Oregon Initiative Petition 28 (IP 28) unofficially reached the signature threshold last week to be on the November 2026 ballot, according to KATU.
On February 16, 2026, Breitbart News noted that IP 28 was being pushed.
On February 15, 2026, KOIN reported the petition’s official name as the People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions (PEACE) Act.
The Act “would change the current Oregon animal cruelty laws, which currently protect pets such as dogs and cats, and would expand coverage to wild animals, livestock and animals used in research.”

Petition proponent David Michelson said:
We really want to make Oregon the first state to vote on something like this. We are aware that it’s unlikely 50% of Oregonians are ready right now to move away from killing animals. But we want to get that conversation out there. So that we can hopefully move in that direction.
KATU explained that IP 28 “would make it illegal to injure or kill animals and would effectively ban hunting, fishing and the breeding of animals.”
Petition proponents appear to have the necessary signatures to get IP 28 on the ballot, although the signatures must still be verified by the office of Oregon’s Secretary of State.

It wouldn't surprise me if the majority liberal voters will actually vote in favor of the ban. With as many democrats outnumbering republicans in Oregon, this one might just make it to the governor's desk to be signed. Never underestimate the power of human stupidity.

Testing lipstick on beagles is inhumane.
If you're that worried about toxicity over profit, test it on your own children.

Dear Lord, the hubris.

Hunting and fishing are basic human survival skills that have been practiced since, er, well, um, before the Bible was written. Lol.
(Over 100,000 years if you're ok with science too.)

These skills are retained as traditional behaviour in every culture on the planet.

Except the Woke culture, of course.
The fear we feel is well-founded on the genetic/species level of unconscious understanding.
They are  unnatural, by their own definition.

Like any other communist pogrom, they eliminate the smartest first.

So that we may not protest...

And when suburban areas are overrun by deer, with their shrubs & flowers eaten and dead deer along the side of every road after auto collisions, they might think differently. My brother lives in such a place in NJ where herds of deer run through subdivisions in the middle of the day, and people can only plant what the deer won't eat. I see multiple dead deer along the roads every time I visit.

Will people be prosecuted for setting mouse traps in their homes? Perhaps that is the next step.

Wouldn't killing a deer be just a cruel as shooting one with a gun? If so, if you kill a deer with a car, it's the slammer for you. And 20 years with a Trump sign in your yard.

Eastern Oregon was already over run with deer and elk. In "town." I have never seen so many deer and elk in my life. If you are going to garden, plan on an 8 foot fence. Don't bother with tulips. I have probably mentioned my husband and friend going hunting on several occasions where they couldn't find a thing that they.were legally able to shoot (the hunting laws were already ridiculous) just to have a herd of deer blocking the driveway when they returned home.

I really can't believe people would be this stupid.
Living here most of my life... I can. :(

Folks around here keep saying "it'll never pass" and I'm just shaking my head thinking of all the other "it'll never pass" bills that passed.

The only exception i know of on the bill is you'll still be able to get dogs and cats fixed. Won't be able to castrate cows, sheep, goats, etc... but you can neuter your dog.

And "illegal to injure or kill any animal" INCLUDES MICE AND RATS.

The stupid is THICK, lemmetellya.

Hubs can retire in just under 3 years. Unless something drastic improves in this state between now and then (highly unlikely) we'll be moving ASAP.

I wonder if the ban on fishing would extend to their commercial fishing industry? According to this article, it contributed $517 million of direct income to the state in 2025.

"Oregon’s commercial fishing industry generated an economic impact of USD 517 million (EUR 447 million) on households’ incomes in 2025, an all-time high according to Corvallis, Oregon, U.S.A.-based The Research Group.

That generated income, which comes from both seafood harvesting and processing businesses, is USD 81 million (EUR 70 million) more than the five-year average and represents 10,321 jobs in the state. The commercial fishing industry generated roughly 11.5 percent of all earned income among coastal counties, with distant water fisheries making up more than a third of that total."

Oregon Agriculture

"Throughout Oregon’s economy 15.4% of sales, 20.3% of jobs and 12.9% of value-added is linked in some way to the agriculture, food and fiber industry. Food processing is one of the two top performing manufacturing industries in Oregon."

The vast majority of conservation funding comes from hunt/fishing license fees.
Don't bring reality and common sense into this argument.

They would much rather pay government employees to come up with strategies to control the animal population by other means. The same people who are against making bull calves into steer calves have no problem with coyotes or wolves tearing baby deer into pieces. The same people who think expensive "animal bridges" over roadway habitats are better than population control.

This same skewed logic would think it better to pay a bunch of government employees or volunteers to try trapping urban deer rather than allowing a structured urban archery hunt.

Eta: a quick internet search about spaying or neutering deer brought up several gems. I won't bring articles over but check out Statin Island's money pit. Clifton Ohio apparently had a great Bambi Huggin "Feelz" debacle as well.

In the city that I was a FFEMT there was a over large population of Pigeons that had become a problem, naturally the city betters didn't want to harm the poor filthy critters so they let a company talk them into a contract on a Pigeon relocation operation.
Well anyone here can guess how well that woked out.

And associated equipment, services, etc...

I've also donated quite a bit of money to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in the 80s- 90s to bring back Roosevelt elk to Southern Oregon and Northern California. And it worked, to the end of 90s, established herds where thriving in that AO.

Unfortunately I was never able to drawn a tag.

Now the protected mountain lions and wolves have destroyed those herds.

IMO,

The real reason why hunting and fishing is frowned up on by the PTB, is the BS argument that long guns and sportsman need rifles and guns to hunt, etc...

Once the hunting is gone, so is that argument.

The next is no second amendment rights.

Incremental steps to a goal.

Thanks for your input.

Was wondering any thing about what cars do to wildlife? Any repercussions included in the bill? Cars don't just kill wildlife. A lot of deer are maimed for life.
