Misc Old Canning Jars.

About thirty years ago, I was buying jelly in some nice thick tumblers that I still have and use. They are even great for rooting cuttings in the south windows. The brand was Griffin. I haven't bought jelly for a long, long time, but I suppose even this brand comes in icky plastic jars now, like everything else does.

A few years back, my sister and I saw the way things were going and bought tons of Kraft mayo and Miracle Whip in the little glass half-pints, just so we'd have the jars. We even figured out a way to make them work as baby bottles, should such be needed.

It was worth the extra cost. We are still very glad we did this and wish we'd gotten even more of them while we still could have.

Neither here nor there.
No, that I don't remember. Jelly came either in jars or nice reusable jelly glasses. These little bowls were kind of a specialty thing, I think, and only came with that one type of jelly.

I never had much of a sweet tooth, but that stuff was SO GOOD! I could have eaten the whole thing with just a spoon. Our big family would wipe out that little bowl of jelly at one breakfast. We just couldn't afford that!

By the way, thanks for opening a door to a neat memory! I have been feeling really nostalgic lately and this was a nice little tidbit to recall.

Hence my Holidays 2014 thread I started two weekends ago, I think everyone could use a little bit of nostalgia right now!!!

I'm so excited! I found some 63 jars and rings at Goodwill the other day - I have lids, but no rings or jars.

Thats a good start and you can find new ones at wal-mart. We got most of ours at yard sales and don't turn them down because there is a few Mayo jars in the mix, they work just as well.
If you lived close enough I would offer some rings we have way more than we need.

I have one of these and I think it's half gallon jar or maybe a quart and a half, it's keeping my button collection company.

Sorry - should have been more clear - SIZE 63. They were made years ago, and I don't think they are produced any more. They are smaller than standard size jars/rings. Think between standards and a juice bottle (like the older cranberry juice jars that were glass). I hit auctions for jars all the time. I use what ones I can (old mayo, etc) for canning; and use the others for dehydrated stuff (if they have good lids that screw on).

on a related note but slightly off topic, as far as new canning jars go, I have seen a huge increase in the amount available. I was at Walmart on Sunday and saw more cases of canning jars on that one shelf, than I have seen in the last 10 years total. And just down the row was a large supply of lamp oil that was nonexistent a few years back. I think it's a big sign when items like that are no longer hard to find but in abundance at walmart.
