Official: Armed sentries to guard Navy support centers

U.S. Fleet Forces Command has authorized arming personnel at off-base Navy Operational Support Centers around the country where reservists gather to drill.

The move to make these outlying military facilities harder targets comes in the wake of the fatal shooting at the NOSC in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where five service members were gunned down July 16, an FFC command spokesman confirmed Friday.

FFC, led by Adm. Phil Davidson, authorized a limited number of trained personnel at the NOSCs to be armed, but a spokesman for Davidson declined to specify who would be armed at entry control points, citing the need to protect specific force protection measures.

The authorization was released in a message the week of July 20.

There are about four dozen off-base NOSCs affected by the order. Fleet Forces is conducting a study of the facilities to determine the appropriate measures to put in place, the spokesman said.

Typical measures include roving security guards and armed ID check points, which can manned by masters-at-arms or privately contracted security. Fleet Forces Command is in charge of force protection measures across the Navy.

A source with knowledge of the directive said the new force protection measures would be staffed by military personnel.

Sources: Navy officer, Marine fought to take out Chattanooga gunman

The directive came just days after the tragic killing of four Marines and a sailor at the NOSC in Chattanooga, Tennessee, at the hands of Mohammod Abdulazeez, an American citizen who grew up in the area. Investigators are searching for a possible connection between Abdulazeez and international terrorist organizations, but so far links are only tenuous.

News of the directive comes as Defense Secretary Ash Carter has signaled his intent to arm more service members stationed stateside.

Carter sent a memo July 30 directing the services to "develop action plans to improve the security and force protection of DoD personnel."
