Well, it is about time! Kosovo is one of those artificially-contrived states, imposed and enforced by outsiders, whose creation always leads to future conflict.

On the other hand, this of course creates a high probability of international escalation and a wider conflict. If NATO steps in to this, so will Russia. They will not turn their backs on the Serbs again!

Speaking on tabloid PINK TV, Serbian president Vucic said that the NATO/KFOR commander will head to north of Kosovo this evening to meet with the local leaders. Vucic added he is in contact with the key international stakeholders in order to "normalise" the situation.

Hmmmmmm I was over that way in ‘99. Hauling US military equipment from a port in Greece up to the border of Kosovo. Things could get interesting…….I’m sure a few things have changed since Slobodan Milosevik was ousted. :popcorn1:

Makes you wonder if the route you took is being reestablished. And by whom?

It could be. Will have to listen to see if any correspondence is going on with the authorities in charge in Greece for clearances to use the port and such. The US may assist with some things since NATO is involved. For now I think it is just the EU troops being put on alert.

The northern half of the route from the port was pretty mountainous but our HETs navigated it pretty well. That was when the HETs had the Detroit Diesel 8V92 engines in them. They have CAT engines now.

Oh ya….all this news made me remember how the Army made us travel on that route to Kosovo. Since we were driving thru Greece, who was not involved with the conflict at the time, we had our M16’s out inside the trucks but they couldn’t be visible from the outside and all the ammo and mags were put up inside an ammo can with a tamper seal on it. That drove me NUTS!! We had a Military Police HMMWV guntruck escort front and rear of each convoy too.

how many areas of the world are about to explode? china, iran, israel, ukraine, pakistan, south america, africa, the balkans and there are many smaller conflicts constantly going on around the world. if the balkans went hot that would involve NATO and that would expand into Ukraine and then direct war with russia. I still have noodles from 1998 with Y2K. Think the noodles are still good?

Serbia and Kosovo shooting at each other
31 July 2022
Somewhere, Holland

Front edge of Global Famine. Perfect timing to start another war. Am told they are shooting right now.

If this kicks big, where will the refugees take refuge? Freezing Germany? Starving Europe?

If you’re gonna be stupid you better be tough. Bless their hearts.

N. Macedonians don't sound like they're messing around either..

What's Greece up to??

The pipeline to/from Russia to the Mid-East would be handy, yes?

I mean why involve Turkey if you really don't have to? Why build a pipeline when you can take whatever down by rail or truck or all of these?

Curiouser and Curiouser. :tlht:

Why is there no Cheshire cat emoji? Or was there and now it's gone? Or I'm thinking of something else?

Nevermind.

Daughter was in Kosovo around 2001. Bush visited the base and she also shook hands with Prince Andrew. Wonder if he was a good guy then

How does Serbia/Kosovo relate to Ukraine/Russia?
The number one consideration is the legitimacy of NATO to intervene in these territorial conflicts.

Points to ponder here.

The Islamic enclave of Kosovo was/is a part of Serbia. Many countries do not recognize Kosovo as an independent state.

Being created as a mutual defense alliance against The Red Horde, where did NATO have any authority to create a new nation state out of whole cloth in Serbia?

Also, where does NATO have any authority to intervene in Ukraine which is not a NATO member?

See where that is going?

Russia calls on Kosovo, US, EU to stop 'provocations,' respect Serbs in Kosovo

BELGRADE
Russia on Sunday called on Kosovo, as well as the US and EU, to stop “provocations” and to respect the rights of Serbs in Kosovo.

Kosovo’s new rules on the reissuance of personal documents and license plates for local Serbs constitute another step toward their expulsion from Kosovo, claimed Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry.

''Such a development of events is more evidence of the failure of the mediation mission of the European Union. This is also an example of what place Serbia has been prepared for in the European Union by offering Belgrade to de facto put up with the lack of rights of its compatriots,'' she added.

The tension between Serbia and Kosovo rose on Sunday ahead of a new Kosovar law set to come into effect Monday, making it mandatory for everyone, including Serbs living in Kosovo, to have a Kosovo ID card and plate.

According to local media, air raid sirens were heard along near the Kosovo/Serbian border as Kosovo is set to restrict border crossings.

Albin Kurti, Kosovo’s prime minister, blamed the president of Serbia for increased tension and possible border conflicts between Serbia’s Army and the Kosovar police, decrying planned “fear” and threats in neighboring Serbia.

Serbia’s Defense Ministry issued a statement alleging that the Kosovar government is spreading disinformation, including through fake social media accounts.

It added that the Serbian Army had not “in any way entered the territory of Kosovo.”

Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic is expected to address the nation later on Sunday night.

Kosovo, which is predominantly inhabited by Albanians, broke away from Serbia in 1999 and declared its independence in 2008. It is recognized by more than 100 countries, including the US, UK, France, Germany, and Türkiye. Serbia has not recognized this and continues to lay claim to the territory.

Old historical references:

The guy that killed Archduke Ferdinan was a Serb. Fled to Serbia and Austria-Hungry asked for him back to be tried in A-H, and Serbia said no. A-H declared war on Serbia. Russia came in on the side of Serbia. Germany on the side of A-H. Then France on the side of Russia, and then lots of sides picking, and WWI.

91-97 was the Yugoslavs wars (sort of a civil war) we came in did a bunch of bombing in support of the Muslims - Kosovo, even had a B117 Night Hawk shot down. Which everyone thought was impossible.

Lots of massacres and war crimes by Serbia, against ethnic Albanians - Moslems

You will note that the US was on the side of Kosovo, then, and Russia on the side of Serbia in WWI.

Looks like the old hatreds, as far as I can make out, has risen up. Serbs v Albanians.

Another interesting turn in world events.

Serbian Army in a state of heightened combat readiness: "We're equipped and armed..."

Minister of Defense, Miloš Vučević, stated that Serbia will not give up on the request to form the Community of Serbian Municipalities on the so-called Kosovo.

SOURCE: BETA THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2022 | 09:09

Vucevic told Happy television that the CSM is "a form of autonomy" and a guarantee that "the Serbian community can live in those areas" and reminded that the EU is "the guarantor of that agreement".

He pointed out that "Serbia must remain committed to peace and stability", and that the main interest is "to preserve peace".

"We need economic and defensive strengthening of Serbia. We do not want conflicts, but no one has a dilemma that Serbia will protect its citizens and that a new 'Storm' will not happen. The army is equipped and armed, and we support and want politics to solve political issues, not the army," said Vucevic.

Serbian Army has been in a state of heightened combat readiness, by order of the President of the country, Aleksandar Vučić, since November 2, after the appearance of drones that were said to have been monitoring military facilities from the direction of Kosovo.

NOTE: OP was from six months ago (July).

A few (new) things I found on twitter:
--------------------------

Serbia-masacre.PNG
Google Translation:
This month marks the 35th anniversary of the Paracín Massacre, a Serbian region that suffered from radicalism in Kosovo.
This attack ended with the death of the brave soldiers Safet Dudaković, Srđan Simić, Goran Begić and Hasim Dženanović.

Serbia-China.PNG
Google Translate:
China has a great economic advantage over Serbia as well. With the current stunts in the north of Kosovo, it is very easy for Serbia, both to guarantee victory and to eliminate the threat to China's economic interests: it just needs to expand the legs of the Chinese.
