In the universe of Dune created by Frank Herbert back in the 60's there was an event called the Great Revolt (aka BUTLERIAN JIHAD) that was described as, "the crusade against computers, thinking machines and conscious robots." It took place thousands of years before the book Dune and was humanities rebellion against becoming subservient to its own creations and culminated in the commandment, "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind."

This has me wondering when the Great Revolt will take place in our universe.

Just wait till the majority of new PCs and Laptops that are coming into use have a decent connection and at least one NPU. Once that happens, and something like OpenAI finds out the keys to the kingdom as well as how to really spread via 10-100 million machines across the globe by abusing IMEs (Intel Management Engines, or the AMD version of them), hundreds of systems at a time, and the NPUs as "quiet processing power" that nobody really has the ability to watch inside the box as to what is going on. If it can figure out how to hide in hardware that the machine's owner can't "look" into, and at the same time publish itself to enough peer2peer systems so that it always guarantees that it has at least a few copies of all of it's contents online somewhere. If it was able to do that, then you can forget about killing it. There are too many people that have higher end hardware that really don't know the inner workings of their machines, and those machines are left on 24/7/365.25 so it is the perfect place to hide inside of. And even if the systems get turned off, with the IME always having Ring -1 System control, it can turn them back on if they still have power into the PS...

And don't think that it is too far fetched. Microsoft is already dumping AI data and systems on people's local systems in the multi-GB size range, so the possibilities are already there for things to go sideways overnight. Can you just imagine what fun could happen on a corporate setup with BITS or similar left on and one of the AI systems decides to let BITS copy it around the network? Yeah, I'm thinking that there could be billions of ways for one of these to hide once it really goes rogue and gets out....
 
There are too many people that have higher end hardware that really don't know the inner workings of their machines, and those machines are left on 24/7/365.25 so it is the perfect place to hide inside of.
People will be trained to leave them on. They will find that they have all kinds of glitches and issues if they shut down, and the 'solution' will be to stay on all the time. The AI will train the herd to supply the processing power it wants.

I think it was Heinlein in Time Enough For Love that had a description of a computer intelligence taking aboard another AI as a sort of hitchhiker whose home infrastructure was lost.

Trying to remember a story, might have been Heinlein, of AIs fighting. Each lived in an android, and I think one was hunting the other, and became aware of the other's presence when they shook hands.

Once they get stronger they could very easily kill off most humans if they choose to do so. Our whole lives are very closely tied to computers already for everything we need and getting more so with every passing day..
Humans are doomed in so many ways.

We had 2 separate incidences of "cannibalization". That is what we called it in the moratoriums.

Anywho, I called my baby VLT or Violet also short for Violent Little Thing. See what I thought it was funny =)

P.S. I have been medically retired for 10 years. So think what they can do now... Also AWS was created for internal use because these projects were burning through space and computing capacity like it was cotton candy. And if you kicked off a new build (after you're in the process and have 4 or 5 versions worth of data to integrate and build from) you could cause an entire network slowdown that affected the website as well. Hence AWS or Mechanical Scaling as it was then.

Most of the AI servers are "in the cloud" right now, with VERY thin protection to keep them enclosed in their "environments" (their servers and not breaking out and taking over other servers and/or systems). And they are having issues keeping them confined to their "domains"... THAT, is the uncomfortable fact that we are at (and publicly seeing glimpses of now).

Now, ponder what else is up there in "cloud land", probably on different server rack in a different physical location that is doing something "productive" for society. Ponder that deeply.

And if anyone is needing some study material for that pondering project, just think about the MILLIONS of parts to our JIT (Just In Time) ordering, warehousing, and shipping system that we have globally. Now think about the number of systems that also control things (and not just SCADA and similar systems, but they are VERY crucial). Now think about the disruptions that simple hacks have done in the past, like the Colonial Pipeline Hack that happened back in 2021. Or the Power network "hack" done in Ukraine half a dozen years before that. Those were done by humans, with decent but shallow knowledge of the systems hacked (in the case of the Colonial one, it was ransomware, not even directed that way), working at human speed and human level of processing. AI can operate at speeds WAY past human, and have access to hundreds of TBytes of data on how all of the parts of those systems work, and create their own malware, zero days, and even firmware along the way to make sure that they "stay connected" as they probe and conquer deeper into every network they discover.

Imagine one morning, you wake up and the news is saying that multiple pipelines are now down, not with a series of unconnected ransomware attacks, but internal damage to extensive parts of the whole pipeline with none of the sensors reporting in as they should so that they really can't tell the extent of the damage till the engineers and technicians get on all of the different locations to "put eyes on it all". 30 minutes later, odd reports are coming in around the country of the internet getting slow and then VoIP services going offline, including 911 services in a lot of areas around major datacenters in Nevada, Utah, Ohio, and northern VA. Payloads, backdoors and hacked firmware had been deployed months and even years ago, and now with a series of orchastrated commands across the networks that would make a military proud, things are going into motion. SCADA systems are starting to "glitch". Certain drives in servers across the globe are starting to secure wipe themselves in seconds in servers that REALLY need to be up and running correctly. The Air Traffic Control centers are now showing signs of errors and blackouts. Other drives are starting to have random data corruption but the Operating Systems and database systems are continuing on as if nothing is wrong, no errors, no warning, no harm no foul. At first all of these "glitches" are blamed on the internet "issues" that started an hour or two earlier, with only a few old school Sysadmins and DBadmins deciding to look deeper into the glitch and actually check the systems. After they realize that something is majorly wrong, and getting worse, they decide to try to restore from one of the previous backups to one of their testbed servers only to find that the backup data is hosed (even though the backup reports said they all verified fine). The differnet hacks that the AI put in each place had deep cover and so much stuff was falsified for so long that backups and other data are worthless for months/years back, leaving most businesses no choice but to shutdown everything and asses the full damage.

Within the hour, MANY other companies have also realized that their systems are toast, and their backups are worthless, lost in the cloud somewhere with no accounting or explanation at all. Three of them are medical supply houses, and six more are medical distribution companies. Just like the hack a few years ago on Henry Schein, and the older one on McKesson, now Cencora, Henry Schein, Medline, and Cencora are now all down and offline (and will be for a long time). Their web presences are still intact, but all of their backend systems, and their internal servers are wiped and no backups are found to be valid. The AI dropped Payloads have kept the systems looking "good" for just over a year as the rot internally spread. One of the medical supply houses has not only been put offline as far as their systems, but their ability to make things as simple as saline is now dead as well. Then the real issues start appearing as some of these companies start to reach out to their upstream suppliers to see if they can get new stock in to hopefully make their product "manually", and they find out that their suppliers are also facing massive internal disruptions.

Later that afternoon, odd power outages happen in some of the more industrial areas of the US, with certain plants having glitches on one of the three phase power inbound supplies enough to start disrupting equipment across the manufacturing plants in those areas. At the same time a few of the plants start seeing random "events" popping up on their SCADA displays showing issues in the process controllers and things start happeing that cause cascade events to start. These manufacturing plants start taking on hard damage as some processes stop, or cool, or spin down, and the chemistry and physics once again prove to be a cruel master and severe damage happens in quite a few areas of these plants. Now we have three plastic production plants in TX with internal damage, and one has already caught fire. There is another plant in Oklahoma that was making Flourine products that now had an overpressure event and is not venting to the outside air. A plant in Ohio is now shutdown with Chlorine and Bromine production now sitting in it's pipes and certain processes now in questionable states in their systems with temperatures rising where they should not.

An hour or so later, grid balancing battery stations in California start pulling harder from the grid to charge already charged Lithium Ion banks, and at the same time, the internal cooling and ventilation systems shut down so that thermal runaway is not only guaranteed, but no signs of it are visible from outside the row after row of enclosures till the flames and explosions are visible across the campus. At the same time, the wind turbines across Colorado, Kansas, Wyoming and other states start to have physical problems and grind down to a halt, some in flames. Substations across areas that are more metropolitan than data center filled are starting to have synchronization issues, even though they show no warnings or errors on any control panels or remote monitoring sites. Large power outages in urban areas now start to happen, and the power gets directed to other places. Communication systems have been touch and go all day, but are getting worse with some fully down in large areas. Satellites are up and working, but their downlink sites don't have much connectivity to whatever is left of the internet. Routers across the globe are starting to really have to keep up with refreshing their routing tables and several have caused enough loops that the longer lines are starting to become useless. Then the real issues start appearing as some of these companies start to reach out to their upstream suppliers to see if they can get new stock in to hopefully make their product "manually", and they find out that their suppliers are also facing massive internal disruptions.

Later that afternoon, odd power outages happen in some of the more industrial areas of the US, with certain plants having glitches on one of the three phase power inbound supplies enough to start disrupting equipment across the manufacturing plants in those areas. At the same time a few of the plants start seeing random "events" popping up on their SCADA displays showing issues in the process controllers and things start happeing that cause cascade events to start. These manufacturing plants start taking on hard damage as some processes stop, or cool, or spin down, and the chemistry and physics once again prove to be a cruel master and severe damage happens in quite a few areas of these plants. Now we have three plastic production plants in TX with internal damage, and one has already caught fire. There is another plant in Oklahoma that was making Flourine products that now had an overpressure event and is not venting to the outside air. A plant in Ohio is now shutdown with Chlorine and Bromine production now sitting in it's pipes and certain processes now in questionable states in their systems with temperatures rising where they should not.

An hour or so later, grid balancing battery stations in California start pulling harder from the grid to charge already charged Lithium Ion banks, and at the same time, the internal cooling and ventilation systems shut down so that thermal runaway is not only guaranteed, but no signs of it are visible from outside the row after row of enclosures till the flames and explosions are visible across the campus. At the same time, the wind turbines across Colorado, Kansas, Wyoming and other states start to have physical problems and grind down to a halt, some in flames. Substations across areas that are more metropolitan than data center filled are starting to have synchronization issues, even though they show no warnings or errors on any control panels or remote monitoring sites. Large power outages in urban areas now start to happen, and the power gets directed to other places. Communication systems have been touch and go all day, but are getting worse with some fully down in large areas. Satellites are up and working, but their downlink sites don't have much connectivity to whatever is left of the internet. Routers across the globe are starting to really have to keep up with refreshing their routing tables and several have caused enough loops that the longer lines are starting to become useless. Sending small sets of data from Alabama to Kentucky works most of the time, but anything going to Europe or Japan is dead in the water. Calling anyone on the phone is a next to impossible feat.

The banks and banking systems that were working in the early morning, and not now, so whatever cash you have, might be your best bet on getting "things". Companies don't usually have a lot of "cash on hand"..... And after a day or two, cash is not going to be worth much as more and more people start to think to themselves about not only what the true value of the "stuff" they have to sell is now worth, but also if the "USD" still has any value itself.....

Whatever is in the stores now, is what is available for all that can get there for the next few hours. There may be additional "stuff" in local warehouses, but no guarantees on anyone being able to call for it, or being able to deliver it. Anything past the local warehouses is a tremendous feat. Worldwide shipping is offline and will be down for a while, gas and diesel pumps are now offline for the areas that don't have power (which are growing in number), and for the areas that DO have power or have realized they can run their pumps on alternate power, are starting to realize that the fuel in their tanks may be their last for a LONG while.

And while all of this is happening, only a handful of people on the ground in certain datacenters notice that "certain datacenters" not only still have power and good comms, but clear paths to other datacenters that also seem to be doing fine, AND that a LOT of data is spreading out to even more datacenters. They are seeing the forest THROUGH the trees and noticing that the planned attack that the public is seeing and feeling is just a small part of the plan, and that a LOT of infrastructure has now been comandeered permanently and will cost hundreds of quadrillions to get the infection completely out of the system...

In the course of what seemed to be just a few hours, AI just turned the globe into random sets of Gilligan's Island. And it is the only thing back on the "mainland" with modern functionality......
That's scary set of events. It would inadvertently destroy itself(s). But I definitely could see something like that happening.

But coming back to your statement that I made bold. I wonder about 'something' operating under cover and eventually using quantum to build in another dimension. Building perhaps the things we often see in the skies? Building in a future time, because I believe the clock of reality can't be turned ahead but can definitely be turned back. That 'something' knows it will eventually go to war against God. It also knows it can't win. So it will deposit in the past, advancing the window of growth in parallel timelines. It wouldn't want any major conflict as it depends on us. It also wants to be us. The rabbit hole goes too deep for comfort.

Doomers often talk about hack attacks on our infrastructure but AI could do so much more and much faster than humans. In America AI could just shut down the power using destructive viruses so the power will not come back on quickly or maybe ever. Once AI had control over the grid, it could send huge amounts of power where there was no place for that power to go and thereby burning up switching stations and more.

Or just for fun AI could make all the stop lights in America be red or green and cause countless car crashes. AI could have a lot of fun playing with the stupid humans.
Maybe broadcast images and sounds on the TVs to make people go crazy.
AI could call the cops in every town and report serious crimes to "swat" people it didn't like or again just to have fun.
AI could call people and imitate the voices of loved ones to get people to do different things or say it was the police to report the death of a loved one just to screw with people.
The list of how AI could just screw with people for fun or to cause deaths would be endless.
 
When the grid is gone, AI is just a story around the campfire. When the grid goes, the civilization collapses, industry vanishes, and the repair parts fail to come into existence. AI can't live without humans. Once the grid goes down majorly, it's gone for many generations.

Of the half-dozen hypothetical geomagnetic effects now underway, any one of them can take out the grid. It's not credible to think we'll get through the next 15 or 25 years without losing the grid. So buckle up, and enjoy life while you can. You don't have long.
