I just got an idea for a Valentines gift for my hubby. He's just getting started in photography. This is a hobby I am encouraging because he is hoping to retire someday and will go crazy with nothing to do! (And probably drive me crazy too!) Is there a magazine you would recommend for beginners?

I know it's late notice but I just now thought of it.

I've only had experience with one photography magazine, and it's Outdoor Photographer. It focuses on wildlife and landscape photography. I think it'd be a good fit for your husband because the photographers share tips to improve photography along with the photos they share. I'd recommend picking up an issue locally and skimming it to see if it fits the bill.

The magazines are great, but a forum is better. You are able to learn from other posters and when the time comes, are able to post you're images and get direct feedback. I was just on an old haunt last night myself. Many pro photographers and learning is easy. I have learned a ton from Dgrin.

Thanks for the replies. He decided that he NEEDED another lens, so he picked it out and ordered it and that's his gift...easy peasy! It's like how a lot of men shop for their wives but only in reverse! Honestly, I think that a lot of the pleasure is the researching he does before he buys.

I will probably use the magazine suggestion for another special occasion, Earshel.

I will pass the info about forum on to him watcher.

:) I wish him happy journeys. When I started in the hobby, I had no clue of how many tricks there were. Lots of good reading on those forums. When you want to learn, learn from the best lol.

I'd have to agree with the forums. There's many you can join where there's dozens of courteous photo bugs that are happy to help explain everything from the basics to advanced technique and theory.

I'm no pro, but I always like to tell people starting out to get a good comfortable feel for the equipment. Make an effort to learn about exposure and optics, why some lenses are better than others, and how to tell the difference. Particularly, learn to read and understand a lens's MTF chart ... which is crucial to knowing what your buying and what results to expect from it.

Also, watch out for some of the online low-price equipment sites. Some of them have almost too-good-to-be-true prices, and do so by pummeling you with up-sell on every purchase. I found Adorama and B&H Photo to be pretty reputable, but to be honest it's been a long time since I've shopped them.

I really like c't magazine, it's well written and not overly horrible on the sales pitches. It can be hard to find.

It's been a while since this was posted, how is he doing with it all? What camera system is he using?
