Bad idea
Not the cease fire deal but the other
History tends to repeat itself. This adage has been seen multiple times in the past and we are seeing it being repeated again today. Wars tend to happen when politicians can't or unable do their job and belligerents actions/reactions tend spin out of control to the point where war is inevitable.
American's have a tendency to look at the world cultures through American eyes. How we think, is how everyone else in the world thinks, or at least how we think they do. This lack of understanding of Japanese culture in 1940 created the war in the Pacific. Most Japanese including a large number of the Imperial Cabinet and military including the Emperor did not want a war but a lack of understanding of Japanese culture by the American government in their negotiation communications emboldened the warmongers on both sides. We said one thing but the Japanese interpreted it to mean something completely differnt and visa versa.
The Japanese Empire was a modern nation with ahighly developed manufacturing industry in the 1930's. What they lacked was the need to import almost everything needed by a industrialized nation, as their island was very poor in natural resources. The US understood this ned but unwisely used it as a club in dealing with Japan, even though they were an ally in WW1 and major trade partner of the US in the 1930's. Unknowingly, the American government in their lack of understanding of the Japanese culture, in an attempt to restrain the Japanese, their communications was actually communicating that America wanted to restrict them to their island and not allow them to be a major nation. This was something the Japanese could not allow and strengthen the warmongers forced them to invade other countries.
This lack of culture understanding is creating another crisis today as we are trying to understand Russian, Iranian and Chinese venture motives. Trying to apply solutions that would work on Canada, Germany or Italy, that have very similiar cultures, won't work on Putin, Xi, TBD. Almost no one wants a war but when people like Hitler, Mussolini, Tojo, Putin and Xi are allowed to run freely, they begin think they can take over the world and no one will try to stop them. This was proved time and again when Hitler took over Austria, Checlosolvika, Tojo in Korea and Manchuria, Stalin in Eastern Europe, China and N. Korea, Putin in Georgia and the Crimea. The politicians just try to appease them to not do it again but this only enboldens them to become even more aggressive. The United Nations was initially created to prevent despots from warring against other countries but since its creation, it has been a total failure and needs to be overhauled or replaced.
America did not want to go into WW1, WW2 or Korea but events were forced upon them that allowed no option but to join the war. The Cold War was a win for the politicians. Despite multiple events, the polictians applied the appropriate political pressures and economic sanctions that nullified communists tactics and we kept the Soviets from invading Europe without going to war and eventually created the downfall of the Soviet Communism Empire. Since that time we obviously have forgotton these Cold War lessons as our politicians forget or do not know the art of politics and economics and are to are too quick on the draw to ask "
where are the carriers" . Injecting hundreds of thousands young Americans into places like Iran, Iraq and Afganistan (where only a few specialist are usually needed.) only tends to be a temporary solution and not a long term vivible solution.
My brother, multiple cousins, close friends and I served in Vietnam, my Dad, Uncles, cousins, family friends served in WW2, Korea and Mid-East adventures. My family has a long tradition of serving in the military with some making the ultimate sacrifice and some just suffurering physical and mental scars the rest of their lives. The last thing I or the majority of
Americans want to see is a another war. Nobody wins! Everyone Loses!
The Biden Administration and NATO totally screwed up the West's response to Putin's invasion of Ukraine. They thought they could all sit together around a campfire, make s'mores, sing Kum ba yah and Putin would voluntaryly pull back to Russia, donate his billions to Black Lives Matter and become a transsexual in repentence. Instead of applying the appropriate "cultural" politicial and economic sanctions, including getting the Russian people on our side and sanctioning any nation that supported Russia, this was not done. Drips and draps of sanctions were applied. Like a a frog in a pot set on a fire, Russia will tolerate the heat right up to the point where a world war is started. The question that has not been asked is why Putin is risking everything to take over Ukraine? Yes, its has warm water ports, natural resources, some oil and farming but Russia already has these items. Understanding this need is key to stopping Putin.
In the end, stopping Putin is not negotiable!! We, as a people can't let this go on and start WW3 nor can we let Putin walk in and enslave the Ukraine. WW2 started when Hilter invaded Poland. At the end of WW2 in Europe, Poland went from being under German domination to Soviet domination and victorious Allies let Eastern Europe suffer for 50 years under the Communists. We need to learn that stopping despots immediately is the only way to stop world wars. This does not mean sending in the troops. Almost every country including the US is dependent on other countries for trade, energy, natural resouces, finances, etc. Take away political, economic and trade will almost always turn a populace against their government. What Trump is planning I do not know, but he needs to do it soon as the Ukrainians people are on their last legs. Weening Europe off the Russian energy teat and totally shutting down their foreign income while isolating them politically and economically would be a start. I can think of a few other nasty dirty tricks as well. Getting the Voice of America radio going again into Russian and CIA off their lazy asses start up internal Russian political strife is a must. The Russian people did it before when they took down the Soviet Premier but they need to be reminded so they can do it again.
But in the meantime we need to heed the Latin adage "Si vis pacem, para bellum," i.e. "to prepare for peace, prepare for war"
