Prep Genrl Patreon channels

I've decided to drop all of my patreon subscriptions. I was down to two as I had already discontinued several in the last couple of months. The two that I had left are hard core preppers, which on the one hand I have no problem with but on the other hand I'm prepped to the max and don't want to keep hearing prep up, prep up. We are in our BOL in the woods, we do not belong to a crew, although I've reached out to no avail. So its just the two of us and that is how it will be. I do have a distant cousin that lives across the highway that we check on each other every few days, we give them eggs and cheese and would share a few other things if it became necessary. I'm always encouraging them to keep a full pantry, reminding them of how there were shortages last year and with covid how shopping was not what it use to be.

So I'll save a few bucks each month by not subscribing to any patreon creators.

Haven't yet supported anyone through Patreon. I figure that is what the endless YT ads are for. Some of those "content creators" make VERY good money.

Doubt I've missed out on any crucial info.

This is just a 'me' type of response, so your mileage may vary. PLEASE research those that you consider to watch on youtube WELL before you go the patreon route. Over the past couple of months, there has been one that has been exposed for stealing donations that were supposed to go elsewhere. One that possibly is the daddy of a 2 y/o from a step daugher (he claims she used a used condom to do the deed), and one that has a BIL THAT LIVES WITH HER that is a convicted child molester (and a LONG rap sheet of other exposure crimes that do NOT relate to the molestation). Looking at the 'class' of some of these people should be a signal enough if they are into 'prepping videos' as a source of income (probably because nobody else would hire them because of the background checks). Be careful out there, and don't fall for it. Personally, the videos I make with the knowledge I share (not prepping related), I do for the love of the crafts that I do and to help spread knowledge. I don't make a buck off of my videos, and intend to keep it that way. Some of these 'channels' have 10s of thousands of subscribers. So please do your research.

Anything I've subscribed to on Patreon I had watched their utube videos for a good while. Only one or two did I pay $3 a month, most were $1. All prepping or gardening related. I'm just tired of listening to them. I'm careful where I spend my money and I'm not clueless, I've learned a lot in 74 years.

Donna -- I mainly use youtube for how-to videos, mostly home repairs on an "as needed" basis. Too many ads! But I'm not giving them any of my money for ad-free content.

I'm going to be cutting down drastically on my overall internet usage soon with the beginning of spring. The more time I spend outside in the sun, the better I feel.

Meemur - I hear you on the outside. We are still in the process of cleaning up from the massive ice storm that was in October. It was to cold/snowy to do much over the winter, so we waited until it started to get warmer. Did some, then had that REALLY nasty cold, so had to stop again. We've been dragging limbs/trees out of the woods for what seems like forever. I would say that about 95% of my trees had damage. I hope what is left survives and that they weren't hurt enough that they cannot recover. Plus gardening is about to start hard and heavy. Edited to add: The older we get the slower it is to clean up after a storm, and well... we'll be doing this at least all summer and into the fall.

Put a note out about "free firewood, must haul" if you have those sorts of folks in your area.

After that ice storm, I doubt many 'need' firewood. Besides, I don't want people to be out in my woods, cause they would probably cut down good oak trees.

I do have a couple artists/creators that I support to a small degree on Patreon. Usually after I’ve had some interaction online with them and to whom I have been subscribed for a while. I consider it money well-spent, even though it’s not much. I never bought records as a teenager because all my babysitting money went for school supplies so I kind of think the music I support now is what others spent in their youth LOL. If I just have to cut back I always can but for now I like knowing I’m helping their work and their families <3

I spend more supporting this site annually, which is also something I feel is completely worth supporting. :)

I was going to patrion a dude and then noticed that he was already receiving $2000 a month from others. I figured that was enough considering his other incomes from books etc.

I support one Christian singing group on Patreon, Sounds like Reign. I used to have two others, but they were both men who i can no longer stand to listen to. They have thousands following, so I won't be missed. : ) Its never anything new or unique. Repackaging the same info thats everywhere.

I subscribed to several Patreon channels but when renewal time came last January, Patreon (or their billing service, I don't know and don't really care to know the mechanics of it all) wouldn't accept my cc data. I tried several times to sort it out and never got any help from Patreon other their sniffing that I must be doing something wrong.

The only change on my card was the expiration date and sooper sekret ID code on the back side. I guess their software figures that the card number should change as well and rejects it. (I was surprised that the card number itself didn't change but didn't gripe about that with the issuing company as I didn't have to memorize a new number LOL)

It was only ten bucks a month so no big deal, and I'd gotten where I didn't pay much attention to the SSDD content anyway. Half of it $5 went to a member here but he is making enough money off of his book, Yootoob and Patreon that my small contribution wasn't really necessary for either of us and I suspect he's about as happy that I'm no longer subscribing as I am to no longer listen to his admirers tell him how great he is.

The one that I really do miss is John Mobley's channel. Good meaty content but delivered in the blunt sergeant mode that's too rough for most genteel folks. Definitely not a man of the cloth but worth a read.

What happened to Mobley?
I don't believe anything has; but without a Patreon subscription, I haven't been able to check whether or not he was still on Patreon. I do miss reading his material, though.

He did have a general opening page explaining his channel which didn't require a subscription but I haven't looked to see if it was still there.

ETA: Apologies for misspelling; it's John Mosby and his Patreon channel is still up:

I didn't renew any channels, but I can check back and see what the titles are and nothing has interested me enough to resubscribe, the music videos are worthless.

That's certainly the case in the prepper sphere too. I remember listening to financial-sense back in the early 2000's, it was full of unique content and Jim-Paplava usually kept his opinions to himself and let his guests do the talking. Then over time he became an "Expert" and never shut up, the interviews went downhill and he went behind a paywall. Most of the content of these sites is just plagiarized off other sites anyway, Chris Martinson over at Peak prosperity is a classic case of this and he too can't keep his opinions to himself. You wouldn't mind if they had professional experience in the issues they talk about, or cited those that do, but unfortunately after a few years of interviewing smart people they think they are smart themselves.

I recently listened to a peakProsperity cast of him interviewing Meadows, one of the original authors of The Limits to Growth. Meadows knew his stuff and was up to speed but Martenson kept interjecting with, well dribble basically, and it made the whole interview seem crappy. In the end he was prattling on about how technology and AI might be a fix for the future and if I wasn't busy getting the washing off the line I'd have pulled the battery out of the MP3 player lol.

He usually blabbers endlessly about the Federal Reserve, as though they are the cause of all the world's woes, and that was the reason I stopped listening to his pods. That was before he started charging for content. Of course anyone who has done any research knows the Fed is actually a private "Bank owned" stooge, a front to deflect blame from the men behind the curtain. Martenson should have come across this fact by now so I can only surmise that he is either incredibly stupid, or that he is a paid shill to push the party line. Either way his guests always appear elsewhere in interviews so there is no need for me to go to his pay website.

Getting harder and harder to find decent original content out there worth downloading.
