make copies of. They are HEB organic sloppy joe sauce and hirmel not so sloppy sloppy joe sauce. I guess I will go off the ingredient list and try to make the sauce portion by itself.

Just go to the supermarket and find the section that has all packets for making various diners and gravy and what not
What your looking for is the Sloppy Joe mix and follow the directions. I use that in my dutch oven and make enough so I can add it to another dish I make.

Wanted to add a tip. I ran out if ketchup one day and had planned on making meatloaf. So I substituted manwich .
Been using it ever since
Bold is even better

Definitely going to save these. We love "manwich" in a tortilla shell with rice. Makes a good filling dinner with a lot less carbs. (And we butchers a bull so got a LOT of hamburger to eat up!)
