On Tuesday the Trump administration is expected to once again go on the anti-Iran offensive a day after on Monday it declared its intent to label Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels a designated terrorist organization.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will accuse Iran of aiding and sheltering top al-Qaeda terrorists in an anticipated speech on Tuesday, Reuters reports.

"With just eight days left in office for President Donald Trump, Pompeo is expected to offer details on allegations that Iran has given safe haven to al Qaeda leaders and support for the group, the sources said, despite some skepticism within the intelligence community and Congress," Reuters writes.

That skepticism arises in part due to Shia Iran and Sunni al-Qaeda being fierce enemies in recent history, with Iran long aiming to root out outlawed Sunni militant organizations particularly active in the country's southwest region. There's also the fact of Iran being at war against the Sunni insurgency in both neighboring Iraq and more recently in Syria.

The claim of Tehran and al-Qaeda being in cahoots has echoes of the Bush administration allegation of secular Baathist dictator Saddam Hussein working with al-Qaeda, which it used as one of its many debunked justifications for war.
The Iran-Qaeda claims are nothing new, as neocons have for years maintained that the Islamic Republic actually orchestrated 9/11, while at the same time they ignored the mountain of evidence which points to Saud state sponsorship (and the fact that the vast majority of hijackers were Saudi nationals). Pompeo will likely invoke 9/11 in his Tuesday speech and make connections to Iran.

Pompeo's speech is also expected to feature the case of Abu Muhammad al-Masri. A New York Times report from November described him as AQ's second in command while alleging that he was assassinated inside Iran by Israeli operatives at the behest of US intelligence, claims which Tehran subsequently denied.

In the end Pompeo's allegations are just as much for domestic consumption as they are "threatening" to Iran's leaders, given it's part of continued White House efforts to "box in" Biden on Iran even before he enters office, limiting his ability to act on swiftly restoring to the terms of the nuclear deal, or JCPOA.

I was reading elsewhere that Trump was not getting his way with the military top brass with the insurrection act unless he was willing to go to war with china. Seriously at this point and time we are in no shape or condition to go to war with china it will take three years to build up for it and have to start up the draft again.
Now if any of this is true I think the Secretary of State just threw them a bone and seeing if they take it.

Which is why most of the hijackers (officially anyway) were Sunni Muslims from Saudi Arabia?

While nothing is impossible, some things are improbable and that is one of them - I mean sure sometimes especially in the East, the Enemy of my Enemy is my friend, but that's a stretch.

But that didn't stop the US from bombing Afghanistan afterwards either - and I knew people at the time who mostly watched MSM who really thought that Afghanistan had somehow attacked the US on 9/11...

I think this a headfake and a half truth put out there but I still can't figure out why to come out with this now.

So the neo-cons in State can make it more palpable for the public to accept a war with Iran during the biden administration? You would think since biden=china and china is all buddy buddy with iran that this would NOT happen. Unless current relations with China and Iran have soured and Pompeo was politely asked to stir the pot to get the party started? Who knows.

Follow the money.

To me, it looks like the case is being built for a war with Iran. After all, what unifies the country, spurs internal development and takes pressure off politicians better than a good old foreign war?

I think we should probably recognize that while Biden is buddy-buddy with China, Obama and his cronies are probably the ones pulling the puppet strings. And Trump/Pompeo want to put as much out there now while they can, while they still have a voice.

I suspected this just gives a green light to Isreal, if they choose to take it, to once again try and take out a neighbor's nuclear compacity.

I am pretty sure Trump doesn't want to start a war as his last legacy, though some in his administration may want to; the "9/11 connection" might make the US public turn a blind eye towards Isreal performing a strike and/or set things up for a war that Biden gets stuck with (but Trump doesn't start).

Given how weird Obama was about Isreal unless Joe has some really strong opinions on the topic (like he does about Ireland) I have trouble imagining the Biden (Obama) administration set up a situation where they are allied with Isreal vs. Iran unless something else is going on.

But I can sure see Trump and his administration (especially some of the Neo-cons) leaving as a "present" for Biden to deal with, perhaps with China narked off at the same time over Taiwan...

We shall see...it is hard to know just who/whom is really "in charge" of some things at this point.

It was on the internet, Must be True...

or maybe not.

I consider him a big, fat buffoon......he has openly admitted, “We lie, we cheat, and we steal.
I remember reading about his saying that, and on last night’s trunews.com program, one of the cohosts also brought it up.
